Progressivism: Impact on American Social Aspects

Progressivism improved American Economics and Government drastically but, progressivism has had the biggest impact on the American Social aspect. Progressivism has had the biggest impact due to its improved the health and sanitation of cities, its creation women's suffrage and its better working conditions.
Progressivism helped the health and sanitation of cities. The first site of this was the Meat Inspection Act of 1906. This was a system of government inspection for meat products. Inspectors graded the meat by its quality. The government did this because there wa hazards surround the meet. The meat was kept on the floor for rats and was spit on and not taken care of which led to many illnesses and deaths in the United States. Another way

it helped the sanitation of cities was to clean the cities streets by sweeping, creating sewer systems and not dumping poop into the streets. The progressives had to do this because if they did not disease would continue to spread rapidly. Diseases such as tuberculosis, cholera,and yellow fever would spread throughout the cities. The final biggest way progressives helped Sanitation and health is that they stopped and helped the immigrants who were living in crowded, filthy, crime infested neighborhoods. This was necessary because the crime rate was drastically increasing in the neighborhoods, resulting in death. They had to stop the view of bad neighborhoods and increase the health of immigrants.
Progressivism helped women's suffrage by giving women a chance. There has been no other time in history before the progressivism had ever made woman want to vote. This belief helped the NAWSA, also known as the National American Woman's Suffrage Association, convince one state at a time to let women vote. Alice Paul did not agree with this method and took it straight to Washington Dc. She soon created her own organization called NWP known as the National Woman's party. At the beginning of women’s suffrage, nearly every senator and American man disagreed with the cause because they believed that women were needed at home for the children. After seeing the women’s fight, they would not give up the 19th amendment which was added to the constitution stating that woman had the right to vote. This happened because progressivism gave woman the confidence to stand up for themselves and make a change to their lives.
The working conditions of people in America were bad, if not spiteful.

An example of these horrible working conditions would be in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. 146 people were killed because there was no fire escapes and the managers chained the doors shut to prevent anyone from leaving during work. Besides the fact of the horrible working conditions, most Americans were only making 500$ a year, while they were working 10 hours or more a day 7 days a week. The working conditions often made people sick and a lot of times would end up with death. By 1900 industrial accidents killed thirty-five thousand workers each year and maimed five hundred thousand others, and the numbers continued to rise. Child labor was also on the rise as 1.7 million people were working in factories by 1900. Progressivists changed this by implementing child labor laws, higher minimum wages, lowering work hours and improving working conditions. This was necessary because to many workers were dying, in poverty or just being worn down.
The progressive era changed many aspects in the political and economic world but nothing could compare to the beneficial changes to the social world it made. The Progressive era strides to make work conditions better, to make the united states a cleaner place, and giving more people the rights they need by putting specific acts and regulations into place.
