Transportation is one of the most important services that is required by humans today. With the earth becoming more connected every day people are moving from place to place much more often. It is sad, however, that with this change “Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death of teenagers in the U.S.” (Weiland), Most cars still overwhelmingly consume fuel over hybrids or others, and in recent years carbon emissions have been directly linked to the destruction of the environment. It is safe to assume that self-driving cars of the future will be mostly electric as Tesla is currently leading the charge in this advancement. If this is true, one would only have to put instal their own solar panels to never have to pay for gas or power again. In addition, Tesla is also creating a supercharging system in which a self-driving car “can deliver itself to the nearest charging station while you are otherwise occupied” (Galland). This will not only be convenient, but will also cut emissions to zero. In the case that some self-driving cars are not electric or some are still using manual cars that use fuel there still is good news. “Self-driving cars in large number participate in a behavior known as platooning, which would significantly improve traffic conditions and congestion” (“Top 20”). This will save people not only time, but also the fuel that would normally be lost at idle in stopped traffic. Gas will also be conserved through the lack of harsh accelerations and decelerations caused by human error as “it has been shown the more your car operates at a continuous engine speed, the less fuel it consumes” (Bell 5). Like it or not, humans can be unpredictable and in a logical system of roadways, this human aspect can cause major problems. It is shown that many deaths in America can be linked back to automobile accidents. Self-driving cars will make a tremendous impact on this even in the early stages of its implementation. In fact, “81 percent of car crashes are the result of human error” (“Top 20”). This, of course, would be completely nulled if cars drove themselves. It is shown that even “if ten percent of all cars were self-driving, as many as 211,000 accidents would be prevented annually” (Bell 2). This effect is exponentially increased when in the later stages of the technology. Alone, this gives enough reason to move to self-driving cars, but the benefits do not stop there. Services created due to these accidents would begin to shrink with them. Although Google’s self-driving cars are getting a lot of attention now, the idea of a self-driving car has been around for quite a while actually. These cars have been tested to their limits, but the American people have yet to adopt the technology into their everyday lives. A brief description of their history, how they work, and finally answer the question, will self-driving cars ever be adopted widely by the American public?
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently, or having the freedom to do so. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. This technology is self-driving cars. A self-driving car is a car that is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. Currently, about 33 companies including Tesla, BMW, and Google, are working to create self-driving cars that can prevent human errors and change the way people view driving. Self-driving cars, have other benefits besides preventing human error, such as less traffic congestion, and less fuel consumption. However, with these benefits come some costs such as cyber security problems and ethical dilemmas. So, should we have self-driving cars, or not?
The self-driving car would cause many people to lose their jobs. The careers that would no longer be needed due to the self-driving car include but are not limited to those who drill oil, taxi drivers, and personal injury lawyers. If self-driving cars were electric, oil drillers would be needed less and a majority could lose their jobs. If there’s self-driving cars, there could easily be a self-driving taxi service. If self-driving cars reduce accidents a majority of personal injury lawyers’ business would disappear. Self-driving cars are the wave of the future. There is much debate regarding the impact a self-driving car will have on our society and economy. Some experts believe fully autonomous vehicles will be on the road in the next 5-10 years (Anderson). This means a vehicle will be able to drive on the road without a driver or any passengers.
