We need not to excuse David's sin, because he confessed it and expressed his renewed trust in God. When we read Psalm 34, we are to understand that it was written by the same man who had already acknowledge his sin and is forgiven. The trust which David speaks in Psalm 34 is that which he reaffirmed in Psalm 56. The key to understanding of the relationship of Psalm 34 to 1 Samuel 21 states that David was forgiven and renewed as a result of his experience described in Psalm 56. David begins this psalm with a vow, or a promise: “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (v.1). Here David promise to persistently praise His God. understood that David is not promising a marathon praise session, but rather is committing himself to the praise of God at every opportunity, and in the mist of various states of mind, spirit, and body. Just as we are to “pray without ceasing” (Thess 5:17) to pray constantly and in all circumstances. David promise to praise without ceasing. While verses one stresses the frequency of David’s praise, the second verse reveals the focus of that praise.
David said his soul will “make a boast in the Lord” (v:2). David does not dwell on his experience, nor even on his deliverance, but on his Deliverer. The Lord is both the subject and the object of David's praise. Psalm reminds me of the fellowship of praise, for the most part praise can be private, However, that is not the kind of praise which psalms practice and promote. When David publicly praise God at worship, he did so purposing to promote worship on the part of the entire congregation., for the most part, those who loved God, as David did, have the right to rejoice and praise God with him. In Romans 12:15, Paul's teaching indicates that the new testament worship should be a sharing in the joys of the fellow- Christians: “rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. David therefore urges his fellow-worshipers to join with him in magnifying the Lord so that His name will be corporately exalted (v:3). David came to believe that there was no god because "No just God would leave me like this" Pg.131. He had totally disconnected himself from all physical pain. He refused to shed a tear because he didn’t want to show his mother the satisfaction of his defeat. He no longer dreamed at night, nor did he have an imagination. He felt as if his life had no point "I no longer awoke in the mornings refreshed; I was tired and told myself that I had one less day to live in this world" Pg.
The theological themes that stood out in this narrative are God’s willingness to forgive after David’s repentance, and his need for punishment. If David had not repented, God would have no reason to forgive him, but he did repent, and God forgave him. If God had not forgiven David for his wrongdoings, David would have strayed from him. At the same time, if God had not punished David, David would have taken everything into his own hands and taken God for granted. The cycle of punishment, repentance and forgiveness is something seen very often in this section of the Bible, as well as in other parts. Without that cycle, God would not be same God we know today.
The book, Interpreting the New Testament, written by Daniel Harrington, is an introduction to the various types of literary and textual criticism that form the basis of good hermeneutics. The stories were created with visions for the future, in order to allow audiences insight into communities and beliefs that were common thought during their era. The stories responded to the issues and problems of their time, but also addressed contemporary climates. While the stories themselves may not be true, they convey truth without needing literal readings. For example, the creation stories in Genesis, portray God as creating the universe, and while this is considered as not ‘literally true’; the stories communicate theological truths about mankind’s relationship with God through the eyes of Hebrew writers .
The title describes on the day when the Lord delivered David from his enemies and from Saul. The heading, which is the theme, identifies the setting in Samuel. Since the book of Samuel records many accounts when David was protected and saved by God from his enemies, it can be inferred that Psalm 18 is connected based on the common theme and not by the actual event. The use of imagery and metaphor in this psalm makes it difficult for the readers and scholars to conclude that the psalm is directly from the context of the events in 1 Samuel 24 and 27. The commonality between these two passages are that David called for help and God rescues him. He describes Yahweh as his refuge, shield, and deliverer (Psalms 18:2). This is observed in 1 Samuel, when God protected David from being killed by Saul. Though Saul may have tracked David and attempted to kill David several times, God protected him. This event, however, is not explicitly stated in the Psalms. Psalm 18 only portrays God’s sovereignty and love for his people. Psalm 18:31-45 resembles the battle David had with the nations in Philistines, and his victory that is described in 1 Samuel 27. Despite the common elements, Psalm 18 ends its poem by stating David and his descendants. If it was taken directly from 1 Samuel 24 and 27, a note about David’s offspring would not be stated.
