Make America great again, President Donald Trump preached to the American citizens as he ran for president in 2016. All people have seen propaganda in some form trying to turn and manipulate minds to vote for jobs like a president, sheriff, or even just a high school student for homecoming queen. In politics propaganda is used more than ever trying to push thoughts on to citizens about a certain party or candidate. Politicians will even link their phrases, and advertisements to common interest of different groups to get a widespread variety hoping that it will bring more people to follow and believe in the work they plan to do. In 1984 Walter Mondale a former vice president used the propaganda strategy testimonial/endorsements to draw certain groups like retirees, united paperworkers and Asian American to vote for him. (document A) The endorsement is used to show the support for someone whether it is a famous endorsement, or a group of people. When the voters see that a candidate is liked by a certain group that they are associated with, or know is high up in status it gives off a positive vibe to others who are not sure about the candidate that is running. Mondale used endorsement when he said “retirees support Mondale-Ferraro” retirees are elderly people who have lived through a lot and have a good understanding of what is needed in a good leader or vice president, and having them behind the candidate gives off to the younger folks that the candidate has a good head on their shoulders. Eisenhower had an ad called “Eisenhower Answers America” in the ad a woman talks about how everything nowadays is high priced and that it driving her “crazy.” General Eisenhower comes back at the women saying “ my mamie gets after me about the high cost of living. It’s another reason why I say it’s time for a change”(document C) he uses this ad to make him come off as just a plain folk and that he has everyone’s best interest at heart. Using the plain folk method it makes the littlest person have something in common with the candidate which makes them have more of a truth to them and help get citizens on their side. On the other side using the plain folk strategy could tear the other candidate down like Adlai stevenson did with his “I Love the Guv” ad. The song reads “I’d rather have a man with a hole in his shoe than a hole in everything he says. I’d rather have a man who knows what to do when he get’s to be prez.” (document C) Adlai is saying that he is an average man who has worn out a pair of shoes and has a hole in his own shoe and that it is better for him an average hard working man to be president than Eisenhower who he is running against a man whose word is nothing but talk without a meaning. In 1992, President Bill Clinton was a little known former governor from the poor state of Arkansas who thwarted President George H.W. Bush’s effort to be reelected and became the 42nd president of the United States. During the primary and general election, President Clinton’s campaign made extensive use of television to introduce himself and his ideas to the general public. Three examples were chosen as representative of the type of imagery seen during campaign. The first is a TV ad called “Hope”, the next is a picture from President’s appearance on the Arsenio Hall TV show and the last is a TV ad called “1988.” These examples serve to represent key moments that occurred during the presidential campaign.
Propaganda is usually associated with brainwashing and manipulation, however it is justifiable when it is used to promote safety and health. For example, in public service announcements to warn the citizens of hazards and to promote safety to protect the people from the dreadful habits of the modern world. Appealing to an audience’s ethos consists of convincing an audience that someone has moral character and are credible enough to be knowledgeable on what they are speaking on. Bernie is able to play up his ethos through the use of multiple rhetorical strategies, including narrative structure and plain folks. Directly from the start of this political ad Bernie incorporates narrative structure to list all of his qualifications that would make him an effective leader for the United States. The ad informs the audience on how “he moved to Vermont; won the election and praise as one of America’s best mayors” in 1987, decided by U.S. News (Bernie Sanders). The ad tells a chronological story of the highlights in Bernie Sander’s career. This list of accomplishments impresses his audience while also demonstrating that Bernie has the political expertise to be a successful president while also fighting for the people. In the narrative structure of the ad, Bernie’s time spent fighting for racial and social justice is a major topic where emphasis is placed. Knowing Bernie’s audience is inclusive of racial and ethnic minorities, these examples of Bernie’s fighting against injustice will give him mass amounts of credibility with his audience. Another rhetorical strategy used to appeal to the audience’s ethos is plain folks. The ad specifically states that Bernie went to public school, this is for the sole purpose of relating Bernie Sanders to the average American, he could not afford expensive private schools, contrary to other candidates. They also show clips of Bernie talking to multiple working class citizens and mention how he is a husband, father, and grandfather. Posters were used based on their appeal: they were colorful, creative, concise, and mentally stimulating. Posters often portrayed the artist's views on the war. They demonstrated the artist concern for the war, their hopes for the war, and reflected the way enemies were envisioned. Posters also show a nations political status: they reflect a nations allies and enemies, how the nation saw itself, and its greatest hopes and fears of the war.

Similarly, propaganda uses different sources of media to encourage people to buy a certain item that will benefit their country or an organization.
