Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States, and was best known for abolishing slavery. He stated many great speeches like, the Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg address, and Cooper Union address. Abraham Lincoln’s assassination was unjustified because even though he didn’t think blacks were 100% equal he wanted blacks to have freedom, he made the Emancipation Proclamation, and passed the Kansas Nebraska act.
There were many cons about Lincoln that no one talks about. He argued that the founding fathers’ phrase, “All men are created equal” involved the physical being of blacks and whites, however he believed they should not have the same social and political rights. The war to preserve the Union became the war to create freedom. “One section of our country believes slavery is right and ought to be extended, while the other believes it is wrong and ought to not be extended,” (Von Drehle 60) The civil war lasted 4 years, at the end of it all the Confederates surrendered to the Union. As a result the Confederate states were forced to free millions of their slaves. They were not happy about this and were mad at the Union and Lincoln that not only their slaves were gone but their towns were wrecked. Abraham Lincoln states, “the war will be prosecuted for the object of practically restoring the constitutional relation between the United States, and each of the States, and the people thereof, in which States that relation is, or may be, suspended or disturbed.” (Lincoln) This means that by ending slavery for all, the United States will be at peace again and serve as one Union. Lincoln was trying to help America be at peace again.
“Under the terms of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, two new territories—Kansas and Nebraska—would be allowed into the Union and each territory’s citizens would be given the power to determine whether slavery would be allowed within the territory’s borders.” (“Lincoln speaks out”) Lincoln did not believe in slavery he thought it was inhumane.
