Introduction Psychiatry is a very specific and highly specialized occupation in the medical and psychological realm. Psychiatrists are both a doctor and a psychologist; psychiatrists have to go through medical school and, therefore, administer medication to the mentally ill, but they also counsel them. Thus, they are an interesting discourse community to look at and they have a very distinct discourse. In the discourse community of Psychiatrists, there are many forms of the genre such as journals, websites, and associations that are found to keep communication between them. Genre is defined by Amy Devitt as flexible responses to fit the needs of a discourse community or a social setting. A discourse community is a group that has goals or purposes and uses communication to achieve these goals (Swales). I will take a closer look and analyze the ways in which Psychiatrists communicate through different genres in their discourse community.
Background to the Study
The psychiatrist community is one that is in high demand since it is such a specialized vocation. This makes Psychiatry a

Each journal is published by the APA, but each journal has a separate goal that its authors wish to communicate. The first is called The American Journal of Psychiatric Services (AJP). This journal’s purpose is to communicate to its’ readers new innovative research and treatments regarding the medical side of psychiatry. There are editorials, clinical studies, articles, and many more different types of discourse located within this journal. The APA says, “No other psychiatric journal reaches more psychiatrists with greater impact or immediacy than The American Journal of Psychiatry, the journal that the overwhelming majority of psychiatrists consider essential.” This is obviously a necessity for psychiatrists to read. This is the way that psychiatrist communicates among them the most cutting edge
A physician has an unenviable position; he is closest to man approaching a god-like stature. And despite the demise of 'doctor knows best', we still need to trust his diagnosis-something that is increasingly difficult in a world where information is widely available, and Google substitutes for a doctor. In the case of psychiatry the issue of trust is amplified since diagnosis is based on a patient's expressed thoughts and overt behaviours rather than solely on biological phenomena. And these thoughts and behaviours are influenced by the patient's environment-a mix of his social, cultural and technological experiences.
The fourth characteristic states, “A discourse community utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims.” (221). Swales defines genre as different types of communication, not just verbal, but also written. Genres of a discourse community could be group messages, online posts, emails, notes, and more. Each discourse community is going to have different, specific genres they
This paper will discuss four potential persons I might become. I see myself most strongly becoming a Peer Specialist. The role of a Peer Specialist is very important in helping people suffering from mental illnesses to accept, educate, cope and advocate for themselves to bring down the barriers that have been a stereotypical thorn in their sides’ mainly through a social disease called discrimination. This discrimination is basically society’s lack of understanding the world of the mentally disturbed.
A basketball team is a great example of a discourse community. In a discourse community you have a few characteristics such as the goals, lexis and genre of the team. Goals are the team’s main focus/points that they want to achieve. Genre is basically how the members of the team stay connected and in contact with each other. Lexis can be described as the language and terminology used between the team members.
I firmly believe that I would be a perfect fit for the Psychiatry residency because of my dedication, experience , passion, knowledge and excellent interpersonal skills. Your residency offers many experiences, which I am looking for in a program including a variety of rotation opportunities, teaching and research experience, and a challenging environment where I can advance my skills as a Psychiatrist. There were several new concepts that were introduced to me this semester including the topic of genre. I found out that it was more than a classificatory tool. According to Bawarshi and Reiff, genre has changed into “a shaper of texts, meanings, and social actions”. In other words, genres are used to change and influence social interactions and to produce meaning-
Psychiatrists are physicians who help patients with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of any mental disorder. Psychiatrists can treat patients with a range of disorders from mild anxiety, to people with severe disorders that can cause dangerous behavior to anyone with a mental retardation, to anyone also suffering with alcoholism. Psychiatrists can also prescribe drugs to their patients because they are physicians. They undergo many years of training to be able to recognize the connection between mental disorders and physical disorders. Psychiatrists can work with their patients in their own private offices or in hospitals and clinics. Psychiatrists can also teach in medical school or research and study the causes and treatments ...

In ancient times, a superstition was once believed by humans that erratic behavior was the possession of spiritually evil demons, that only wizardry or sorcery could mend and cure the mentally ill. In 1808, a man named Professor Johann Christian Reil developed a new medicine field called Psychiatry, meaning the soul or mind. Eventually, the physicians practicing this medical field were known as Psychiatrist (“History of Psychiatry”). As time passed, the field started to evolve and the knowledge expanded becoming one of the oldest medical fields still existing today (“Psychiatrist – DO/MD”). Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are experts at preventing and treating psychological illnesses such as mental disorders. A Psychiatrist is a significant aspect to the medical field because they gain insight into the human mind, specialize in varieties of mental disorders, and help humans overcome internal problems.
