Prometheus Religion

In Greek mythology, Zeus cursed Prometheus with an eternity spent chained to a rock while an eagle ate his liver. This torment was repeated daily and was inflicted on Prometheus because he created humans and stole fire from the gods so he could give it to his creation (Hunt). It is with this Greek figure that the movie I chose to review for the final paper shares its name. The film Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott, was released on June 8, 2012. In this essay, I will explore the relationship between science and religion, the multiple references to mythology, and examine the themes of sacrifice, creation and destruction. In order to analyze the relationship that science has to religion in Prometheus, I will be focusing on the character of Elizabeth Shaw, who provides the strongest connection to both science and religion in the movie. When I look at the themes that can be found throughout Prometheus, I am going to look at the Engineer as well as the captain and pilots of the ship.

Most of the music in Prometheus is instrumental. However, Janek is humming a Christmas song as he decorates a small Christmas tree and, later in the movie, he sings a few lines from Stephen Stills’ 1970 song “Love the One You’re With”. There is also a brief scene in the beginning that does not have any sound. Immediately after the opening credits, the Prometheus is shown moving in space. During this scene, there is no music or any other kind of sound. This is fitting because there is no sound in space. For the instrumental music, the composer, Marc Streitenfeld, said in an interview that he “wrote out the sheet music backwards so the orchestra played it backwards and then digitally flipped it. So...the score [has] the same melody, but with a backwards sounding orchestra which gives it a kind of unusual, unsettling sound”
