The Progressive Movement was an exertion to cure many of the troubles of American society that had established during the great spurt of industrial growth in the last quarter of the 19th century. The frontier had been controlled, great cities and businesses developed, and an overseas territory established, but not everyone shared in the new prosperity, respect, and hopefulness. Efforts to improve humanity were not new to the United States in the late 1800s. A push for change came, the First Reform, happened before the Civil War. It included efforts of social advances, improvements of working conditions, and improvement of the way people treated during that time. The important point of the initial reform period was abolitionism. Many people in society wanted to remove slavery because it was wrong in their eyes. The next reform era instigated during Reconstruction and continued until the American entry into World War I. The fight for women`s rights and the temperance movement were the first matters addressed. Women wanted the right to be able to things, such as voting. A farm movement arose to reimburse for the declining rank of rural areas in a progressively urbanized America. Cities were taking over land, because so many people were moving there. Everyone’s jobs were there, so they wanted to be close by. So farming was decreasing, but still around because people relied on the crops for goods and food. Many of the clothes were made out of cotton in the factories in the big cities. Theodore Roosevelt was our 26th president of the United States and an advocate of the "New Nationalist"
In the beginning of the twentieth century, the economy was booming, new technology flourished. The rapid industrialization brought achievement to the United States, however, it also caused several social problems. Wealth and power were concentrated in the hands of a few, and poverty and political corruption were widespread. As people became aware of these problems, a new reform group was created. Unlike populism, which had been a group of farmers grown desperate as the economy submerged into depression, the new reform movement arose from the educated middle class. These people were known as the progressives. The Progressive Movement was a movement that aimed at solving political, economic, and social problems. The Progressives were people from the middle class who had confidence that they could achieve social progress through political reform. The Progressives sought after changes and improvements in the society through laws and other federal actions.
After looking closely at all four documents, the Progressive Era ended child labor, improved working conditions, and brought victory to women suffrage. Goals of the movement and people who took part in it have also been highlighted. It is concluded that Progressivism movement was effective and changing American values and lifestyles.
Reform provides permanent programs to avoid another depression and to protect citizens against an economic disaster. The Progressive Movement which targeted urban complications, there was a massive disparity between the wealthy and the poor and the goal was to bring equality into the nation. The movement aimed towards removing corruption and including American citizens into the political process. Additionally, to encourage the government to solve the social issues that were occurring in the late 1800’s and early 20th century, all while balancing impartial treatment into the economic matters.
Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, former presidents of the United States in the early 1900s, have impacted America deeply with their domestic policies. These two presidents had some similar views; however, the vision that these two presidents had were executed differently. Theodore Roosevelt, a progressive and conservationist, believed in creating a powerful nation and assisting the employees in businesses. Woodrow Wilson, a progressive and idealist, believed in trying to make the world a peaceful place. After Roosevelt’s term, William Howard Taft was president for one term. After that term in the Election of 1912, the Republican party split into the Progressive party and the Republican Party due to both, Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft respectively, wanting to run for office. Due to this party split, the Republicans lost the election to the Democrats (Doc E). This led to Woodrow Wilson winning the Election of 1912. These men had great aspirations for their nation, and their domestic policies on Progressive reform helped affect the government’s role in American lives.
Women’s suffrage groups like this one sought to give women a political voice of representation, such that they might eventually be recognized as full-fledged citizens, thereby earning the right to vote. Each group had their own reasons for wanting such rights, but basically, they all wanted to give women the legal ability to defend their own best interests. During the Progressive Era, occurring from 1890 until 1920, progressives attempted to make many changes at a national level and were characterized by support for economic, social, and political reforms. By realizing the rapid industrial growth, poor class, and immigration, progressive’s goals were to relieve these issues and create laws that gave the common people more power. Progressive reformers gave significance to issues of black rights and also to women suffrage, however these issues had proved to be forgotten by Woodrow Wilson, whom of which was the president during this time. Although the reformers were not successful with these two issues, they seemed to be successful in improving much of the other negativity that had occurred during this era including the working conditions of the meat industry, child labor laws, and by changing the competition from large companies. In the end, all of these proved that the reformers turned out to be very successful in bringing reform to a national level. Along with these issues that the progressives tried to stop competition, they also fought many groups that tried to eliminate social classes along the way. Progressives were able to be successful in restoring economic competition, making the government more efficient, and stemming the tide of socialism.
The Progressive Era was a time period between the years 1900-1920 and it marked a time in American history in which society was bursting with enthusiasm to improve life in the industrial age by making political and social changes through government action that ultimately led to a higher quality of life for American citizens. Progressives were known for their beliefs in limiting the power of big business, strengthening the power of the states, and were advocators against corruption and social injustice. These progressive reformers as well as the Federal Government successfully managed to improve the quality of life and establish a precedent for a move active government, although neither was completely successful in solving significant issues the nation faced.
The Age of Reform throughout 1825-1850 was a great turning point for American society. The ideas and beliefs throughout the reform movements greatly expanded the democratic ideals. Reform movements in the United States sought to express ideas through religion and education, start movements through abolition and temperance acts, expand beliefs by caring for the insane, and take a stand by speaking up for personal rights .
The Progressive era was a time where change was needed in order to eliminate social Darwinism and highlight the significance of social unity and camaraderie. Progressive movements became the response to the rising problems left by the 19th century: the evident unequal distribution of wealth and the expanding power of massive businesses. In the book Triangle: The Fire that changed America, David Von Drehle unveiled the greedy nature of corporate owners which repressed the democratic principles of the United States and its relation to the rise of social movements which shed light to many changes that occurred socially starting with the improved working conditions and in the beginning of the twentieth century.

However, with this political and economic reform came social injustice. Those who pushed for the Movement were called Progressives. Although all goals were not met, the Progressive Movement was very successful because of the way it improved working conditions for those in all labor fields, put limits on child labor, and made the food and drug industry safe for consumers. The corruption and undue influence in the government was still seen and there was still small inclusion of the people in the political process. Even with these goals not being met, the Movement was successful because of the social and economic improvements. The many acts and administrations created by protests, strikes of workers, and political onlookers not only improved our country democratically, but socially and industrially.
During the Progressive Era in the early twentieth century, the reformers and the federal government were limited in their successful in bringing reform at a national level. Although there were a sufficient number of reforms of this movement that made significant gains, some did not fare as well as others. Reforms regarding corporation regulation, the fight against child labor and women rights were three movements that were particularly reasonable in terms of their success. Furthermore progressives had a limited effect in bringing national reform.
The Progressive Era, a time in which many laws and implementations were put in place to benefit the average person, allowed for many wonderful opportunities for farmers, machine workers, women, and children alike. These changes allowed for the rights and opportunities of the people to expand. Prior to these changes, America was in the midst of a dirty, unfair life, thriving on the misfortune of the overworked lower class. Many people were not able to exist past that of the workplace due to the unfair wages and ridiculous work hours. Living conditions were cramped and filthy. The Progressive Era was a political, social, and economic movement during the 1870s to 1920s. Activists called Progressives wanted to address many problems that the industrialization had created including making America’s economic and political systems more equal. There were three main areas they focused on: improving working conditions, improving health and opening more health services, and reforming the government. Although there were many attempts at making progress, there were many areas where they were unsuccessful.
