There are those who content that advertisements in schools can be a unprecedented way for schools to raise their funds, their detractors, however, argue that the it can be detrimental to children as captive audiences. To my way of thinking, I agree with the latter contention profoundly. There is a plethora of reasons, as far as I am concerned, why the formal argument does not hold water. Perhaps chief among these is the fact that advertising in schools defeats the very purpose of schools as educational institutions. Public schools should be funded by the local government instead of corporate sponsors. As well as this, advertisements can negatively affect children’s academic performance by distracting them from the various ways, such as misleading
youth to buy things that are not necessary and such like.
George Parker once said, “The only people who care about advertising are the people who work in advertising." Advertisers use many different techniques that target children and teens. Many people do not realize how harmful this can turn out to be. Advertising plays a harmful role in the lives of youth because it poses health risks, prevents children and teens from saving money, and exposes them to way too many ads.
By giving form to people’s deep lying desires, and picturing states of being that individuals privately yearn for, advertisers have best chance to arresting attentions and affecting communication. Advertising is designed to foster a desire to purchase goods and services, yet it is much deeper than that—advertising is a system of effective manipulation that twists the mentalities of those subjected to it. Schools should provide an environment free of corporate influence because corporations setting the curriculum lead to biased teachings full of false information that corporations use to benefit themselves, but not the students. Textbooks that these corporations provide to students contain false, incorrect information and are added to these textbooks in order to make these corporations seem better. In Fast Food Nation, Schlosser states that “The spiraling cost of textbooks has led to thousands of American school districts using corporate sponsored teaching materials. A 1998 study of these teaching materials by the Consumers Union found that 80 percent were biased, proving students had incomplete or slanted information that favored the sponsor’s products and views.
This letter is regarding a controversial topic that I’ve researched – Advertising on School Grounds. With all the cuts that school districts have faced over the last five years, I am a proponent for advertising on schools grounds and argue that our district would benefit from implementing different advertising in our district to help fund dying programs. Across America in homes, schools, and businesses, sits advertisers' mass marketing tool, the television, usurping freedoms from children and their parents and changing American culture. Virtually an entire nation has surrendered itself wholesale to a medium for selling. Advertisers, within the constraints of the law, use their thirty-second commercials to target America's youth to be the decision-makers, convincing their parents to buy the advertised toys, foods, drinks, clothes, and other products. Inherent in this targeting, especially of the very young, are the advertisers; fostering the youth's loyalty to brands, creating among the children a loss of individuality and self-sufficiency, denying them the ability to explore and create but instead often encouraging poor health habits. The children demanding advertiser's products are influencing economic hardships in many families today. These children, targeted by advertisers, are so vulnerable to trickery, are so mentally and emotionally unable to understand reality because they lack the cognitive reasoning skills needed to be skeptical of advertisements. Children spend thousands of hours captivated by various advertising tactics and do not understand their subtleties.

The findings in Dittman’s article fully support my findings as well as my own personal. beliefs that advertising to children is unethical because a lot of the children watching the TV are doing so without adult supervision. I believe that advertising is a modern example of brainwashing and that with no parental supervision or no parental limits, our nation’s youth will be so caught up in the power of advertising, that their youth and innocence will end much faster than the generation before.
