Psychological assessment is an important part of the counselling process. Quite often psychological assessment is confused with psychological testing, even though they are different. According to Cohen & Swerdlik (2009), psychological testing is: “the process of measuring psychology-related variables by means of devices or procedures designed to obtain a sample of behavior” (p. 14). Cohen & Swerdlik (2009) also define psychological assessment as: “the gathering and integration of psychology-related data for the purpose of making a psychological evaluation that is accomplished through the use of tools such as tests, interviews, case studies, behavioral observation, and specially designed apparatuses and measurement procedures” (p. 14).
The procedure of Psychological assessment encompasses psychological testing. Instead of relying on the results of one particular test, it incorporates data collected from other sources like interviews, present complaints, information from significant others, behavioural observations, and historical data. The psychological testing is mere administration, scoring, and interpretation of a particular test score (usually numeric) that gives us an idea of an attribute or characteristic; whereas psychological assessment is a logical problem-solving process, that can be therapeutic for the client and help them realize their potentials and achieve their goals (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2009; Hood & Johnson, 2007). There are a variety of ways counselors can use assessment in counseling. According to Whiston counselors use (2017) assessments as a tool used to measure people behavior. Assessments can be informal and formal (Laureate, 2013). One significant part of assessments is to evaluate progress between the client and counselor.
The purpose of this paper is to examine various instruments utilized to provide counselors with the most accurate assessment in family, couple and individual counseling. Nonetheless, this paper will also explore the interventions that are most appropriate for this case study. As it will further bring a better sense of awareness to the techniques used in family assessments.

Assessment is about collecting information on a person’s needs and circumstances, and making sense of that information in order to identify needs and decide on what support or treatment to offer (DOH, 2002). There are many tools for assessing mental health needs of patients with depression. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) (Beck et. al, 1961; 1988), Beck Anxiety Inventory (Beck et al, 1993) and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZSDS)(1965) among others. These tools tell me how someone is feeling. This information is important for the CPA.

The practice of researching human behavior, which dates back to most ancient civilizations, has become better understood and more effective over time. This research led to modern psychology and has become increasingly broad since the first notion that one person could observe and measure the reasoning behind another person’s actions. Researchers in the field can study psychology as a whole or one of the various sub-disciplines that psychology breaks down into. These sub-disciplines range from the psychology of learning to fringe theoretical psychology. The men and women who conduct studies in the psychological field, referred to as psychologists, continue research in their sub-disciplines to add to the knowledge of the community. Psychologists focus on the study of the mind while clinicians treat individuals that suffer from psychological disorders. Now that I have covered psychology’s growth, I will move on to the ways that psychology currently impacts the world.

Examiners can use the TONI for various purposes. These purposes include estimating aptitude and general intellectual function. Identifying individuals believed to have intellectual impairments. Through behavioral assessment, “psychologists can count and record the frequency of particular behaviors” (Wood, Wood, & Boyd, 2014, p. 382).
