The Keystone pipeline has caused many calamities towards the economy, sacred native sites and affected the health of the community. Although the pipeline has its flaws, some may argue that the pipeline has created countless positive aspects for everyone. The known saying is that the pipeline will create numerous jobs for unemployed citizens by former President Trump. Everyone is tbeing misinformed of the negative side effects the pipeline has created for thousands of endless native people and job offers. With that thought, there are many ways to handle the pipeline, and the community it is affecting. The physical harm taken place towards hundreds of people because they are trying to protect their land is brutal. The government has told its …show more content…
civilians that the pipeline is going to provide plenty of jobs to help people who are currently unemployed. The question behind it is, What will happen to the jobs of the people once they complete the pipeline? Currently, President Donald Trump stated on CNN, “The State Department concluded on January 2015 that the project would create about 42,000 jobs directly and indirectly, but just 3,900 construction jobs if it was to be built in one year. The pipeline would create 50 permanent jobs to maintain the pipeline.” The main idea is an argument stating they will be providing jobs.
A further idea is to create the pipeline in a shorter amount of time and then there would be fewer job openings. Trump has also reversed Obama’s administration’s decision of blocking the pipeline. Trump reversed the prior decision and officially signed the papers it has become a controversial topic that was spreading. Also, stated on the Labor 4 Sustainability, “When the company’s own figures showed that the project would actually hire only 5,000 to 6,000 workers over the 3-year construction period, a large proportion of them not high-paid, high-skill jobs but low-skilled, low-paid pick and shovel jobs.” Companies along with people in higher use miscommunication to people who are in desperate need of a job. The use of the pipeline has not had any type of positive impact. The only positive impact there could have been being having more jobs and being dependent on oil, but those always come with a catch. The Keystone Pipeline is being built so that the United States can become dependent on there own fossil fuels. The cost of transporting oil from other countries will no longer be in the equation and will save the United States plenty of
money. The downside of this idea is that the world is already dealing with early signs of climate change that is killing the environment along with the living species. In the article Labor Network for Sustainability, “Scientists calculate that the safe level for carbon in the atmosphere is 350 parts per millions. But we are already significantly over that level — which is why we are already facing devastating climate change. Only by drastically limiting our carbon emissions can we limit still greater devastation.” This statement is explaining what the earth's carbon should be at to be in the safe and healthy scale but we have overpassed those levels. They are also saying that the pipeline will affect the carbon atmosphere in a more negative outcome. They also stated, “The energy strategy is to introduce large quantities of oil from Canadian tar sands. According to the US Department of Environmental Protection, the greenhouse gas emissions from Canadian oil sands crude oil will be more than 80% greater than oil refined in the US. Independent estimates run up to three times more global warming pollution than conventional oil.” The meaning behind it is that the United States is polluting the earth more than it can take. Throughout the years the earth has been through wildfires, hurricanes, tsunamis etc. With that, the pipeline has caused a couple leaks throughout the years. The pipeline ended up spilling underground in South Dakota, also naming is the largest spill to ever occur in that state. One of the spills happened in South Dakota on April 2nd, 2016 six miles east of Menno South Dakota. The second leak happened a year later more recently on November 16, 2016, occurring three miles southeast of Amherst South Dakota. States on CNN, “On April 2016, there was a 400-barrel release -- or 16,800 gallons -- with the majority of the oil cleanup completed in two months, Walsh said. About 5,000 barrels of oil spilled Thursday.” On November 16th, 2017, “A total of 210,000 gallons of oil leaked Thursday from the Keystone Pipeline in South Dakota, the pipeline’s operator, TransCanada, said.” During the article, officials say that there was no water contamination and they were also able to shut down the spill as quickly as possible. They claim that their number one priority is the health and safety of all civilians but they are not sure what caused both spills. It happened twice showing that they can happen more often than they can assume. There isn’t enough room for trial and error to occur during this project. People, animals, and the environment will always be in danger during and after the process of the pipeline is happening. Another risk factor of the pipeline is that is has began to endanger the lives of others and contaminates drinking water. Not only is the water used for drinking but used for laundry, dishes, and bathing. Stated by BusinessInsider, “increased incidences of cancer and digestive problems in people who had ingested the oil directly (in drinking water) or indirectly (through eating the meat of livestock exposed to the oil).” They have also stated, “In addition, people who had used contaminated water for bathing or laundry appeared to experience a higher incidence of skin problems, ranging from mild rashes to severe and lasting eczema and malignant skin cancers.” The pipeline involves oil fracking the damages include toxic oil entering water streams for nearby residents. The issue comes down to the side effects are not being recognized and health risks being taken seriously enough to stop the pipeline work. In the article above it states that they did not find any water contamination once the pipeline ended up bursting but haven’t updated on their recent spill that happened this year. The causes are not yet known and there have been cases of toxic water for people who live closer to the construction and being exposed to these harmful conditions. Last but not least, the pipeline has interfered with sacred native land and water usage. The earth and water have always been sacred to the land of natives and has become a controversy between people. CNN has written, “Oftentimes burial grounds are the sacred sites that are threatened or destroyed. Understanding what these grounds look like, what desecration means, requires wisdom most of us don't have.” The problem with what is happening is that there is no respect for the dead and meaning behind the land and territory Trump is taking over. On USAToday, they state “Native Americans say that section of pipeline would threaten their water supply, sacred sites, and religious rights. “Water is life. So, in attacking our water, Donald Trump is attacking our lives, families, and right to self-determination,” said Dallas Goldtooth who works for the Indigenous Environmental Network and is the son of Tom Goldtooth.” The main reasons Native Americans are fighting is due to their sacred water being in danger to their health and wildlife. While they are protesting calmly and using their voices they are not being heard. But rather being ignored by state officials and being forcefully stopped by troopers/military soldiers to discontinue their movement. Because of where they placed the pipeline Natives have begun to camp out and protest peacefully to stop the remaining process of getting any further. But since they began to protest military soldiers have started using forceful and harmful methods. Another quote stated in the same article says, “Water is the "first medicine;" it sustains us in our mother's womb, Spotted Eagle says. It's used in ceremonies to heal people. The steam gives off in a sweat lodge, for example, purifies. Water can clean a spirit when it's bleeding. It can calm a person and restore balance.” It states that water is more than something you drink from and become hydrated. The meaning is more powerful but to politicians and others, it is nothing more than an area to contaminate. One ethic that shows out more than the rest is the health and water contamination problems. Water is an important part of life and is something everyone depends on to survive. Water is a major necessity for humans and living organisms throughout the world. Pipelines and oil fracking contaminate water supplies and move from multiple water streams. Leading to diseases and death spreading across the nation. There are more negatives in this situation and allowing money to be the eye of the entire project has become a dangerous gamble being taken. With all the tragedies happening with clean water demands not being upheld and no one taking account of the issues, the pipeline should be stopped since it is creating more health problems. In conclusion, the cons outweigh the pros in the pipeline project. People in higher positions who are in charge of this project should be held accountable for the issues the community is facing. The laws behind this should be changed for better purposes and not use the excuse of having more jobs for unemployed seeking workers. I believe that the government should look at all the lies and health risks this operation is putting on others. And be more cautious with the miscommunication of jobs being provided.
no easy situation to address. Is it worth BC’s approval to build the pipeline, when it
“Urge the Senate to Stop the Risky Keystone XL Pipeline”. Letter. League of Conservation of Voters. Change.org. Web. 10 December 2013
The Dakota Access Pipeline and the Keystone XL Pipeline are two pipeline projects that were suspended in the past. These pipelines were stopped because they could have a big impact on people and the environment. The making of these pipelines would cause a great amount of carbon pollution. Recently, President Trump signed the order to approve the pipeline project. The projects have pros and cons, the people in favor of the pipelines think we would be able to rely less on foreign oil.
In this essay we will be looking at why the Keystone XL Pipeline should not be built. This is a hot controversial issue that has been in the news for awhile. We will discuss the pros and cons of what will happen if the United States passes legislature to allow the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built. You have to ask yourself if destroying the environment is for our children is worth it to make a few billions richer or maybe little bit cheaper gas. If you agree with building the Keystone XL Pipeline you need to look your children in the eyes and tell them you’re sorry for destroying the environment for them and their children.
