The days of a fair complex-ion being the “in-style” are long gone. Nowadays the way to appear more attrac-tive is to lie in a bed of artificial ultraviolet rays and get a fake tan. Today, 2.3 teenage girls tan annu-ally in an indoor bed (Komis 34). This isn’t to say that boys never tan and are innocent; it’s just that the majority of tanners under the age of 18 are girls.
So why do girls feel that it is necessary to do this to their bodies, when there are so many reasons not to, the biggest being a greater chance of skin can-cer later in life?
Let’s first start off by explaining just exactly what indoor tanning is. Most would agree that in-door tanning is going to a salon where there are sev-eral tanning beds where us-ers can choose to lie down or stand and then are ex-posed to very high intensi-ties of ultraviolet, or UV, rays in periods of twenty minutes or less (Loh 1).

From their roots in the 1800’s through the Victorian era and into modern society the reader gets a glimpse of the way young women evaluate their bodies and turn them into body projects, and is still to this day sweeping the nation more than ever.

Tanning salons have always been popular destinations for those who may not spend a lot of time outdoors, or for those who prefer to be tan year-round. Unfortunately, such a business attracts young adults, especially around the time of high school formals. The dangers of tanning are numerous, and introducing oneself to such dangers so early in one’s life is reckless. Tanning is a risk, and tanning at such an early age can be fatal. Currently, the states of California, Illinois, Nevada, Texas, and Vermont have made the educated decision to ban tanning from minors. It would be wise for all remaining states in the United States to follow suite.

Indoor tanning is a controversial topic and has even been the subject of lawmakers in many states for at least the past ten years. Tanning is a symbol of “health and wealth” for many living in the developed countries and yet it is associated with one of the most deadly cancers known to human beings because of the chemical reaction the Ultra Violet (UV) rays at the cellular level. The research is clear that the use of indoor tanning beds can be dangerous and yet, there are some benefits of using indoor tanning beds. Research has also shown that exposure to UV radiation contributes to the synthesis of Vitamin D in the body, it also can positively boost mood, can heal certain types of skin disorders and may also be helpful for those suffering from fibromyalgia. The indoor tanning industry should make known the risks of using a tanning bed known before selling their use to people. Before one makes a decision to use a tanning bed she should be well informed of the risks and benefits.
It is also true that we can change and enhance our body features through elective cosmetic surgeries. Many people choose to undergo these surgeries because they are unhappy with their appearance. I feel that these procedures are unnecessary, and that you shouldn’t undergo surgery unless you need it for your health. I believe that people go through these procedures purely because they have low self-esteem. Society tells them that there is something wrong with their body, and they feel that they need to change it to fit in. I think that this is a way to see if someone is truly happy with themselves, as we all should. No one is perfect, so no one should try to be it. It’s just a waste of time and money on their part all so they can fit in, which I think is pathetic. It is always a risk to undergo surgery, and there is no reason to put yourself in unnecessary risk. I think that it is ridiculous to put yourself through something like that. If I had a ten year old dark-skinned African American daughter who wanted blue contact lens, have her skin chemically lightened, and straighten her hair, I definitely say no.
