In the southern backcountry during the American Revolution, there was a different style of warfare present. The British forces excelled in traditional war tactics, such as bayonet combat. The Battles in the New England region were more traditional but, the continental forces struggled to successful come out of a battle. The commanders in the southern backcountry realized they would never win the war if they continued to fight traditionally against the British forces. So several of the commanders took to a guerilla style of fighting when the war turned to the south. With the guerilla style of fighting they realized with the rough terrain of the southern Backcountry that traditional warfare would be ineffective and foolish for most instants.
During this entire period the British were starting to make attempts to intimidate the colonists in hopes to end the rebellions. It seemed that the more and more England tried to scare the people, the angrier they got. The tactics obviously didn't work, but instead pushed the colonists even further into standing up against Britain. The British soldiers in America were told not to entice violence, and especially not to kill anybody.
In the 1770’s the British army was well known for its monetary wealth and professional well trained militia. American colonists were slowly getting more and more fed up with the inequality and taxation under British rule so they took a stand. Americans known as Rebels or Patriots fought in the Revolutionary War to gain independence from Britain. Some colonists also known as loyalists, thought that the Patriots had no chance against the professional militia so they stayed loyal to the crown. Although improbable at the start of the American Revolution, the colonists were able to defeat the British army and formally gain independence because they had great leadership from George Washington, similar goals that created high morale, and aided from
I think our yearbook theme this year should be a wild west theme. One reason I think our yearbook theme should be the wild west is its a uniqe theme, almost nothing like it. The backgrounds for the wild west may be a silhouette of a mountain with a cowboy on a horse or anything like that. Some backgrounds of school events might be square dances or a cowboy kicking soccer ball. We could also incorporate founts that go with the theme we could also use gold background for the gold rush.
Shays’ rebellion originated from a small group of farmers from Massachusetts fighting against high taxes. These farmers organized their resistance in ways similar to the American Revolutionary War. They called special meetings of the people to protest conditions. They even agreed on coordinated protests involving themselves and other people. The rebels closed courts by force in the fall of 1786 and liberated other imprisoned farmers who would be sympathetic to the rebels’ cause. Later on, the petty revolts flared into fully fledged revolts once the rebels came under the leadership of Daniel Shays. Shays was a general in the Continental Army that fought against the British during the American Revolutionary War; this is why the rebels had similar tactics that were used against the British. Grant’s strategy was to fight the war of attrition that President Lincoln was in favor of; however, Lee fought offensive-defensive war which was different from Jefferson’s idea of fighting a complete defensive war. Creating blockades on coastal lines and controlling railroads were used as well. Even today, similar tactics are used to cut off enemies from supplying their peers. Though the Civil War was the deadliest war on American soil, many tactics and strategies were learned from it and improved. Works Cited 1.
The American Revolution and the Civil War have numerous similarities and differences even though they occurred almost 100 years apart. The American Revolution was a political upheaval during 1760’s and 1770’s, while the Civil War was a fight between a divided nation during the 1860’s regarding the subject of slavery. As Southerners held slaves captive and forced them to work against their will, the Colonists were held captive and forced to pay ridiculous taxes put in place by Britain. Similarities and differences from both the American Revolution and the Civil War can be seen through the cause of both wars, specific battles from each war, and the results of each war.
From a basic standpoint you see that the british have defeated many different armies, giving them an appearance of being invincible. They were organized and fought well, fought as an army not an every man for themselves kind of army. So how did the unorganized army of america defeat the invincible forces of the British? Both sides had strengths, but with every strength there’s a weakness. For example a weakness to the powerful British was, they were not at home supplies took months to reach them so they had to be careful of what they used6. But the strength of the Americans were they were at home so supplies were a bit more swift in arrival, and they were fighting for a great cause, and that cause was their independence, their ability to be free and not have to take commands from the
The Northern troops needed to protect their homes and people and had the local support of the citizens. They also had more knowledge of the territory. It is considerably easier to take a man 's life when he is in your territory and coming after your people, then when you are on his. They took up guarded positions on the slopes in the range and forced the southern troops to assault up steep slants. Compelling them to run into enemy fire was the winning strategy. "Picket 's Charge," was a southern assault on the flank of the Northern protective line, and the south was compelled to
General Gage considered his force too small to effectively attack the Rebels and hold the countryside outside of Boston. At the same time he became concerned that the surrounding heights of Dorchester and Charlestown provided an excellent opportunity for Rebels to place cannon ...
