“One day recently, Cynthia Newton’s 12-year-old daughter asked her for help with homework, but Newton didn’t want to help her, because she was too busy on Facebook. So her daughter went upstairs to her room and sent an e-mail asking her for help, but Newton didn’t see the e-mail, because, well, she was too busy on Facebook.” This unusual action, by a is from one of typical moms in this nation is excerpted from an article titled, “Five Clues…Facebook” from CNN. As the social networks system have s become rooted into our society, people have become way different from the past. As soon as Facebook came out in the world,When Facebook appeared, people were fascinated by it, and it grew as theinto the most massive, powerful social network that connects the wholein the world. Since the birth of Facebook, a majority of people became so addictive to it [D1] as Newton acted; so, what draws people into Facebook? What makes them click on the “News feed” button in every five minutes? I would like to ask a broader question: Why are people fascinated by and dependent on social media, and what is its role and impact on us? 1,924,913,929 is the number of views on Youtube for the music video “Gangnam Style” by Psy, whose song was spread worldwide in just a few clicks. When I saw this unrealistic [D2] number of views, I was not astonished by Psy’ popularity but by the powerulness of social media to that can connect two billion people to into one music video. The primary reason that Psy he could earn the title of “The most viewed Youtube video in the history”, and he could become a global star within just a couple of months is the social media, Youtube[D3] . As Psy’s phenomenon demonstrates, social media has been fundamental in our lives and be... ... middle of paper ... ...ose pictures of menus that other people posted before. I am never afraid of entering a new restaurant door anymore. In fact, now it is impossible for us to be separate from the social media since it plays a necessary role in our generation. We have to remind that it is not the fault of social media that sometimes it can be abused, but it is ours. We should not make a generation where a mom is too busy with chatting with friends on Facebook and cannot help her daughter with her homework, or one is spending all day stalking on his ex- girlfriend. [D23] That is too miserable. And yet, we should not just throw the social media away from here because Facebook and Youtube give us so much joyful moments of others and mine. We always should be conscious and cautious about how we use the social media and balance it well. That is all. Now, let me refresh my homepage. [D24]
In the summer of 2012, the full music video of “Gangnam Style” was uploaded onto YouTube and was immediately a sensation, receiving over 500,000 hits on its first day and racking up millions of more hits in a matter of a week. By the end of the year 2012, the song had topped the music charts of more than thirty countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Being the first ever YouTube video to reach the milestone of one billion hits, the song took the social media by storm. These staggering statistics indicate how “Gangnam Style” was able to achieve a tipping point, thus igniting an epidemic. What made it go viral? The two main reasons responsible for the cause are the Power of Context and the Stickiness Factor.
Over the past few years something has taken a toll in most people’s lives, we use it, love it, talk about it, and check it almost every hour of every day: this thing is called social networks. It was only a few years back, in 2003, when MySpace was discovered, and in 2004 when Mark Zuckerberg established Facebook, and soon after in 2006 Twitter followed. These sites became more than just an online destination, but a way of life. Notifications, follower counts, friend requests, photo comments- all what might seem like silly things that teenagers and adults alike await the moment they come home to check. We scroll unconsciously through feeds and pictures of people we barely know, from the inquisitive human nature. At school everyone is talking: “You won’t believe what I just saw on Facebook!” or when a major political occurrence occurs, most people admit “Oh yeah I saw that on Twitter.” It is inevitable that social networking sites have taken a major toll in our lives. The question is whether it is for the better or worse. Although many can hold a cogent argument that social networking sites have connected them with friends and family, these sites have led to decreased grades, lowered self esteem/depression, and lost jobs due to the blank addiction. Therefore, social networking sites are bad for our society.
