Are Professional Athletes Overpaid? By Jiday Mardre English IV Mr. Wilson Period 6 March 14, 2017 There are a lot of people out here struggling and starving. Some people are one paycheck away from becoming broke. Professional athletes don’t have to worry about that. They are paid more than enough money that they should never go broke put some of them do anyways. Some people think professional athletes are paid way too much. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be getting paid but I think they are given way too much money. Professional athletes only work Professional athletes back in the day used to play for fun I think the money is taking the fun from the game. Some athletes are so focused on the money they forget they have to at least enjoy themselves while they are doing what they are doing. I think the people that actually do all the hard work like firefighters and doctors she be the ones getting paid like that. Doctors have to go through a lot of schooling to get where they are at and some professional athletes didn’t even go to college they went straight to the league and started earning more money than doctors do already. Now let me go back to some reasons why they deserve what they are paid. Professional athletes spend a lot of time practicing. They work at least forty hours a week. They have to go over and remember a lot of playbooks. Some people say that professional athletes are actually underpaid. Take LeBron James for example they paid LeBron twenty three million to play almost a hundred games last season. The sports industry is only getting bigger and bigger which means they are making more and more money. People say that professional athletes don’t work they just play. I’m here to tell you that they are wrong. It takes
Players do not deserve the money they receive. There are people who do much more than the players do. Why do teachers not get paid millions of dollars to teach kids? Some of those kids end up going on to become professional athletes. Police officers and firemen risk their lives to keep people safe and most of them do not even make any more than 95 thousand dollars a year (Megerian). These athletes get fined more money than that and hand it over like someone just asked them for one dollar. Players have all of this money and do not even do anything worth earning it. Why do they get this money? It is because fans value athletes more than the important things in life like education and family.
Many people in today’s world complain about how much Pro Athletes get pay. So I ask are Pro athletes overpaid? Look at it in this sense; they are living their dreams just like most business men do everyday. If you think that professional sports is not a job then just try to walk in the shoes of a athlete for a day. Sports, like medicine, healthcare, or software, are a business. In that business, owners pay their players what they deem they are worth.
Do athletes get overpaid? Is it fair that the average NFL player gets paid 1.9 million dollars a year while the average heart surgeon gets paid 533 thousand dollars annually? I think that professional athletes don’t get paid too much. There are multiple reasons that proves that their pay is not excessive. Their careers are short, they risk their body for our entertainment, and they motivate children.
Athletes are being paid hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars to entertain us. They work less hours than the average person and make considerably more. Athletes all around the world are paid handsomely because they are talented and have extensive knowledge of their sport. But, is that knowledge and talent really worth what they are earning every season? Compared to some of the most common and needed professions are athletes really earning their paychecks? It’s time to take a deep look into what requirements besides natural ability athletes really need? How many hours are they expected to put in a week and what their job really is.
Every day, people around the world complain about professional athletes salaries. Even though the top athletes make millions of dollars every year, the majority of athletes do not make any more than the average working class citizen. There are also many risks along with the job, and job security is very unstable. Expenses and taxes also limit the amount of money an athlete makes. Tax rates are extremely high for the men and women who participate in professional sports.
Do you think professional athletes are overpaid? You might think they earn more than what they are worth for playing half a year, but athletes have many things which contribute to their salary. Some of these things include their earnings from endorsements, ticket sales, performance, merchandise, their social contributions, and TV ratings. Although there are many factors that contribute to their salary, professional athletes may be overpaid because as a society, we contribute to their success. So, in the end, part of the athlete’s salary comes from the people who support the sports in the first place. These are just some of the reasons why athletes are paid so much money.
In a week a tower climber makes less than a thousand dollars. Athletes do work hard, but they aren’t worth more than the risks normal people take during work. Sports is a favorite pastime of a lot of people, but even with the sacrifices and work athletes put in to their sport, they shouldn’t get millions for it. Some go a whole season or don’t have a big risk factor and are guaranteed millions when farmers and firefights aren’t getting paid and ¼ of that. Athletes are getting injured and still making money,
They’re paid how much? Student all around the world have been playing these games their whole lives and haven’t earned a dime! Not only do kids not earn salaries, but also athletes have been receiving millions. Many professional athletes are given millions of dollars. Some people think that these athletes don’t need a bucketload of money, which is completely true. Regular families that would work their entire lives wouldn’t even come close to how much they make and it’s preposterous. Athletes are being overpaid and something needs to be done.
It is the education they get that matters. Just because they aren’t receiving money for what they do doesn’t mean they are aren’t being paid. Millions of dollars are spent updating the areas they play and train in. The reality is athletes are working full-time jobs for an average wage. While the institutions they are attending are getting rich, they are missing out on their pay day.
(Business Insider) However, the average American full time worker spends 40 hours a week working 5 days from 8am to 5pm. So on average an athlete spends 3.3 hours more then the average full time worker, but they still don’t get paid. Athletes don’t consider the sport a fun activity any more, at that point it becomes their full time job. But let’s not forget that they have to go to school too. If an athlete is taking 10 hours of classes each week and spends recommended 4 hours of studying for an each class, that means, that athlete needs to spend 40 hours each week on studying and attending classes. So at the end, that same athlete needs to work 83.3 hours a week to keep his/hers scholarships and remain having good grades in school. This is as same as having two full time jobs. ESPN’s commentator, Michael Wilbon says "The players have become employees of the universities and conferences as much as students-- employees with no compensation, which not only violates common decency but perhaps even the law"
In closing, these athletes are making too much money in a society that traditionally bases salaries on the value of ones work. These athletes do not know what real work is or how hard it is to make a dollar. Although their job is difficult, they do not play a role in our economy like their salaries indicate. Therefore, they should receive less money.
The salary of professional athletes are always being debated on whether they make too much or it 's the right amount they should make. Some of the athletes do make millions and millions of dollars, but there is some that don 't. Anyways in order to make the millions first an athletes must make it to the professional level. For example in soccer only 1.4% of people actually make it to the professional level. So the rest of the people make it for other sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and others. To be considered a professional athlete you must be getting payed to play a sport. They will be playing for a league and even tournaments and get rewarded with more money if they win. Some may think an athlete
Are professional sports athletes are paid too much? Some people think that athletes are paid way too much to play sports and do something they love. While others and I think that they are paid just enough. Athletes put their heart into sports to entertain. They are putting their bodies in danger to do something they love. I do not believe that pro athletes are overpaid. They work very hard and are at many risks in what they do.
When addressing the value of entertainment, there is without a doubt, that we as a society value entertainment highly. But there is no reason that these athletes, who are here to merely entertain us, get paid higher wages than those that save our lives and teach us such as medical doctors and teachers. I find it ridiculous that players make millions of dollars a year, and yet demand more. The entertainment that these athletes provide is solely entertainment; it is not essential to the function or productivity of society. If I were to become a professional football player I would not complain about my salary for many reasons. I am playing the sport that I love and getting paid for it. The minimum wage for football is well over $100,000 a year, as is for many professional sports. These reasons by their lonesome are enough to warrant that the salary professional athletes are paid is suffice.
Sport has always entertained and influenced our lives. It creates dreams for children and goals for adults. However, many fans are oblivious to the millions they pocket each year. It is without doubt that our sports stars are grossly overpaid. Their annual earnings exceed those we make in a lifetime, even when compared to highly qualified professionals.
