Recommended: Effects of propaganda in politics
Propaganda is biased information used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. Many people and advertisements use propaganda as a use of persuasion to influence the audience to take their side. There a few types of propaganda such as band wagon, fear, repetition, name-calling, glittering generalities, and plain folks. A few of these types of propaganda were used to influence audiences in Animal Farm, the Russian Revolution. In today’s world it may be strange to suggest that the study of propaganda has anything to do with contemporary politics. When most people think of propaganda they think of the campaigns of Hitler and Stalin in the 1930’s. Since there are not many campaigns today that can be compared to these, many people believe that propaganda is no longer a problem. The persuasive techniques of propaganda are usually used by politicians, advertisers, and journalists who like to influence human behavior. Uses of propaganda can be used to accomplish campaigns to reduce drunk driving, laws against bearing arms, and other things. They are also used to...
Propaganda is information that is biased to promote one point of view. Propaganda is mostly used during political campaigns. It is one of the most widely used and effective political tactics. It gives its user the opportunity to move people to action in both positive and negative ways, by either bringing fame or shame to a selected person or idea. Propaganda is used to sell a candidate or a belief to the public, by ruining the opponent’s chances of winning, or by falsely advertising an idea of their own as better than one of their opponents.

When a person sees a new advertisement or commercial for their favorite shoe company, they immediately want to go and check out their latest designs. Similarly, propaganda uses different sources of media to encourage people to buy a certain item that will benefit their country or an organization. Propaganda was used in World War II to encourage citizens to buy certain tools or participate in certain events to help the soldiers fighting. Both video and radio advertisements were used by the Allied and Axis powers to encourage citizens to aid the war effort, resulting in a rise of nationalism and resentment towards opposing sides.
"Propaganda consists of the planned use of any form of public or mass-produced communication designed to affect the minds and emotions of a given group for a specific purpose, whether military, economic, or political" (Levinson). Propaganda is used to gain the support of its viewers on an issue by either false or misleading information.
To persuade one is a challenge in itself, but to sway the minds of everyone is something unfathomable. The infection of ideals was one of many tools used during World War II. The methods differ for propaganda but they share the same purpose, to saturate your view with anomalous thoughts. By reading In the Garden of Beasts, we can deduce that propaganda played a huge role during World War II. It prolonged the United States intervention of the war and allowed Hitler to prolong his exposure of his master plan, genocide of millions. “The art of propaganda consists precisely in being able to awaken the imagination of the public through an appeal to their feelings, in finding the appropriate psychological form that will arrest the attention and appeal to the hearts of the national masses.” (Hitler, p. Chapter 5). Propaganda does more than just affect the minds of its own people; it alters the perception of the world.
Propaganda plays a role in persuading people into thinking a certain way or encouraging the viewer to purchase an item, take action, or follow an ideology. The advertiser achieves in influencing viewers through their tone, choice of words or lack of where instead a powerful image is used. The MTA advertisement “New Yorkers Keep New York Safe”, released on March 2016, shows how propaganda influences commuters to combat terrorism by ‘saying something’.
Propaganda has been here for a long time and we weren’t the first to use it, for example Adolf Hitler used propaganda to convince the Germans that the Jews were to blame and that getting rid of them would make everything better. The beginning of Propaganda in the United States was in World War I. Propaganda in World War I was used to persuade people to get into the Army, such as the “I want you” poster with Uncle Sam. Propaganda was then used in the 1920’s for advertising all the new things that came out such as TV’s, Automobiles, and appliances.
I believe that the most effective propaganda technique used in animal farm is glittering generalities. The reason for this is that they use certain words and phrases to get the animals to do what they want them to do. This is shown in the story when the animals discovered that the pigs were taking the milk and mixing it in with their mash. Squealer tells the animals in response, “It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back” (52). This is an example of glittering generalities because Squealer uses phrases like your sake, and failed our duty. These words stir the emotions of the animals, and the pigs don’t have to go into specifics or use

Propaganda is a multifaceted term that’s unfortunately been given negative connotations. It is an ancient idea that has existed since ancient times. Propaganda is used in wartime in order to garner support for the military and demoralize enemy troops. In times of peace propaganda is used to shape public opinion in many various ways, by dictators in order to stop revolts and keep power, and even in democracy in order to create cultural revolutions. Propaganda is not solely a tool for oppressing the public, starting revolts, or even supporting the public, it is simply a set of tools that is used to propagate and spread ideas throughout the population.