First, the Revolutionary War was the first instance of Americans preserving their freedoms. We were unhappy about how the British were treating us so we fought back. One issue was taxation without representation. Some people are still unhappy about how they are being treated by the government so they fight back, like the colonists. For example, Colin Kaepernick was unhappy
While this non-traditional fighting style may have been used on occasion such as the pursuit of the British regulars from Concord, it was an exception. The rule of battle for both sides during the revolution was to use linear formations to fight set battles in the open. This tactic allowed for the massing of fire and the ability to close with the enemy in a decisive manner. In the beginning of the war, the British completely outclassed the colonial forces, especially the militia. The colonial forces did not become truly proficient tactically until they began to be drilled, and learned discipline, from Von Steuben in 1778 while wintered over in Valley Forge (Geist,
“Helplessness induces hopelessness, and history attests that loss of hope and not loss of lives is what decides the issue of war.” One of the most important wars in American history was the revolutionary war. The whole war was started with a single gunshot at the battle of Bunker Hill. When the Declaration of Independence was signed, it signified the country's freedom. However, a war had to be fought to gain independence from Great Britain. Americans were forced to choose sides. The colonists could either be a loyalist, or a patriot. Some women in the colonies developed “scarlet fever”. They thought the British soldiers were attractive. General Washington decided to make camp at a place called Valley Forge. That was a big mistake. More soldiers
The British was in a total war with France, and when they needed ways to fund for their militia, so the British impressed many American soldiers, for example, the impressment of the Chesapeake boat, brought many horrors toward the Americans. The Americans saw the impressment as a threat, pressed the Embargo Act, and was later persuaded by the Warhawks to start war against the British. The British’s main focus was to defeat France, however America came in the way, so the British had no choice, but to fight the Americans. There were many British soldiers stationed to be in a specific place to attack the Americans. The Native Indians thought that their union could be stronger if they had support from the British, so the Native Indians and
After multiple colonist upheavals, the British instilled a temporary army within the colonies to keep control uncompromised and “enforce imperial reform measures.” (Preston pg. 115). This frightened the colonists, because it led them to believe that America was soon to become completely occupied by Britain’s rule. Colonists began to resist British authority, and they fought against the king, arguing that they did not want to just be independent from Great Britain. They believed that they were creating a “new order for the ages,” or novus ordo seclorum (Yazowa
A huge advantage the colonist had was that they were mainly fighting a defensive war. The war was being fought on their home turf which meant that they knew the lay of the land. Having this distinct advantage meant they knew what problem areas to avoid, what shortcuts existed and the best possible places to hide. This only added to the lethality of their fighting style that favored a more unconventional guerilla fighting style. Not to be dismissed was the perspicuous advantage the colonist had of fighting for their rights, their liberty and their independence. They had much at stake such as losing their home, losing their livelihood, and possibly the death of their families. All together these intrinsic motivations are what formed the indomitable American fighting spirit. But I would I also be remiss if I did not talk about the phenomenal leadership that the colonists’ had. Starting with the brilliant George Washington who was considered a giant among men. To the diplomatic acumen of Benjamin Franklin which would become instrumental in securing foreign aid. As well as the savvy military appointment of the French Nobleman Marquis de Lafayette that greatly improved the colonist’s ability to secure help from the French. But alas the colonists had their fair share of disadvantages. The fact the colonies were an emerging nation meant that they did not have a vast storage of
