Some hide their culture and identity from others in order to preserve others and to fit in with others. Suppressing their identity and a shell of who they truly are. Well, no one knows this topic more than immigrants and how they have to adapt to other cultures. People have to go through hardship in their lives. People that must go through this more than others are immigrants. They have to adjust to new cultures while keeping their own identity, and Antonia Shimirida is a clear representation of this. Will Cather writes this in My ntonia “‘If I live here, like you, that is different. Things will be easy for you. But they will be hard for us.”’(Cather 99; Bk. 1.19) - a. Antonia says that life will be hard for “us”, which can refer to many things, but in this context it refers to the immigrants and compares them to the emigrant, Jim. People try to put on a facade in order to make themselves look better and appease others, but putting on the mask suppresses who people truly are. They aren’t truly themselves when they put on the mask, their culture and identity is suppressed because they want to fit in with others instead of being bold and showing their true selves.
