Professionalism is a broad term defined as the competence or skill expected of a professional and entails several key components when broken down. One can practice professionalism in a variety of settings such as school, sports, volunteering, research, and work. According to the APTA professionalism reflects seven main core values within the physical therapy profession: accountability, altruism, compassion/caring, excellence, integrity, professional duty, and social responsibility. I have come to understand what it means to be professional and further developed a sense of professionalism through various experiences throughout my life including school, work, research and observation. I will continue to exemplify/reflect these values as a student of physical therapy as well. The core values of accountability and integrity were understood and developed at a young age for me. In school I learned the importance of …show more content…
In order to be successful and strive for the best professional you can be in your area, one needs to possess and actively practice excellence, integrity, altruism, compassion, accountability as well as encompass their professional and social responsibilities. As a rehabilitation technician at the Cleveland Clinic, a previous student of pre-Physical Therapy degree, and as an observer in the therapy field, I try my best to excel in all the areas of professionalism mentioned. Working alongside licensed therapists and other hospital staff as well as with DPT professors throughout my research, I have really been ‘shown the ropes’ and able to experience such great(better word here) examples of professionalism first hand. I strive(different synonym) to be great therapists like them and realize that it all starts and stems from being professional as a student in a doctor of physical therapy degree program
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is a national professional organization representing more than 74,000 members and its goal is to foster advancements in physical therapy practice, research, and education. The APTA just like every other organization has a code of ethics that it requires its members to follow. In 1935, APTA adopted its first Code of Ethics and Discipline. This Code provided a formal statement that acknowledged the ethical obligations of Association members. Since 1935, the Code has been revised several times. The current version of the Code of Ethics was adopted by APTA's House of Delegates in 2009 and

Entering my first year of college I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted to do. I still didn’t choose a major let alone a career. I was stuck in between wanting to make enough money that my family would be taken care of financially and choosing a career that I wouldn’t mind going in to work every day. The one thing that I was certain of was that I wanted to be able to help people in whatever I chose to do. After careful consideration and exploring the options available to me, I have come to the conclusion that I want to have a career in physical therapy. Physical therapy is the treatment of disease, injury or deformity through physical methods rather than through drugs or surgery.
In a highly respected profession such as nursing, professionalism is an important element to staying employed and setting one’s self apart from the rest of the applicants when competing for a potential job. By definition professionalism are the qualities and traits that describe a professional. Not only was it easy to demonstrate, but I hit the main concepts of professionalism which accountability, autonomy, and teamwork. While in my acute care clinical, I came dressed appropriately with all my supplies I needed for the day. I also was able to be a good representation of the nursing profession and DMACC by following the ADN student outcome's professionalism. This included me being accountable when I came to clinical. I kept fidelity when I would keep my promises of coming back to the patient when I said I would. I also made sure to get my mentoring nurse, when I was unsure how to do a skill a client was asking me to do. However, I maintained a sense of autonomy when I was able to answer the questions and preforming skills by myself. However, when I needed help from a peer or the working patient care technician (PCT), I did not hesitate to ask. I also did what I could to help my nurse and PCT with their work load depicting teamwork in professionalism. As it can be seen, I had no problem demonstrating professionalism in clinicals through following DMACC's ADN student outcome's professionalism. It was feasible to be an excellent team player while maintaining accountability and autonomy (DMACC, 2017-2018,

My journey to pursue an education in physical therapy actually originates from my early childhood. I endured a very impoverished upbringing and my family’s socioeconomic status was below the poverty line. At a very young age, money became the central issue of my life. I found myself worrying about mortgages, health bills, and grocery money. As I grew older, I vowed to myself that I would not endure my family’s financial burdens into my adulthood. I knew the best way to accomplish this was by obtaining a college degree and having a professional career. However, I was unsure what career I wanted to pursue. I experimented with many different career ideas, but during my sophomore, I discovered my passion and skill for physical medicine. For my

These are the skills and competencies I have learned through my studies at Walden University. Kaslow, Grus, Campbell, & Fouad, et al. (2009) stated professionalism comes from my respect for those who need help. Integrity can be built with confidence in the therapist. Attitudes are charitable, polite, caring emotions toward others that fuel my motivation toward helping.
Professionalism is defined as one's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not restricted to those in occupations with high level of education or high earnings. Any worker regardless of their level of education or occupation should demonstrate a high level of this trait (About.com, 2013).
