Going to a Mars is an idea that is heavily debated in society and whether it is worth all of the government dollars to pursue a mission like this. The concept that will be explained is the idea of colonizing mars, as well as the various effects that it would bring upon humanity. This will includes issues such as Mars’ weather, how we plan on getting there, and what the cost to travel there will be. Past endeavors when it comes to space travel will also be discussed The benefits to humanity will also be discussed, and how having people on Mars may protect the human race if a global catastrophe were to occur.

It can also occur in the very near future given our current political climate today, and the nuclear power that the world has. There are many other precursors for civilization to end such as an asteroid, supernova, or global climate change. If we were to colonize Mars it would act as an insurance for if anything were to happen on Earth. Another issue that Earth has, and is becoming more of an issue is population. The worlds population had grown by 4 billion people over the course of 50 years, and is still rapidly growing. This is expending a lot of Earth natural resources and heavily affecting pollution, so sending people to Mars would be able to distribute the population that we have on Earth today. The first person and most important when it comes to Mars is Elon Musk. Elon who is the founder of SpaceX is at the forefront of this movement; predicting that we will be able to go there by 2022 and have a million inhabitants within 50 years. One of the key reasons that he states as to why we need to travel to other planets is because it is more inspiring to think of a future where we are a space bearing civilization. Some of the steps that he has already taken is launch numerous rockets that are reusable so that we can come back to Earth from Mars. He has also suggested a plan and rocket that will be able to go to Mars which is the BFR. The BFR is a vehicle capable of housing 100 people, and traveling to Mars in 3 months. It is also approximately the same size of the Saturn V rocket that was used by NASA to go to the Moon in December 1972. The BFR isn’t only being developed to go to Mars, but will also be used on Earth to get from place like London to Hong Kong, which would normally take 12 hours, in only 34 minutes. The general public being privy to information such as that will increase the demand for it heavily because they will not only look at it as a vehicle to get to Mars, but the future for international travel on our home
Starting with Mars being too dangerous. Colonists could be exposed to radiation which can result in cancer, brain damage, tumors, sickness, or death. Secondly, Mars has a lower gravity than Earth which means over time colonists would lose bone mass, have a weaker immune system, and have a weaker heart and body. Lastly, colonists would be in a closed environment for a long periods of time which could lead to mental problems according to NASA and Mars One.

This is what Elon Musk said in an interview in Fortune Magazine on December 9th 2013. The fourth planet in our solar system, Mars, is the closest “Earth-like” planet, Which is why SpaceX, NASA, and many other organizations are trying to make a human trip to Mars possible, as well as learning many things about Mars and Earth at the same time. Mars has a lot of potential to be a habitable planet to continue the human race.
The debate about space exploration has been raging on for decades, people on both sides of the issue vehemently arguing their point of view. However despite the possible risk space exploration has the potential to change humanity for the better, and doing so is well worth the risk. This essay will elaborate some of the plethora of ways that space exploration could benefit mankind.
In going along with this plan, there will be more demand for scientists and engineers alike. Engineers will build the manned bases and vessels, while scientists occupy them and gather data to benefit the world. In this way, NASA will be able to see if it is possible to make Mars the next “Earth”, making plans to help make that a reality if this does happen. “Through space exploration and innovative thinking, NASA has injected science and inspiration into our culture and projected us into the future” (Haberle).
Mars is our next best hope in life on another planet. Because of science mankind can grow and harvest plants in the modified mars soil, make a thick warm atmosphere, and drink no frozen mars water. Mankind can grow and flourish more as a species with this idea of colonizing mars. With more scientific advancements we can colonize mars and we will colonize mars.
As a country we need to start investing more money and research into space technology. Programs currently exist for this effort, but the potential for research and progress is limited by a lack of funding; compared to other government funded programs, aerospace funding is pitiful. Continued research in space technology is a necessary step in our growth and development not just as a country but also as entire human race. If we are to achieve this goal, it is necessary to increase funding for space research and technology and consider the possibility of colonizing outer space. If we limit our existence to the planet Earth, and continue to drain the resources on this planet, we will destroy the only home we have.
The Apollo 11 mission captivated the country and won the attention of the world. The successful mission provided many answers but also raised a myriad of new questions that humans had never before thought of. The triumph of achievement and intellect left the new consequences unnoticed, however it is important to discuss the ramifications of space exploration from all angles before deciding on a course of action. While curiosity and the expansion of scientific knowledge are significant factors, the ecological impacts and financial implications of space exploration are the most important factors to be considered when taking up space exploration, as they will have the largest effect on our future.

