As a child I have grown up with a history of mental illness in my family. My uncles, grandparents, and even my dad, currently have some sort of disorder. I also have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and it has affected me not only through my social life, but in my own personal health. Mental illness is something very frowned upon in our society, and I am upset since I grew up with it and see the obvious problems with it. There is always much stigma on how mental disease is not a “real” disease in some cultures, and I find this to a be a big injustice. This has fueled my passion in neurological and chemical disorders in people’s brains. Seeing my family and I in this state, I want to dedicate my profession in treating this type of problem through neurology or psychiatry. …show more content…
One thing I find captivating is the idea that I could implement some reason through my psychology class, through some organic chemistry. Therefore, psychiatry is best for me rather than pharmacology or even pharmacy. I love the aspects of helping the patient and making a one-on-one connection with them. I want to work with people that have serious abnormal illnesses such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, and even epileptic seizures. Both the physical and chemical aspects of the brain fascinate me in every way, and I currently am trying to learn much about it during my time in St. Mary’s as an undergraduate. Every little aspect is what motivates me as a pre-med student. Currently I don’t know whether would want to do neurology or psychiatry, but I am still strongly motivated to take the pre-med route. This is what I want the to help me with, when I am choosing what I want to do in the
I firmly believe that I would be a perfect fit for the Psychiatry residency because of my dedication, experience , passion, knowledge and excellent interpersonal skills. My interest in pursuing a doctorate degree in counseling psychology has been influenced by a combination of life experiences and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Though the path which has led me to this destination is complex, the journey has provided me with the clarity and insight necessary to understand human behavior from a holistic perspective. As I approach the completion of my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am faced with the unsettling realization that I have more questions than I do answers. This has fueled my innate desire and motivation to continue challenging myself by attaining a doctorate degree from the University of North Texas.
Following the decision to further pursue my professional and scholarly vision, I started researching programs that would be a good match given my strong belief that healing happens only in the context of relationship. As a graduate of Eastern University, this doctoral program was at the top of my list from the beginning given the rigorous training I received in my master’s program. Although I have been researching other institutions, I continued to return to Eastern’s website because I find this institution unique in addressing the issues that are close to my heart. The attention Eastern gives to issues of faith makes the program incredibly appealing.
As a teenager, my aunt once lived with us and I remember my dad said vividly “Aunty X is ill and will be with us for a little while, let’s provide her with all the necessary support she needs”, however; my dad never disclosed the type of ailment she was suffering from. I was home alone with my dad as my other siblings were already studying in the university. During the period of providing care, I observed some strange and unexplainable behaviour in her. For example, she left the stove on with nothing on it, she was observed to have poor concentration, and poor hygiene, talks to self and very suspicious of others.
A mental health counselor develops a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families and groups to accomplish mental health and career goals. Helping others to accomplish their goals and listening to various stories of hardship have always played a part in my life. Stories of others have helped me get through rough times, and so did my own personal stories do the same for others. My story may help save a life tomorrow. It is a rewarding career path that one may enjoy which requires excellent communication skills and a commit between each other.
I realized that mental health disorders are universal and rampant. It affects overall health of the patient and their families. I believe improving mental health improves health care of the society. There is no better field that psychiatry to improve mental health. I am also drawn to other uniqueness of psychiatry wherein a patient is evaluated mainly on his/her interaction with the physician with minimal assistance from radiology or labs investigation. So a lot depends upon the knowledge and skill of the physician in coming to logical conclusions while diagnosing the patient. I love the
During my second year of medical school, while on my clinical psychiatry rotation, at Duke University, I was asked to interview a depressed women with terminal malignant melanoma. I can still recall this experience, as if it happened yesterday, instead of almost 35 years ago.
In the past, mental illness was taboo to discuss and there was fear surrounding the topic. However, remarkable strides have been made in figuring out the causes of the disease and weighing the most effective treatments specialized for each specific disease. According to the American Psychotic Association, “A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.”

One of the toughest decisions any person will ever make is the choice of whether to go to college or not. After that comes one of the toughest questions of one’s college experience: What will I major in? With so many different colleges and universities that offers so many different programs and majors, it can often be overwhelming. This would often be found to be true for most people… but not for someone like me. Ever since I was in the 8th grade, I had already decided what I wanted to do with my life, and now I've made it my lifelong academic goal to become a game changing, world-renowned epileptologist. Many who know the field well would probably be asking themselves why someone as young as me would decide to dedicate their life to a field as little known and often difficult as neurology and neuroscience. Well, if I’m being completely honest with you, I myself have a neurological problem, known to the medical community as epilepsy, which causes
Mental health has been an important issue to me for the majority of my life. My mother owns and operates a vocational center for individuals with mental disabilities, and through her program I was able to discover my passion for helping those who can not always help themselves. While I am spending time with the individuals at the program, I become inspired by the kindness, compassion, and strength that radiates from within them. Living with a mental illness can be very challenging and comes with many difficulties, and to alleviate some of their struggle by simply listening and caring brings me immense joy.
December 19th, 2010. This was the day everything I knew vanished. The flames that engulfed my home that bitter morning took more than just my possessions, it took my childhood. At ten years old, you would like to believe that nothing bad can happen to you. Life is great, you’re young and free and suddenly your world stops turning. Everything you knew to be ‘your life’ is burning to the ground and there is nothing you can do except watch. The events we experience in our life time make us stronger, and much like the phoenix, we rise from the ashes of our traumas.

In this class I learned about a lot more of the background and complications in regard to psychiatry than I had known in the past. I already knew quite a bit about psychiatry from my psychology class a couple of semesters ago and I have always had an interest in psychology in the past and had done a lot of research about it, but had never really paid much attention to the history of it before. While I of course knew that it had a history, but had just never paid attention to it, I had never considered the philosophy of it. I had never even considered that there may be different viewpoints or that there may be differing ethical/moral concerns. It turns out that most of psychiatry is extremely controversial and very few agree on each individual viewpoint and no
