“Propaganda”, what does one think of when approached with this term? Would one think it was of a negative or positive implication? What about the connection it had with the holocaust, would it then be considered negative? Did the Nazis use the role of propaganda? Propaganda played an extremely large role in the Nazi’s rise in power, the brainwashing of the Germans to detestation and ultimately killing the Jews. The power of influence and how it was used through various forms of media to gain a stronger anti-Semitic than they had already had. The anti-Semitism that was already apparent, the Germans naturally despised Jews. But how did it become so out of control that approximately 6 million Jews died had to pay the consequences. According to Kevin Reilly’s psychology behind genocide three out the six elements can be applied to the holocaust. Rationalizing, or good reasons for doing something, Hitler convinced several Germans to hate Jews. His arguments included the Jews taking over their jobs, the assassination of one famous German, and for them causing the great depression. Germany was suffering from the after-effects of the depression in the 1930s. Unemployment was high. Hitler capitalized on this. In his speeches, he promised hope and the dawn of an era of prosperity for Germany. Hitler was a brilliant orator. His speeches captivated many. He harped on restoring German self-respect, which had taken a severe beating in WW1. Another element is Scrapegoating, Hitler put all the blame on the Jews and for everything bad that was going in German’s society. The senseless massacre of millions upon millions of innocent people all started by a man named Adolf Hitler who came to power in 1933. The Nazis brought terrible fatalities and chaos in Europe beginning with a purified race and ending with the Final Solution in a maniacal plot to exterminate Jews. The holocaust is a awful incident that should have never happened in the first place, but I believe that this made me more aware of the fundamental causes and vast implications involved in how a genocide can occur. I also learned how this changed the future I live in today. I believe that the holocaust still plays an important role in current times, history contributes to moral understanding, and it helps us understand people and societies, and makes an impact in our own lives as well. Examples of this would be how tactical we start and finish wars, if we let propaganda get to us, or how we don’t let just one person reign. By studying the past and different societies in the past, a broad viewpoint can help us change and improve the future. This moment in history is much better than before more rights and freedoms, better technology, and more education to help prevent any future genocide. From the holocaust people can learn not to do this again. The world would be a better place if all races and creeds developed tolerance and respect for each other - but all sides have to make the effort. Hitler’s perfect