Today’s generation does not understand how Facebook makes our society more interconnected. With the growing number of people joining social networks like Facebook, communication with others is easier than ever. Juliane Elliot argues in her writing, “How the Internet Has Changed the World,” that Facebook has dramatically changed our everyday lives in several ways. For example, it allows people to build stronger relationships with friends and family by providing a method of easy and quick communication. Furthermore, businesses have increased advertising through websites like Facebook because of the large number of people that are exposed to ads and also since posting an advertisement is effortless. Lastly, political life has greatly improved since politicians can now reach out to their voters with the click of a button. Opposing these arguments, however, are other authors that write about how Facebook has led to a loss of personal communication and productivity, and can spread falsified evidence. Although the validity of Facebook as having a positive impact on society is at question among groups opposing social networking, Juliane Elliot is most persuasive in her argument because of her use of logical reasoning, emotions, and practical application in everyday life.
In our day to day lives we socialize and interact with many different types of people, including family, friends, colleagues, or even complete strangers. Before technology people stayed in contact via regular mail, writing letters, telephone calls and face to face communication. Today the way in which we relate to others is completely different. We use social media for finding romance, seeking employment, or getting advice. This is where social networking and social media come into play. Many people may think that the use of social media is making them more social and more interactive with society. But others question if that is really the case. Is social media making us more or less social? Is it changing the way we interact with people on a daily basis? Is it having a more positive or negative impact on society?
I attended the "Sex, Gender, and Commodity on Facebook" Pop Culture Series event. The presentation illustrated the power and impact Facebook has on us, our relationships, and in our lives. Ceilan and Jeff were describing Facebook as an ideology that calls us to participate and become a part of it. The social network was a commodity that has turned into an important necessity in our lives. Facebook is a way for people to keep score and evaluating themselves against their friends and family; by comparing their accomplishments, social lives, and possessions. It is constructed to be a template for a simple, flattened, and edited construction of one's self and identity. It allows you to share your life with others on the Internet by sharing the six essentials: work and education, places lived, relationship, family, basic information, and contact information.
Social media is known around the entire world, whether it is used or not, it is very well known. Social media is a very large part of today’s society in many different ways, as by many different people. Whether it is brought through in the classroom, or just sitting on a couch, it is one of the most popular ways to kill time as well as learn. Studies have shown that even older generations have become very fond of social media, and have come to depend on it more and more as the days go by. Statistics show that the “golden era” of social media started in 2001, and continues to improve and increase to this day. Social media came into my life during my middle school years. Facebook was the most known social media site during this time, and my parents were very

The most popular of these websites, Myspace, Facebook and now Twitter, are on their way to the top of the charts for most visited sites on the Internet. Recently networks have constituted a fundamental for analyzing and modeling complex systems. Social networks are typical examples of complex networks. A social net work consists of all the people-friends, family, colleague and others. Line of inquiry: The positives and negatives of Facebook and the influences over the world.
Social media has become an unquestionable part of our everyday lives. We do not even think anything of it, because so many people have accounts on websites like Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, etc., that are checked and updated daily. Those who have a life on the Internet do not always realize that they are losing their connections with the real world (CBC Article). Nowadays, a reputation online is more important, and communication thrives through social networking. New cliques are created, and some are even finding a way to make a living online. Social media seems to have quite the impact, especially on teenagers. However, most do not see the impact that it has. Social media has drastically changed how we communicate. Not too long ago, we communicated through the mail, on a landline telephone, and in person. Today, we send text messages; leave voice messages; use instant messenger; send emails; talk through headphones, cell phones, and online video phones; and, of course, interact through the Internet where a plethora of social media tools has redefined communication (Toronto Star). There is no doubt that social media has taken over people’s life in this generation. People want to constantly know what the latest news is; whether it be sports, gossip or public affairs. Social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have broken barriers of space and time, enabling us to interact with more people every day of the week, anywhere on the planet. Social media has become deeply embedded in our society and it is hard to get rid of our technological cravings. This essay will unpack a few major issues associated with social media and its affect on social interaction.
