Over the last decades, Canadian immigration policy has kept economic focus by bringing in mostly skilled workers or business people. For instance, in 2015 Canada welcomed 275,000 immigrants, and approximately two-third of them were economic immigrants. However, according to the latest announcement, in 2016 this focus may be shifted to non-economic immigrants: the Government of Canada is preparing to accept twice as many parent and grandparent applications and around 50,000 refugees.
Canadian economists and immigration lawyers are convinced that it is vital for the country to maintain high level of economic immigrants.
