In OUT OF MY MIND by Sharon Draper, and SHORT by holly Goldberg Sloan, the protagonist the protagonists are faced with many challenges. In OUT OF MY MIND, Melody has Cerebral Palsy other known as, Cp. Cp is a medical illness that affects body movement and muscle coordination. Melody has reached the top,her and her team won the wiz kids quiz team competition, even with Cp. Melody is feeling over ecstatic because her and her team are going to nationals in Washington DC, and she is going to compete. When it is time to leave her team leaves without her. SHORT takes place during the summer of fith grade (5), and the wizard of
Lavoie’s workshop provokes an emotional response. After viewing life through the eyes of a child with special needs, I cannot help but have a more significant understanding of what people, especially children with disabilities, must deal with every day, everywhere. During the many years that I have worked with children with various disabilities, I have encountered each of the topics discussed in Lavoie’s workshop and agree with the points he makes regarding children with disabilities. Particularly impacting the way I interact with my students are the topics concerning: anxiety, reading comprehension, and fairness.
Warriors don’t cry is a story of the Little Rock Nine who went to Central High School; an all-white school with hopes to integrate blacks and whites into non segregated schools. The story mainly follows a girl named Melba and what her life was like at the time of going to this school and making a stepping stone into desegregation. However this took place in a time and place where white people were still being very racist towards black people. Some say sending a girl into a school like this is child abuse because these kids suffered death threats, being physically abused, and slandered against. There is also the people that believe this was the right thing to do even if a child like Melba’s life was at risk. It was not child abuse to send Melba
Why are people not judged by who they are but instead what they look like? People judge people without find out who they are, what are their values, or their upbringing. Instead, they are categorized as a particular type of people based on how they appear. In Malcolm Gladwell’s essay,”Trouble Makers” he tells of how wrongful generalizations are made on a group of people or things. While in Brent Staples essay,”Just Walk on By” he tells of his personal struggled being racially profiled as an African American man. Gladwell would respond to Staples argument that he is perceived unfairly due to the generalizations that are made towards Staples.
Discrimination was one of the issues that caused conflict in the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. One example of discrimination in the novel comes in the form of racial discrimination against Crooks, as he is an African American. Another example of discrimination is gender discrimination against Curley’s wife. Finally, there is discrimination against mentally disabled people, which is evident in Lennie’s character. The ranch hands' actions and conversations demonstrated the racial discrimination against Crooks for his skin colour, gender discrimination against Curley’s wife for her gender, and prejudice against Lennie, who was mentally disabled individual. This prevented the characters from reaching their full potential and causes tragedy.
How would you like it if someone walked up to you and berated you based on the color of your skin? A characteristic like that isn’t even something you can control, so an insult of that nature can leave one furious and oppressed. Discrimination is inevitable in any culture, throughout history, in modern times, and even in ancient times. For example, the oppression and murder of 6 million Jewish people during the Holocaust, the African Slave Trade which occurred for multiple centuries, and more recently, the “ethnic cleansing” of Rohingya people in Myanmar, brought on by the government of the Asian nation, all of which are tragedies doomed to happen when history repeats itself and people do not learn
Over the past decades the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been taught to American students anywhere from seventh grade to twelfth, credited as a story with themes such as coming of age, discrimination and justice, all of which might appeal to young adults. However, the teachings of the Lee’s recently second published book, Go Set A Watchman seem to be daunting many within the English profession. Some reasons why there is hesitation to incorporate the new novel into curriculum is because it contains incest, racism, and the reconstruction of the heroic Atticus Finch. In order to prevent misinterpretations of characters like those of Jean Louise and Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird should not be taught unless it is alongside with Go Set a Watchman.