The oil companies, the customers, and the average employee will not benefit from the construction of this pipeline. If the pipeline does its job, it will take the whole load of oil from Canada to the United States. The other companies which are already responsible for transporting oil will not be required to do their jobs, as it is being done for them. All of these companies will go out of business. With 3 more pipeline plans in place for Canada, people are wondering whether they will ever need to build a new one again. With all of these companies going out of business, many employees will have to be laid off. This will cause insufficient manual labor, thereafter causing a lack of jobs. All the former employees are going to have to find another job. Since they won't have time to prepare in advance, for that time being, they also won’t have any source of income. "In our view, Trans Mountain plus the Keystone pipeline would make the Energy East pipeline less needed," said Divya Reddy, a global energy analyst with the Eurasia Group. "In terms of the production outlook for the oil sands over the next 10 years, it doesn't seem like that extra capacity is actually needed." Nothing is going to happen right away or very fast. So, in the instance that the pipeline doesn’t work, the other companies will still be running. This means both things will still be used. This will cause competition for attention and/or tasks between the pipeline and existing companies. This may draw attention away from the task at hand. “While we forecast continued growth in Canadian oil production, there might be too much pipe if Trans Mountain expansion and Line 3 replacement and Keystone XL all start up by 2020” said Afolbi Ogunnaike, a senior analyst at Wood Mackenzie, in a note. Because of this pipeline, people are going to lose their
According to Brendan Smith, in his article “5 Reasons Why the Keystone Pipeline is bad for the Economy”, the project will have negative effects on the country’s economy. He argues that, building the pipeline will harm the economy because its impacts on the environment are costly and it will force the citizens and the government to pay the price. He continues by stating that the project will reduce jobs in the country because the fossil fuel industry had slashed its workforce. Smith points out that the effects of the project will be felt mostly by the poor people because they will not manage to cope with the adverse climate brought about by the increased use of fossil fuel. Moving on, he argues that the Keystone Pipeline will not sustain the economy because it cannot create more jobs in the country (Smith n.p). This is because a sustainable economy is one that creates more jobs...
The Keystone XL pipeline continues dividing the opinion of the people and being a controversial issue. The precious “black gold”, represents one of the main factors that moves the economy, nationally and globally. This extra-long pipeline will transport oil all the way from Canada to Texas. Some experts and the private oil corporation, who is the one in charge of this project, point to the benefits of this project, for example, will make the USA more independent from foreign oil, will create thousands of jobs and improve the economy. Nevertheless, are experts revealing how the pipeline is an unnecessary risk and will be negative for the environment, dangerous for the population living close to the big pipes, and long-term negative for the
The Keystone Pipeline started construction in 2008 for the main purpose of connecting Canadian and American oil refineries to transport crude oil from the oil sands of Canada faster and more efficient. So far the first three phases of the pipeline have been completed but the proposed and most controversial is Phase IV. It connects Hardisty, Alberta to Steele City, Oklahoma which requires a presidential permit and it also connects the 485-mile southern leg known as the Gulf Coast Project between Steele City and Port Arthur, Texas, which is now operating (Eilperin). The benefits of the pipeline include an increase in jobs, contribute $3.4 billion to the U.S economy and also save time and money from transporting the oil by pipeline instead of tanks and rails. At the same time it would be a great harm to the environment, making the climate unstable, and could cause possible future oil spills. The articles covering the Keystone Pipeline generally list out the same points, covering the same benefits and consequences of building the pipeline. Sources like Fox News and CNS have more of an opposition towards the pipeline and narrow in on the risks and of the effects it would have on the people. Whereas news stations such as CNN and The Washington Post address both sides of the controversy but are subtle about being in favor of the pipeline. The international sources such as Al Jazeera and Reuters oppose the pipeline and are more open with supporting the environmentalists.