Also, in the last five years, there has been a surge in private companies who have begun building their own rockets, so they can go to space and also some companies, like virgin galactic, are trying to commercialize space travel by offering rides to space to customers. The future of space exploration holds many possibilities. For example, the idea of landing a man on mars is a very prominent goal to many people and also SpaceX has stated that, “We will put a human on mars by 2026” (Anthony, 2014) This mission is the start of the future of space exploration and will be the key factor in predicting what will happen with longer missions and if it is possible for us to live on another
Scientists have been working on space travel for decades and Mars is the most logical first step toward humans being an interplanetary species. We don't just need one nation to be selfish and spread itself to other planets no this needs to be and experience for the world. There are several reasons to go to other planets and mars is just the tip of that iceberg. Humans can expect to face some major challenges on an expedition to Mars. It has been proven that humanity can travel in space for over two years. Cumulatively, Sergei Constantinovich Krikalev, a Russian cosmonaut, has spent over eight-hundred and three days in Earth orbit (Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, 2005). The expedition to Mars would require the crew to endure a six month journey to the planet, a year of living on the planet, and a six months journey back to Earth. Russian cosmonaut, Valery V. Polyakoz, clocking in at four-hundred and thirty-eight days for just one stay in Earth orbit, shows humanity is capable of a twelve month round trip to Mars (Schwirtz, 2009). Earth's orbit has provided some benefits to space exploration, like the magnetic field from cosmic radiation, and the proximity to Earth if an emergency were to arise (Jones, 2009). The further humans travel away from Earth the greater the risks become. The major risks to human health on a flight to Mars, living on Mars, and returning to Earth are: radiation exposure, biological problems induced by weightlessness, spacecraft malfunctions, and psychological problems brought on by isolation.
There are many reasons that space exploration should continue. If Earth ever becomes too overpopulated or over polluted, then perhaps people can move to Mars. The world population in 1970 was approximately 4 billion people, and is currently nearly 6 billion people. The world population in 2015 is estimated to be 7 billion people. There is a possibility that there are useful resources on Mars. Scientists have found ice and some other clues, such as craters, volcanoes, and valleys, that have led them to believe that there was once life on Mars, and they believe that sometime in the future, should planet Earth need to be evacuated, humans will be able to live there (Jakosky 142). Many of the rocks on Mars appear to have been formed by gasses, breathable by humans and other creatures. A process called terraforming will allow astronauts to make use of the resources that are on the planet and create an atmosphere that will support life. One method for terraforming is that scientists would convert the gaseous rocks back into gasses, and use gas-eating organisms to eat the gas, which results in the formation of other gasses. If these organisms continue the cycle, then Mars would have a stable atmosphere for humans to live in (Getz 39).

The ability to rocket into space, look down on Earth, and “…explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before” (IMDB) is an adventure that people dream of experiencing. On July 20, 1969, an estimated six million people watched Neil Armstrong become the first man to walk on the Moon (Nixon Library). Presently, people are paying Virgin Galactic $250,000 to reserve a seat on a spaceship that is expected to tour suborbital space in the near future (Virgin Galactic). Although space travel continues to be of interest, there is also some controversy. Controversies include: the allocation of government resources for space exploration, government verses commercial spacecrafts, and the need to colonize other planets for the survival of humanity. The intrigue and the controversy of space travel are the reasons for this Astronomy conversation.
