There is something all of us wanted, to obtain happiness, but how? Now, my topic here is gratefulness and gratitude. Gratitude, or grateful, is the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. What is the connection between happiness and gratefulness? Well, many people would say, when you are happy, you are grateful. However, think about this again. Is it really the happy people that are grateful? We all know quite a number of people. For example greedy, avarice, and rich who have everything that it would take to be happy, and they are not happy, because they want something else or they want more of the same. According to a study from the American Psychological Association, are more well-behaved at school and more hopeful than their less-grateful peers(Huffington Post). Being grateful change the behavior of the person to be positive. More importantly, being grateful can boost the grade of a student. As a student, I know how students are stressing over their grades. "Grateful high-schoolers have higher GPAs -- as well as better social integration and satisfaction with life -- than their not-grateful counterparts, according to a 2010 study in the Journal of Happiness Studies. Researchers also found that grateful teens were less depressed or envious" (Huffington Post). Now let's return the topic back to happiness. How does gratitude linked to the happiness? Being grateful to or towards yourself also can bring happiness to others. For example, if you successfully achieved your school career with good grades and graduate college with degrees, will your parents be happy? Will the people who cared about you be happy? Conversely, if you failed you school career, it'll not only emotionally damage yourself, it'll also hurt your family. Now, let's talk about the benefits of being grateful as a person. Imagine yourself, helping a student doing a project, the student thanks you with gratitude and respects. Will you be happy? Now, imagine yourself again, helping the same student, but the student didn't show any sign of gratitude and think you're helping them because you wanted to get something from him. How would you feel, and how would you feel towards the student? According to a 2003 study in the "Journal of Personality and Social Psychology", gratitude could also boost pro-social behaviors, such as helping other people who have problems or lending emotional support to another person( Huffington Post). You've change to a person with gratitude. People will wanted to be friend with you, not you wanted to be friend with them. It creates a charm that attract people. Being grateful also can affect you physically. It is linked to your health. It may sound odd, but people who is thankful throughout their day tend to sleep better. Psychology researchers found that when people spent 15 minutes jotting down what they're grateful for in a journal before bedtime, they fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer (Huffington Post). Since being grateful is linked to emotions, it is also beneficial to the health of your heart. "A 1995 study in the American Journal of Cardiology showed that appreciation and positive emotions are linked with changes in heart rate variability. This may be beneficial in the treatment of hypertension and in reducing the likelihood of sudden death in patients with congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease." (Huffington Post). Can we be grateful for everything?
Certainly not. We cannot be grateful for violence, war, oppression, or exploitation. On the personal level, we cannot be grateful for the loss of a friend, for unfaithfulness, for bereavement. But I didn't say we can be grateful for everything. I meant that we can be grateful in every given moment for the opportunity. We can be grateful for having shelter, education, and food. We can also be grateful for being alive. There are so many more opportunities to be grateful we just don't notice. Gratitude can change our world in immensely important ways. If you're grateful, you're not fearful, and if you're not fearful, you're not violent. If you're grateful, you act out of a sense of enough or satisfy and not of a sense of scarcity. If you are grateful, you are enjoying the differences between people, and you are respectful to everybody, and that changes this power pyramid under which we live.(Steindl-Rast, TED.). If we're all grateful, the world will be a living heaven. All world where everyone is happy full with gratitude. There will be no violence, no war, and no depression. A world that's peaceful and full of happiness to show for our next
generation.
There is a old time saying that “you will never know what true happiness feels like until you have felt pain”. In order to reach where you are going in life you have to go through hardship and pain to find your inner contentment. Often times,people who have too much in life always takes it for granted ,because all they have is pleasure and not knowing the feelings of pain and being without. Martha C. Nussbaum author of “who is the happy warrior” states that you have to go through pain to find the true meaning of happiness while Daniel M.Haybron author of “Happiness and Its Discontents” states that pain doesn 't bring happiness,happiness is just a thing you feel when you think you may have enough. To find happiness you have to go through the unbearable process of life.
