There has been controversy over the sentencing for many years. Many people call it inhumane and claim that it cannot be undone if a state decides later that the person sentenced might not have deserved the death penalty. There are many organizations throughout the world as well that are against the punishment. For example, the American Civil Liberties Union who wants to put an end to the death penalty for underlying purposes. They believe their job is to “defend and preserve the individuals’ rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States” (American Civil Liberties Union). One pro is it gives closure to the victims’ families once they are convicted. A con is that many people believe it sends the wrong message. Another pro is that justice is being served. There are so many debates about whether the death penalty should be abolished or not and many people in today’s world are conflicted about whether or not to keep it. Many people also look at the criminal’s point of view when debating whether or not to sentence them to the death penalty. Some people argue that although the victim’s family is getting closure the prisoner’s family is going to be dealing with the loss of their relative even though he might hav. Another reason the death penalty could be falsely given is if the person could have a possible mental illness and if they do not get the proper testing the prosecutor will not have any idea. A big argument for why the death penalty should be abolished is because even though the person convicted is being executed, it does not bring the victim back to life. I believe that capital punishment is the right thing depending on the circumstances. I think the prosecutors need to look more closely to all the evidence presented to them when debating on if a person deserves the sentencing or not. When looking at a case, not all the information could be given and some more evidence might appear after the person has been sentenced or executed. I think that many people feel the same way and believe prosecutors need to take a look at every factor given to them before deciding if killing the person is truly the right thing to do or not. I believe that it is needed for extreme crimes but other punishments should be considered as well before directly turning to the death penalty. I also feel that the criminal should serve a certain amount of sentencing before being put on Death Row.
