Lobbyist, hired by a corporation or a business to work for them. Getting paid to win over politicians in exchange for favors. A lobbyist’s job is to spin the truth.There are lobbyist that stray from the rules resulting in corruption. Jack Abramoff is an perfect example of a corrupt lobbyist that everybody loved. He was one of the most notorious lobbyist of our time, he was in the middle of a massive scandal, braze in corruption, and influence peddling. Abramoff became a master of showering gifts on lawmakers and congress left and right in exchange for votes on legislation and tax breaks in favor for his clients. “Lobbying groups would be able to finance lawmakers' travel as long as those funds were channeled through a nonprofit foundation. And almost all banned perks would still be permitted if given in the context of a campaign fundraiser(Arkush).” The watchdogs almost seem pointless if there are loopholes to allow lobbyist to continue to abuse corporation’s like Jack Abramoff did to the Indian tribes. Through loopholes lobbyist and lobbying groups are still allowed to take lawmakers on golf junkets due to their nonprofit foundation affiliations, even though travel is banned, it is acceptable because of the nonprofit foundation affiliations. Restrictions on lobbying need to be tightened even more due to the fact of the loopholes allowing lobbyist to continue to waste money on bribing lawmakers and other government officials.
To conclude Jack Abramoff was a notorious lobbyist who was sent to prison for abuse
of corrupting government officials, taxivision, and fraud. Many lobbyist today are doing a lot of the same things Abramoff did but in a legal ways due to loopholes in the proposal. The government has invested into the use of watchdogs but are they really effective hence their are so many loopholes to get around all the prohibited ideas. The United States needs to tighten lobbying restrictions to help better where all the wasted bribing money could