Discrimination is described as the unjust treatment of others, especially due to race, sex, or age. In the narratives “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” by Zora Neale Hurston and “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anzaldua, both writers use their works to shine a light on discrimination in the United States, though in different ways. Anzaldua’s focus relies mostly on the pride of her fellow Chicanos, whereas, Hurston has more of an individualistic, soulful message. Anzaldua grew up along the Mexican-American border where she struggled with her identity as she was torn between the standards of both Mexican and American societies. Shelby Steele made a very good analysis on the way the society thinks and acts now that black and white people seems to have broken the barrier of discrimination and racism. He described affirmative action as the way black people take advantage of the historical discrimination against them to get special benefits and opportunities. Steele strongly disagrees with that practice, he believes it affects the society and it creates a feeling of fear and uncertainty for white people. I completely agree with his point of view, buy giving black people those kind of preferences we are being racist with white people, but unfortunately in this country that concept is overrated and it only applies for black people. Comparing the 1960’s to the world we live in today, people who are “different” in society are treated poorly. There are many ways over the years people who are divergent have been acted towards. From wide ranging of racial, religious, and sexual to minimizing as simply wearing the same clothes for 2 days. The book The Curious Case of Benjamin Button takes place in a summer of 1960 Baltimore. Roger Button and his wife were a very rich couple who owned a Hardware Company. Henceforth, having a 70-year old baby was not a word you wanted out. People who are wealthy and well-known always have a reputation to uphold. In this 1960’s scenario it would be “Whose son went to the best university” or “Whose son scored more points in the football game”.
In Khaled Hosseini’s Kite Runner, Amir, the son of a successful businessman in Afghanistan, is faced with the injustices of society and how easy it is to conform to those injustices. Amir has a friend named Hassan who is a Hazara, a minority in Afghanistan and because of Hassan’s ethnicity, Amir is judged and insulted for being friends with a Hazara. As events unfold Amir begins to see Hassan as a Hazara, instead of his friend, and eventually this leads to Amir not defending Hassan. Hassan is attacked by locals, while Amir watched behind a mud wall. Eventually Hassan leaves with a fellow servant Ali, because Amir incriminated Hassan. Discriminating is one of the most gruesome acts one can perform. Elie Wiesel agrees with this as he once said “Indifference, to me, is the epitome of evil” (Brainy Quotes). Wiesel being a survivor of arguably the worst genocide in history, knows first hand what its like to be discriminated against, and so do the victims of the Armenian genocide. The Armenian genocide brought pain and suffering to a group of people for the same reason it did to Elie Wiesel and the Jews; Discrimination.
There are three main types of discrimination that take place in To Kill a Mockingbird. They are discrimination of race, class, and gender. Discrimination of race, or racism, is the most obvious and the most common form of discrimination that occurs in the novel. The best example of racism in To Kill a Mockingbird occurs when Tom Robinson is found guilty, simply because he is black. Discrimination of class also occurs in the novel. The best example of this is when Scout goes to school and puts everyone into their own social class. An example of this is on the first day of school when Scout tells Ms. Caroline, “Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham”. Miss Caroline doesn’t understand because she isn’t from around there, but it makes sense to Scout
Muhammad Ali proclaims, “Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn’t matter which color does the hating.” He is explaining to not discriminate others no matter what race. Although, in To Kill a Mockingbird there’s prejudice because of people's races. In Maycomb County, most white and black people dislike to be associated with other races which shows hate against the color of people’s skin. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird shows racism and discrimination are present.
Many racial and ethnic groups are treated cruel, which contributes to the problem of discrimination. The inhumane treatment inflicted onto different racial and ethnic groups is provoking horrific violence around the world. The film The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, gives us an insight to the cruel treatment endured by Jewish people in World War II. Jewish people were taken from their homes, separated from their families, and placed in concentration camps where they were expected to die. They were exposed to extreme levels of abuse, such as starvation, physical beatings, and emotional torture. The fear and terrorizing the soldiers used on the Jews is shown in the scene when Lieutenant Kotler catches Shmuel eating a cookie: “Are you eating? Have you been stealing food?

Kate Chopin reacts to this certain idea that relationships in a marriage during the late 1800’s were a prison for women. Through the main protagonist of her story, Mrs. Mallard, the audience clearly exemplifies with what feelings she had during the process of her husbands assumed death. Chopin demonstrates in “The Story of an Hour” the oppression that women faced in marriage through the understandings of: forbidden joy of independence, the inherent burdens of marriage between men and women and how these two points help the audience to further understand the norms of this time.
