1. What is propaganda and how is it connected to characterisation?
Propaganda is the act of spreading certain ideas or opinions with the intention of persuading someone to recognise their point of view. Propaganda is usually done with the purpose of inflicting damage to a particular party or person in order to promote a specific ideal. Propaganda is a form of persuasion and is commonly done through media. One way propaganda is often portrayed through characters. A character can be depicted in a certain way purposely to entice certain feelings from the audience. In Animal Farm Napoleon is portrayed as a selfish, deceitful and malicious animal which creates a sense of sympathy in the audience for the other animals

While the pigs are selfish, self-centred and tyrannical the other animals as seen as hard working, responsible and selfless and this creates a sense of sympathy for their situation. Other ways a film can create sympathy is through music, sound and animation. The facial features of the animals plays a big part in how we perceive them. Napoleons facial features for instance are sharp and angular and give off an angry feel. The reason the director created sympathy for his characters is it allows the audience to separate clearly the antagonist and protagonist. When we side with the other animals we can see the story from the author’s perspective. It also connects back to the Russian revolution on which the story was based loosely off of. The animals in animal farm are based off of major characters in the Russian revolution and by creating sympathy for the animals of animal farm the author is also connecting it back to the current social event of his …show more content…
He asked for the opinions of the other animals and seeked only to better them mentally, physically and intellectually. While snowball is altruistic in nature Napoleon is tyrannical and selfish. He used violence, and lies to get his own way. He voices his propaganda through Squealer his right hand man and bends the truth to fit his own selfish desires. He waited for the death of snowball because he wanted absolute control over the animals on animal farm and he couldn’t have that with Snowball around to empower the other animals. He needed to tarnish snowballs reputation in order to gain control over animal
Propaganda is information that is biased to promote one point of view. Propaganda is mostly used during political campaigns. It is one of the most widely used and effective political tactics. It gives its user the opportunity to move people to action in both positive and negative ways, by either bringing fame or shame to a selected person or idea. Propaganda is used to sell a candidate or a belief to the public, by ruining the opponent’s chances of winning, or by falsely advertising an idea of their own as better than one of their opponents.
The first type of propaganda is stereotypes. Stereotypes is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified or idea of a particular type of person or thing. A excellent example of how it is used I the play is how Goody Osborne is accused of being a witch just because she is poor. In act one Tetuba was accused of being a witch and when she realized that she was not going to change Parris’s mind, she accused two people that did not have a lot of money or friends. Those two were Goody Good and Goody Osborne, and Parris believed her because he assumed that it was truth just because they were poor. Another example of stereotyping is how women don’t really have jobs they just do house work and really only talk to

Propaganda is used to gain the support of its viewers on an issue by either false or misleading information.
The theme of propaganda comes up in a part of the story when the pigs say “You have heard then, comrades, ‘that we pigs now sleep in the beds of the farmhouse? The pigs justify sleeping in beds by saying that they removed the sheets so it does not make it a bed. The theme of propaganda rises again when squealer has to justify to the animals that the pigs should keep the apples and milk for themselves because they are the more intelligent ones of the farm and need to stay healthy which the animals then accept. Propaganda is shown again when boxer is taken away to the “knackers” to be turned into glue which the animals are not aware of and think that he has been taken to hospital for treatment. Squealer then goes on to tell them that he was taken to the hospital by the vet for treatment but unfortunately died there. Squealer tells the animals that he was there when he passed and that his last words were “long live animal farm” which was not true and never even happened because he wasn’t taken to hospital, he was taken to the knackers to be turned into glue. When the animals questioned why it said “horse mortuary” on the side of the van squealer told them that the vet had bought the van off the knackers and had not been rebranded
It only takes a bit of doubt to make someone consider even the most horrible acts. Eric Hoffer once said, “Propaganda does not deceive people; it merely helps them to deceive themselves.” In other words, it is a misconception that propaganda convinces people to follow a certain ideology; propaganda only gets them thinking and leads them to make up their own conclusions. This is true because people are subject to many forms of propaganda in their lives, however most people are able to decide what they choose to do with it. What does the word propaganda really mean? For most of us we assume that it is a word for negativity use. Just to assure those that think of propaganda as a negative word. Propaganda does have a positive objective if used correctly. The word propaganda is defined in a few different ways, But in the most general usage, it varies from bad to good persuasion of our minds. It is used during election time to our daily lives on television to our newspaper stands. According to Donna Cross’s essay, “Propaganda: How Not to Be Bamboozled,” there are thirteen different types of propaganda; this paper will discuss six varieties. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney used primarily every sort of propaganda to influence the citizens; therefore, our national society needs to develop awareness in the propaganda used by such politicians so that they can make wise decisions intelligently.