With little fanfare in 2004, the social media giant known as Facebook was brought into the world. Though it began as the innocent product of a desire to contact friends, Facebook was changed the face of communication unlike outlet before. Beloved by many for its openness, Facebook has brought into society a feeling of connectivity that allows any person to just reach out and share their life’s story into cyberspace in a nanosecond. For this reason, the emotions brought on by Facebook have resulted in the evolution of generations young and old. Yet years later, we are becoming aware of the dark side to the determent of the same individuals once addicted to its hourly interaction. In this transformation from adoration to hated, Facebook has impacted relationships in many facets of today’s society in negative ways.
For many, social media has become their source of an outlet, allowing them to forget the stress in their daily lives. This allows them to develop a strong need to keep the source of their stress reliever close by, and Facebook is a major example of these sources. With so many people relying on Facebook to alleviate them of their stress, it’s not hard to realize that addiction to Facebook is on the rise. Most of these Facebook addicts exist in our generation, mainly the high school and college age groups. There are many different factors to why Facebook is extremely popular among this age group. For example, Facebook allows its users to meet new acquaintances while staying connected with older acquaintances. It is also a convenient way of sharing experiences with others, while at the same time being able to see what journeys their friends and family have experienced. Each one of these plays a major role on why Facebook has become an addiction to many not only in our generation, but to older generations as well. Zarremohzzabie et al. informs us that “ sometimes users cannot stop themselves from using Facebook to excess, allowing it to take up more and more of their time and thoughts, without any concrete outcome-like an outcome-like many addictions.” Although Facebook addiction may not seem like a massive problem, within the journal, information from an American
The days when people took time to sit down and physically interact with other social beings are far behind us — when Facebook was not required to remind one’s birthday, when hand written notes folded into tiny triangles was the trendy medium of communication among friends, during classes or in the hallways. As a matter of fact, social networking has given a whole new meaning to the word “communication.” Today, our generation revolves around Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other such social-networking sites where we tend to spend significant amount of time. Considering how these social sites have gained immense popularity over the years, our way of lives, as it seems is heading towards an unexplored direction. There is no denying that these social sites are helping us maintain online relationships with our friends, but the moment we get behind our computers or mobile phones to get in touch with our “virtual friends,” we seem to neglect the friends who are physically around us. Therefore, are social networking sites affecting our real-life relationships without our acknowledgement? Have we become too reliant on these social sites to show the world who we truly are?
Our society today has become dependent on social media to entertain, excite, and inform each other on the newest and latest hot topics of today’s world. Some people cannot go as long as an hour without checking their social media websites whether it is on the phone, computer, Ipad, or any other electronic devise with internet. The creators of social media have made it easier to recognize and draw the user in with notifying pop-ups every time something new happens in the cyber world. The easier it gets, the more addicting it makes it to check every second. Also, it’s not only the youth and teenagers using these social media cites; it also claims adults as well. One of the main reasons people make social media accounts is because people are nosey about other people’s lives. They get a social media page such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to monitor people and see what they are missing out of in the world. People post pictures to their “page” for everyone to see how good they look or how funny they are. Since everyone has a social media account, others feel obligated to make one, two, or even three accounts. What used to be rare is now typical for a normal person to have at l...
The world as we once knew it is changing. Some may debate on whether this progress is for the better or worse. The evolution of communication has taken flight and social media is the first passenger boarding its plane. With the development of social media networks such as Facebook and others, staying connected to the outside world from your home, office or car is more accessible now than ever. These methods of communication have simply become “the norm” and is widely accepted around the nation. We as people, whether openly admitting or not, fail to realize that in order to stay relevant in some field or aspect the only resort is to grow with the times of communication. Why? The world has begun to center their lives around social connections. These social platforms have become our entertainment, life counselors and showcases for our futures. Sadly, the past has become just that… the past. With such social powerhouses on the steady rise, lives of others will no longer be mysteries. Access to school information, events, company gatherings or family trips will always provide some sort of insight to the public eye.