This is seemingly the case in the time period prior to the collapse of society. For example, when a character named “[Jeevan] reached Allan Gardens Park… he found himself blindsided by an unexpected joy. Arthur died… there’s nothing to be happy about. But there was… now he was certain, absolutely certain that he wanted to be a paramedic” (11). When Jeevan finally realized what he wanted to be, his true calling, he was overwhelmed with joy. Even though somebody had just died, all he could feel was happiness because he found something within himself. When Arthur was beginning to reflect upon his life, “He stared at his crown and ran through a secret list of everything that was good… Dancing with Clark when he was eighteen… Tanya sipping wine, her smile… Riding in his father’s snowplow when he was nine, the time [he] told a joke and his father and his little brother couldn’t stop laughing, the sheer joy he’d felt at that moment” (327). All of these different things brought Arthur happiness and eventually sadness at some point in his life, showing that nothing can keep you happy forever. The meaning of happiness is ever-changing. Common curtesy has us saying “Thanks” to the point that we may have lost the intentions associated with the response. W.S. Merwin sums up this anomaly in his poem “Thanks”, saying “with nobody listening we are saying thank you” (Merwin 29). We say thanks for so many meaningless things that it no longer carry’s the true intent of the speaker. Instead it is a response to acknowledge the receiver rather than giving true thanks. This repetition allows for questions regarding what are we truly thankful for, and how we make this known to the receiver. Carl Dennis, in his poem, “Thanksgiving Letter From Harry”, struggles with this question. Not seeing himself thankful for all the negative atrocities around him, he tries to find something he can stand up and be thankful for with limited success, “I’m, thankful today I don’t reside in a country/My country has chosen to liberate” (Dennis 2-3). Generic overuse of such a simple, but meaningful word, has made saying “thanks” somewhat mundane, making it harder to express their gratitude to the receiver seamlessly.
Happiness has always been a desirable goal throughout our lives, but each actions we take might just affect the happiness of others. When humans seek happiness, we always seek for things that make us feel alive, or things that brings us the greatest comfort. Our contentment comes with the act of selfishness since we choose to prioritize our happiness above all other. We willingly classify happiness in two different types of meaning, both physical and mental happiness. People ought not be in title to happiness because it is classified in general as a physical desire by many people. Contentment is always known to be a physical satisfaction in life instead of a self-inducing satisfaction for life.

In the world there are many possibilities, and everyone wants something different in their life. Some people just want happiness other want so much more. This is a lot to take in so here it goes. Why do some people want more than just happiness? My reasoning is that i think that they are greedy but then again that's just me. Because maybe to someone else i'm that person. I don’t know what most people in the same room as me want to make of their life, i barely know what i want to make of my own. No one expects so much happiness to come from a little object they always look at the bigger picture which leads me into why I think people are so greedy. Happiness is a feeling that humans naturally desire. Without it, one feels incomplete. In this generation, happiness has taken on a definition by how we are presented to one another. It is measured by how much money we have, how famous we are, or the things we possess. When in reality, none of these things guarantee a happy life. Happiness, what is it, and why do we strive to achieve it so persistently? Happiness in some points of view is portrayed as the state that is derived from self-awareness of a benefiting action or moment taking place. What of the moments that are not beneficial? Can a person still find moments of happiness and success in discord, a little glimmer of light shining from the deep recesses of our own consciousness? Plucking it from a mere moment, achieved from money, or is it so much more, happiness is the precipice that all strive to gain to better perceive their success. As a person lives, they are in a constant struggle to be happy. For instance, even the United States Constitution makes reference to the idea that every person has the inalienable right to pursue happiness. This was the resulting outcome of the enlightenment from France, spilling out into the rest of the world from 1650 through 1800. This revolutionized the idea that every single person has the inalienable right to happiness or in different views the right to succeed. As to how one peruses or conjures their happiness that is an entirely different concept and completely up to their preferred preference, but it is something that a person needs to find on their own for true success.