The uneducated are often unaware of how people take advantage of them when under the power of a leader using propaganda. Propaganda is an opinionated advertisement used to control and appeal to people's judgement and emotions, and gets them to do what they want (Stults). Not all persuasion is propaganda, and not all propaganda is bad (Stults). George Orwell writes Animal Farm as an allegorical fable associated with Lenin’s lead over the revolution that established the Communist control of Russia. After the animals of Animal Farm are successful with the Rebellion against Jones, they to lose sight of how the pigs are slowly influencing them. Like the use of propaganda in Russia, the pigs on Animal Farm are able to manipulate the other animals using simplicity and repetition, distortion and bad logic, and fear.
Snowball is a “vivacious pig… quicker in speech and more inventive, but was not considered to have the same depth of character” (Orwell, 13). Snowball is a brilliant speaker who “won over the majority by his brilliant speeches” (43). Snowball is lively and friendly, and truly believes that all animals are equal. He believes in Animalism, where all animals shared equal labor and the fruits of their labor.
Propaganda is a type of information reflecting the views and interests of a government or political party. It is used to make people agree with them. Propaganda emphasizes just one part of a situation, and exaggerates some thoughts, beliefs, etc. from time to time. Thus, propaganda is politicians’ favourite tool to advocate their personal thoughts or standpoint.

What's worse, Napoleon came to constantly use Snowball to shift the blame on every small mishap on the farm. For example, when the windmill was first destroyed by the tornado, Napoleon blamed it on Snowball. Also, Snowball was blame for destroying farm property, mixing foods with weeds, and secretly conspiring with human, which was strictly prohibited by animal law. However, the accusations were never proven true, as Snowball was never heard from again since his expulsion.
Pigs walking on two feet, horses and sheep talking. This is how George Orwell satirizes human nature in his classic novel Animal Farm. Animal Farm is an allegory of the Russian Revolution of 1917. The title of the book is also the setting for the action in the novel. The animals in the story decide to have a revolution and take control of the farm from the humans. Soon the story shows us how certain groups move from the original ideals of the revolution to a situation where there is domination by one group and submission by all the others. The major idea in this story is the political corruption of what was once a pure political ideal. Orwell uses satire to ridicule human traits in his characters such as Napoleon and Squealer. There are several different characters in the novel utilizing animals as symbols of people in real life during the Russian Revolution. Napoleon is the leader of the pigs that ultimately come to dominate the farm. The characteristics that we associate with pigs , lazy, greedy, and pushy are meant to symbolize the characteristics that the leaders of the Russian Revolution exhibited. Napoleon is admired by all of the animals because he is their leader. All of the animals believe that their leader wants to fulfill all of their needs. They also are convinced that Napoleon’s decisions are made the best interest of the animals. Napoleon’s piglike qualities are shown throughout the story. He exhibited greediness when he sold the dying horse, Boxer to a slaughterhouse for money so that he and the other pigs could purchase whiskey. Orwell ridicules human nature through Napoleon in the sense that he is trying to show how the greedy and power hungry eventually end in corruption.