Many companies in the industry wish to see the newest phase of the pipeline completed because many believe that it would be very beneficial to almost everyone. One of the biggest benefits that the construction of a new section of pipeline would provide is the large amount of jobs that it would create. The new section of pipeline spans a large area from Canada to Nebraska. The sheer amount of construction that would need to be completed would create many new jobs.
In most ways people think that the pipeline industry is all for itself, and in its process it destroys the enviroment. In fact there are protests and riots happening often, to say the least.People also hop on the bandwagon saying that the industry should be protested for its safety hazards. In this paper I will explain how the industry takes every precaution to prevent environmental and personal harm and what they can actually do for you if the right of way runs through your land.
In today's global economy, energy is one of the most crucial and sought after commodities. Who supplies it and how much they supply determines how much influence they have over other countries as well as the global economy. This is why hydraulic fracturing is currently such an important and controversial topic in the United States. Hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as "fracking" or hydrofracturing, is the process of using pressurized liquids to fracture rocks and release hydrocarbons such as shale gas, which burns more efficiently than coal. This booming process of energy production provides a much needed economic boost, creating jobs and providing gas energy for Americans. The efficiently burning shale gas reduces carbon emission from electricity production plants, reducing carbon footprints on the environment. However, the process of hydraulic fracturing uses millions of gallons of pressurized liquid, which contains toxic chemicals, and some of this water is left over undealt with. The air near fracking sites is often also polluted and unsafe for nearby community residents. Injecting millions of gallons of water laced with toxic chemicals into the rock thousands of feet deep can cause earthquakes, causing a safety hazards for all nearby areas. Hydraulic Fracturing makes rare natural gases easily attainable, boosting the economy and reducing carbon emissions. However, the negative side effects such as contaminated water and air, make hydraulic fracturing a process that may not be worth the benefits.
The U.S federal government should significantly increase fracking because oil and gas fracking is big business in America, with more than two million hydraulically fractured wells across the country producing 43 and 67 percent of our national oil and gas outputs, respectively. But in my opinion these wells also nearly played a secondary role as nuclear waste storage sites and had the Atomic Energy Commission had its way with Project Plowshare. And fracking is the process of pumping water deep into the Earth, specifically into underground oil and gas reserves, at tremendous pressures in order to break apart the surrounding rock and free the energy product, which can then be pumped out and used. However in the mid 1950s, scientists from the Atomic Energy Commission and officials from the U.S. Bureau of Mines did begin experimenting with an alternative method of fracking, one that employed nuclear bombs more powerful than anything we dropped on the Japanese.
They felt they haven't been "properly consulted", and they felt none of their concerns were met with any real analysis or consideration. The People of Plateau are going to challenge it through legal remedies. Even though, some of First Nations have signed a mutual-benefit agreements with the owner of the pipeline. The People of Plateau and the people of other First Nations was looking for a degree of respect that is so far absent from the federal and provincial governments as well as Kinder Morgan, the owner of the
These oil wells are great for the economic growth, inventing new jobs and fueling most of our vehicles. The Earth has literal oceans of oil stored in its soil waiting to be harvested. Meaning, crude oil isn’t renewable, and eventually it will run out. According to the British petroleum, the multinational gas and oil company headquarter, there is only enough to sustain the planet for roughly around 53.3 more years. The result of oil depletion will turn turbulent, and we will have to resort to renewable energy. The issue concerning this is that, renewable energies such as solar, water and wind have not been perfected and can be too expensive to use. In theory, renewable energy is still a stable and natural energy source that could potentially save the future. If the we invest in perfecting these energy sources instead of pipelines, oil companies could finally stop reaping the Earth of its oil and prevent a future crisis 50 years from now. We wouldn’t have the need to burn fossil fuels, and we could be one step closer to a cleaner Earth. Nonetheless, most people nowadays care only for shortcuts that will lead them to big money, even if it sacrifices our world’s interior, and the health of those that live upon
There has been an immense amount of evidence that shows the United States government violating agreements that were made. The state of North Dakota believes that constructing this pipeline is an advancement in the market economy, but they are disregarding the people that will be greatly affected by it. These people are the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, their sacred land is being violated by the government and corporations.
