It is known for Psychology that is the knowledge of the mental characteristics or behavior of the human being. Therefore, it is so important to study the human brain and behavior so the mental health issues of the human can be understand and solve. Beside it helps in understanding why the human act and think the way he/she do, it also helps in improving the personality. Of the most important topics of Psychology are consciousness, personality, and the self.
According to Freud there are three kinds of conscious in our minds, the conscious, the preconscious, and the unconscious mind. All three parts of mind together look like an iceberg. The conscious one is located on the top, and this one is responsible on the human mind short term memory. The preconscious one, which is beneath the conscious, is considered the long term memory that we can access any time we’ve been asked to remember something. Last and the most significant is the unconscious one and this one we cannot access it is so deep in our minds but this part has thoughts, feeling and memories from our childhoods and reflects our actions today. Sigmund Freud’s theories on the construction of the mind are simple, but fundamentally changed the field of psychology. He proposed, among other things, that the human mind is composed of three parts: the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. The preconscious consists of information, such as a telephone number, that is “accessible to consciousness without emotional resistance” (Schellenberg 21). In Freud’s estimation, the unconscious is the most important area of the mind. The information stored within it has “very strong resistances” to becoming conscious (Freud 32). Residing in the unconscious is the id, which “contains everything…that is present at birth… – above all, therefore, the instincts which originate from somatic organization” (14). Essay 3 (Reflective) We have studied in the course, the diversity of distinct theoretical orientations in counselling and psychotherapy. Each theory has distinct philosophies accrued over a long period of time to augment a successful therapeutic outcome with the most significant being psychodynamic, cognitive- behavioural and humanistic. However, I am personally inclined towards the behavioural-cognitive theory. Behavioural theory founded by Pavlov and Watson emphasise that all behaviours are learned through conditioning, and cognitive theory pioneered by Ellis and Beck highlights cognitions that impact feelings and behaviour.
I never noticed how much psychology could be incorporated into everyday life. But really, any decision or action you take is related to it. I have personally been extremely interested in social psychology: why people do things because of social norms, what people do in order to look socially acceptable, etc. Others topics I also find interesting are sensation and perception; how past experiences can influence how you perceive the things around you, states of consciousness; how things that have happened in your day can be transferred into a mash of events in your dreams, motivation and emotion; what makes a person do something or what makes a person start or stop procrastination, and lastly: personality; what characteristics and traits stand out the most in a person, what makes a person who they are.

In terms of the unconscious and conscious, Freud situates these conceptions in a topographic model of the mind. He divided it into two systems called the unconscious and the preconscious. Their knowledge in the unconscious system is repressed and unavailable to consciousness without overcoming resistances (e.g., defense mechanisms). Thereby, the repression does not allow unconscious knowledge to be completely aware; rather, it is construed by means of concealing and compromise, but only interpretable through its derivatives dream and parapraxes that overcome resistance by means of disguise and compromise. Within the preconscious system, the contents could be accessible, although only a small portion at any given moment. Unconscious thought is characterized by primary process thinking that lacks negation or logical connections and favors the over-inclusions and 'just-as' relationships evident in condensed dream images and displacements. Freud asserted that primary process of thinking was phylogenetically, and continues to be ontogenetically, prior to secondary process or logical thought, acquired later in childhood and familiar to us in our waking life (1900, 1915a).
Personality involves a blend of characteristics that make one unique. In reviewing personality, we consider the influence of the interactions that one is engaged in, the nature or the environment of one's upbringing and genetics. It involves understanding individuals’ traits such as withdrawal and willpower and how various parts of an individual link together to form personality. Personality expresses itself from within an individual and is comparatively regular throughout in an individual’s life. Different people have different personalities dependent on factors such as environment and genetic composition. Our personality is dependent on the success or failure of our development in the eight stages of life. This is proposed by Erik Erikson. Success in the development stages lead to virtues while the failure leads to malignancies.
