The protest poster ‘moms takes action against gun violence’ is protesting the fact that guns are allowed however kinder surprise eggs aren’t. The protest is put together by a group called moms take action. This group is simply saying that kinder surprises that kill 3 people globally each year are banned due to this in the interest of child safety, however guns that kill over 1500 kids each year are still fully legal. This applies to logos as it tries to discredit the logic behind there system. This is a very clever protest poster and includes several clever elements, the first main element is the portrayal of colour. The only lighter objects in the picture is the kinder surprise egg and the shirt of the kids. This symbolically demonstrates
the bright future they have but the dark system they live in. The background is a school, they are showing this because the sickening degree and frequency of school shootings. The message becomes even more apparent now because of the recent school shooting. Logos means the persuading by the use of reasoning. For example, “ No one even knows whether salmon can even survive in the lower San Joaquin, which has temperatures more suitable for bass and bluegill, (McEwen 1).” The quote is clearly a display of logos because the author demonstrates to the reader that the government does not even make sure the salmon can survive in the lower San Joaquin, which then convinces the reader the project is not well thought out and cannot be trusted. I agree with the author’s viewpoint because if the government was really interested in the benefits for people, the representatives would have looked into all the details necessary to be able to succeed with the project. Another example of the author stating logos on his article for the reader to get a better understanding of what the government really cares for is, “Besides, scientific evidence suggests that California’s salmon problems have been caused in large part by oceanic conditions and the environmental mess that is the San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta (McEwen 1).” This quote is an alternative representation of logos since it proves a fact. The fact makes the reader extra believable since he uses scientific evidence about California’s salmon problems. The way the photo was taken only showing the people being abused adds hardship. It does not show the policemen who are spraying the hoses, which makes them seem even more evil and more like the bad guys. On December 14, 2012 Adam Lanza, a 20 year old with asperger’s syndrome, shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut . According to the final report by the states attorney’s office he got in the school at 9:30 AM in the morning and shot the principal and the school’s psychologist that went out to the hallway to check loud bangs they heard. He then moved on to class rooms where innocent children were learning and started shooting and by 9:40 AM, just ten minutes later, he took the lives of twenty six people, including twenty children age twelve and below and six adults, before taking his own life (State Report on Sandy Hook Elementary shooting).
There seems to be the overarching idea of whether an artist should focus on creating their own work, or if they should use their work to aid their surrounding community in some way. At times, using art for social activism can cause controversy. It may be that the artist could never depict perfect activism in their art, and that it may never please every viewer. However, it may not be that all art as activism should be avoided. If there were none of these works, critical conversations may have never begun. In fact, it might be good that this style of art does not please everyone.
