Solitary confinement is a form of imprisonment in which an inmate is isolated from any human contact. This form of extreme punishment is beyond incarnation and is an additional safety measure of protection for oneself or other convicts if they are considered dangerous. It’s also used as a punishment for violating prison regulations. Solitary confinement is proven to cause or worsen severe psychological problems of the inmates placed in it and cost more than regular prisons therefore it should not be used if completely unnecessary. Unless the convict is sentenced to a lifetime in solitary confinement, most likely the inmate is going to be released. With little to no human contact or connection with the outer world over the course of the punishment, it is going to be nearly impossible to rejoin human society. Some may feel safe with the criminal locked away , but don’t consider what will happen after their sentence is over. The prisoners might experience verbal or physical outbursts putting others in harm. “This is not going to make us safer. That’s not going to make us stronger. And if the individual is ultimately released, how are they going to adapt? It’s not smart, Obama” ( Priest 4). Some may argue that taking some inmates from the regular prison and putting them in solitary confinement makes the jail safer. Minor breaking of the regulations or unproved gang affiliation are getting inmates thrown into solitary confinement. These acts are cruel and inhuman to the prisoners. Not only is it unnecessary, but it also cost more than regular prison. “When used for these minor reasons, isolation has had the nefarious effect of contributing to the resentment against authorities so many prisoners have come to.
