With the help of the Internet, our personal information is everywhere. Our banking and financial information is online, along with our medical records and social media profiles. Privacy is becoming a bigger issue now that we share our personal information for more things, more frequently. Matthew Danda’s “Protect Yourself Online” is a great place to start learning how to be a more knowledgeable user of the Internet and how to be more aware of our personal information. The book is structured into four parts: Part 1 discusses the fundamentals of Internet security and privacy, Part 2 specializes in privacy while on the World Wide Web, Part 3’s topics are e-mail security and privacy, and Part 4 discusses the ways in which to secure a computer. Following the structure of the book, I will review and summarize the most important aspects of the parts and chapters in chronological order. Part 1 features chapters one through five. Chapter 1 is titled “Beginning Your Online Journey” and Danda introduces the reader to the idea that there are threats on the Internet that could happen to them. He explains that threats can be against a person’s computer, property, or personal safety. He also points out the fact that some threats can go undetected. Danda uses this opening chapter to shed light on ideas that readers may not have considered. In Chapter 2, Danda describes the basics of the Internet. He states that security threats are a result of the design of the Internet. The Internet was used exclusively by the military until 1995, when it was made public (Danda 23). Privacy is becoming rare as our society continues to become more industrialized and move towards a society hyper-focused on technology. Nicholas Carr explains this obsession with technology in his essay “Tracking Is an Assault on Liberty.” He identifies three dangers that are present in today’s internet society that are: personal data can fall into the wrong hands easily, personal information may be used to influence our behavior, and personal privacy is eroding and may lead us as a society to devalue the concept of privacy. Privacy is dead and corporations, governments, and third parties murdered it for their personal gain not for the interest of the public as they claim. There are more disadvantages than advantages on letting corporations, governments, and third parties track and acquire data to personalized services and advertisements for us.
