People may be wondering about the point stated previously; well the meaning of being an American has a diversity of viewpoints. Constantly the Americans have face many challenges creating different point of view that could change the meaning of being and American; but the ability to improve common life, to have liberty, and to be a nonconformist with a rational thinking mind means to be an American as a previously being state in this argument. Discussing another point of view like Jonathan Edwards and Ralph Emersons have different from previous authors point of view. Jonathan Edwards is more like to a region person that life and dies for God at any cost because on his sermon he claim “But here you are in the land of the living and in the house
of God, and have an opportunity to obtain salvation.”(50) so this basically means that if you don't follow God at his home or see him as a salver the future in hell is going to be waiting for the nonbeliever but if the people follow God rules they can be safe. Furthermore, Ralph Emerson is more life being an American means to be special from everybody else because according to his writing that say, “There is time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till” (209).In other words Emerson is trying so say that in one point of your education you going to have this gut feeling of cheating or take the easy was to success but he means that you are just cheating yourself and you don't consider yourself less that the person you cheating because you don't valorate your own skill and mental abilities to solve your own problems. Also he give some examples if you have envy of someone else you are being ignorant because you don valorate what you have and it will not let you rational think because you would think a lot of what the other people have. Therefore people have different point of view being an american; indeed the meaning of being an american can be being a nonconformist with a rational thinking mind because all the people look for their common wealth in life. Its logical that people disagree because they are free to think about they own meaning of being an American.

“Religion is the backbone of evolution.” Without the cultural differences and belief systems we would not have a regulated religious base. It is evident some religions can be both alike but yet still very different. The historical William Bradford and Jonathan Edwards demonstrate this theory. William Bradford portrays more leniencies while allowing for more religious tolerance within the puritan community. With some contrasting beliefs but familiar goals, Jonathan Edwards, pursued a stricter religious background. Both of these author’s play an important role in sculpting the puritan way of life.

To be an American means more than just living in the country for a set amount of years. It means more than being granted citizenship, and more than just waving a Boy Scout American flag in your yard on Memorial Day. To be an American is to be free, and that is what we as Americans sometimes take for granted and forget. Being an American isn 't just living in the "greatest country in the world", there are plenty of other countries that say the same exact things. There are far less countries in this world, though, that are free, and have the American mindset. Not many countries employ so many freedoms and have the 'American dream '. The American mindset is not just something that
Jonathan Edwards was a man who could petrify any eighteenth century Puritan. He was born in East Windsor, Connecticut and was raised in a household with strict religious beliefs. In 1727 he began his preaching career as an assistant to his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard, the pastor at the church at Northampton, Massachusetts. When his grandfather died two years later, Edwards became the pastor of the Church at Northampton and began preaching all over New England. He then emerged as one of the leaders of the Great Awakening with his determination to return to the orthodoxy of the Puritan faith. That is when he adopted his “fire and brimstone” emotional style of sermon. Although people often ran out of the church in hysterics, most stayed in the church captivated by his speeches. He had always purposely chose to address his congregation with a sermon, using all of the elements of an oratory. In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathan Edwards displays all elements of an oratory by appealing to emotions, including expressive and rhythmic language, addressing the needs and concerns of his audience, and inspiring others to take action.
Stephen A. Smith has a change of opinion regarding the Gred Hardy situation. In the past, he has supported the Dallas Cowboys on signing Greg Hardy, now he wants Hardy out of the NFL. Smith makes it clear that he never supported what Hardy did, but his rationale was since Hardy served his suspension somebody was going to sign him then why not the Dallas Cowboys. Machir believes that Hardy should of never been allowed back into the league in the first place, but only visual evidence should not change decisions made my organizations. He says the problem is we only live in a visual society. ESPN's hype of the Pacquiao Mayweather fight was huge for the network, despite Mayweather's long history of domestic abuse. Would it have been the same if
Different people become famous for many different reasons. Whether individuals become famous for sports, music, movies, books, or inventions, everyone who becomes famous does so for a reason. Some of these people have disabilities, but they are just as great. Deaf people are quite well known in society, as there are quite a few of them. Examples include Thomas Edison and Ludwig van Beethoven. Today, one of these people in the entertainment industry is pro NFL (National Football League) football player Derrick Coleman.
Jonathan Edwards is well known to be America’s most important early philosopher and most brilliant theologian. Here we see another individual who was highly concerned with the happenings of his time, due to his involvement in various religious and social movements. The definition of an American, is someone who is a citizen of the United States. Many African Americans, and immigrants struggled to become actual Americans in their lifetimes, because others didn 't see them as actual people; and based it on the color of someone. In today 's world people who live in America consider themselves as Americans, but to me there is certain qualities that make a person an American. To me being a true American is not based off of what Country they were born in, or what race their parents are, or even if they were immigrated to the United States. People from all over the world would say that maybe people could base this off of someone 's family heritage, or where they were before they came to America. If you were asked what makes an American an American what would you base it off of? To me there are four specific characteristics that make a person a true American; those three things would be, freedom, individuality, belief in the country, and happiness.
What is an American these ideas are fully expressed from the start as Crevecoeur states, “a modern society offers itself to his contemplation, different from what had hitherto seen.” (605), thus showing that America is a new land never seen before that is worthy of contemplation and admiration. This belief shows the idea of a better place free of old European social divides and stratification and the promise of a better place. Crevecoeur further expands on this going as far as to call America an asylum, a true place of recovery and safety, for European immigrants and their descendants. These early ideas bring forth the foundation for modern beliefs of moral superiority and thus the right for the United States to encourage and push their own ideals upon others. This supremacy is explicitly expressed by the author as seen in, “we are the most perfect society now existing in the world.” (Crevecoeur 606), and displays “James” view that America is indeed better than other cultures and should be treated as such. It is important to note however that the idea of moral superiority does not only come from a utopia of ideas and freedom, but effort, hope, and the ability to push forward in the face of
In St. Jean de Crevecoeur “What is an American?’ he defines what he feels like makes an American an American. Although I do agree with some of the things that Jean de Crevecoeur says I do not see eye to eye with all of them. He states that an American is someone that has no home land and is poor. “Everything has tended to regenerate them: new laws, a new mode of living, a new social system; here they are become men:” I do not think that this is what makes up an American because I think that individuals need to have pride in America. People need to want what's best for America, and act on that. America is a place where people come for a better life, but just being here will never make you an American.
