Elon Musk CEO of Tesla says, “We are running the most dangerous experiment in history right now which is to see how much carbon dioxide the atmosphere can handle before there is an environmental catastrophe” (Woodyard). But the real reason behind such a dramatic statement is because he just wants to sell his electric cars. Now, the essential issue is which form of transportation is better, gas or electric. This issue is worth debating because electric cars are beginning to be reliable. But that doesn’t mean people should follow the hipster and buy an electric car. Car enthusiasts are constantly debating about what a good car consists of and what is best for the environment. Some people say that electric is the future because it saves money
on gas. But this is unreasonable due to the fact that people have to pay out so much money just to get the car that it would be cheaper in the end to just get a regular gas car. For an equivalent price I can get a Nissan GTR. Patrick Moore, a green peace Co-founder says, “We have no proof increased carbon dioxide is responsible for the earth’s slight warming over the past 300 years” (Moore). This shows that the claims that the people who argue in favor for electric cars, are unfounded and unrealistic. Another argument that people use is to say that electric cars are getting faster, but that still doesn’t mean that they are the better choice. The Model S which is the fastest electric car is nothing compared to the Nissan GTR. The Model S tops at a sad 155 MPH (Accelerating) meanwhile the Nissan GTR can pull off an astonishing 195 MPH. The Model S may be able to drive itself but the Nissan GTR has a certain feeling that you just don’t get from a mumbling whining battery. Then there is the matter of cost. A Model S’s initial cost is $115,400 and that is only if the buyer lives in a state that gives incentives. Meanwhile a GTR will cost you a $101,770. That is $14,000 less than Tesla’s electric car. It might seem that it is not fair to compare these two cars because most people cannot afford either one. The next comparable cars for being more affordable is the Tesla Model 3 and Subaru’s WRX STI. The initial cost to the Tesla Model 3 is $35,000 while the WRX STI is $34,695. The Model 3 offers 125 miles per (Model S) charge and the Subaru WRX STI puts up to 23/17 (hwy/city) MPG. Would you take an ION battery over a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4 cylinder boxer engine (Subaru)? In the end, the best cars in the world run on gas. They are faster than a lousy battery powered car and will cost just half an arm instead of a whole arm for the slightest details of a Tesla. Also the environmental claim that gas cars are a danger to the atmosphere are fraudulent and not backed by hard evidence.

The cost of electric cars, currently on the market, makes them an impractical purchase for the average consumer. If cost is not the growing concern in today’s economy which prevents the consumer from considering this option; they may deny the technological advance due to battery storage capabilities and the inadequate infrastructure in place to refuel and provide for them.

McKibben presents his readers with a study done by the International Panel on Climate Change, which tells them that if we continue to burn fuel at the current speed, the earth's temperature will increase four to eleven degrees before the end of the century. The results of this study should alarm SUV buyers of the damages that a fuel inefficient vehicle causes to the ozone layer. McKibben states that the damage that CO2 has caused to the ozone layer has already reduced the thickness of artic ice to 40 percent from what it was 40 years ago. He also gives the readers a startling fact that Polar Bears are unable to feed on their main food supply and the warm waters are killing coral reefs. Due to these increased temperatures, sea level is rising and in 1998 high sea levels caused the people of Bangladesh to suffer through thigh-deep waters. There were few if any electric cars available as timed moved on. Everyone believed that gas powered vehicles were more convenient than the electric powered ones. I believe that gas powered vehicles are better because gas powered cars have more function ability. The range that electric vehicles have is poor compared to gas vehicles. Electric vehicles don't function very well when the weather is cold. You'll need to charge your car pretty much every night. You are only going to be able to go 80 mph. If you go up a big hill your range goes down. electric vehicles (rather ev's) do pollute but they don't pollute the same way that gas cars pollute.

The number of miles traveled by cars has risen nearly 150 percent, yet the United States population has only grown roughly 40 percent during that time (hybridcars.com, Driving Trends). Although it may seem like we are advancing into the future, in reality, we are moving backwards from the effects these vehicles have on our bodies and the environment. The pollution produced by these vehicles has brought us to the day where we must find other modes of transportation that cause less harm to the world in which we live. Advances in technology have developed hybrid vehicles to try and slow down the amount of pollution. Driving a hybrid vehicle, instead of a conventional gas powered vehicle, can reduce the amount of pollution that affects our lives and the environment around us.
