Imagine the world where all the ice of the poles has melted away. Much of northern Europe is a part of the Atlantic Ocean. Florida is completely submerged underwater. Memphis Tennessee is now a coastal city along the Gulf Coast. It was different once. Cities like Miami and London use to be popular tourist destinations in the early 21st Century. All of the low lying cities like Miami, New Orleans, London, and Paris are under hundreds of feet of water. The ice locked in the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica has melted away, dumping most of our freshwater into the seas. Much of our freshwater supply and farmland is not contaminated or swallowed by the rising oceans since the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets melted. How could we as people prevent this massive disaster that the world has never been experienced before?
As modern humans, we have been innovators. We have solved many problems that many would have thought to be impossible such as going to the moon for instance. We have been posed with many problems and have come up with many solutions. Unfortunately many of the problems we faced were something such as “in the heat of the moment” situations. Unfortunately sea level rise is a slow process, so many people would not see this as a problem until we have shot ourselves in the foot. With rapid globalization taking hold in developing nations, more and more carbon dioxide is being released into the atmosphere. We as a planet must prepare for the worst because sea levels will creep higher into our cities. Even though we may be able to slow the rise of the oceans with carbon emissions, it still will not be enough to save our cities. Our homes and history will have been lost to the sea if we do not act soon to protect our c...

...nt to us, our history. Many of our cities, especially those along the Mediterranean Sea, are vulnerable to sea level rise.

Will this century mark the decline of society? Is the future safe from the mistakes of mankind? In “Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene”, Roy Scranton suggests that the question we should be asking ourselves about global warming is not whether it exists or how it can be stopped, but rather how are we going to deal with it. The purpose of the article is to convince everyone that current life is unsustainable, and that nothing can be done to reverse the process; we must acknowledge that the future will be drastically different and plan in advance if civilization is to keep moving forward. Dr. Scranton develops a realistic tone that relies on logos, pathos, and ethos appeals to persuade readers of his claim. Scranton sufficiently backs up

The effect of sea level rising is especially challenging for the population that lives in low-lying coastal communities, such as Miami Beach. The city is surrounded by sea. Miami Beach is linked to the mainland city of Miami through causeways, and it is an area that allocates much of the wealth from its art decoration and former celebrity playground standing. For them, funding does not seem to be a problem. However, the threat they are facing, cannot be entirely solved by money. Its sea level rising is at 9 millimeters a year, while there is only 3 millimeters on global average acceleration. If the sea level rises for 6 feet by 2100, Miami Beach city will get swallowed. When referring about sea level rising phenomenon, Miami Beach always acts as a ground zero example. Government leaders around the world are waiting to see how this rich living laboratory experiment place can avoid drowning. Below is a figure showing the sea level rising between 1900 and 2020 in Miami and Miami Beach

One of the major effects of global warming is the rise of sea level due to thermal expansion of the ocean, in addition to the melting of land ice. Now there are dozens of land areas that sit well below sea level and the majority of those land areas are very well populated. At least 40 percent of the world 's population lives within 62 miles of the ocean, putting millions of lives and billions of dollars ' worth of property and infrastructure at risk. (Juliet Christian-Smith, 2011) This means if the sea level rises to the projected level of 25 meters (82 feet) half of the world will retreat back to the ocean. (Rohrer, 2007) Also rising sea levels means higher tides and storm surges riding on ever-higher seas which are more dangerous to people and coastal inf...
The first problem is sea level rise. Sea level rise is due to more and more greenhouse gas emissions and melting glaciers, and the affect is coastal erosion and land area loss. The World Bank (2012, p.8) states that about 70 per cent of the biggest European cities are in danger from rising sea levels, and the sea level of these cities is less than 10 meters. Especially in the developing and developed coastal areas, for instance, Kolkata, Shanghai, Tokyo and New York city. The second problem is extreme events. Climate change include floods, storms, heat-waves and intense precipitation, these effects will cause terrible harm to the economic development of the coastal cities. The total damage cost of Hurricane Katrina was $130 billion, accounted for 25 per cent with the event of full macro economic costs. Extremes events in the developing countries have an undeniable influence on the economic growth (Hallegatte, 2006 and Hallegatte et al, 2007, p.33). The third problem is energy use. Climate change is closely related with energy use, depending on the different temperature and areas people could reduce the demand for heating or rise demand for cooling (EEA 2008). In addition, climate change may cause the different energy and produce more greenhouse gas emissions. These three problems will continue to exacerbate the climate change and influence the development of the
