Social workers, working in the eco-social framework require more than common sense to provide best service delivery to clients on an individual and community level. Eco-social framework and traditional social work paradigms need to intertwine to work efficiently with the increasingly growing environmental crises that can have devastating effects on individuals and communities. Moreover, professional knowledge “the organisational, legislative and policy context within which practice takes place” (Chenoweth, & McAuliffe 2015 p. 308) plays a huge role in making professional judgements from evidence based theories and incorporating this theory to practice making up the characteristics of a professional social worker. The increasing ecological crises that people are facing include an array of physical, psychological and emotional issues (Peeters, 2012 p. 2). Ecological crises continue to rise resulting in exacerbated economic crises, thus widening the gap between the higher socio-economic and lower socio-economic population (Peeters, 2012 p. 2). This also plays a part in unequal consumption patterns the higher social-economic population who have generally a larger footprint using more greenhouse gases (Dominelli, 2013 p. 434). Therefore, professional knowledge is not common sense. Social workers need to use professional knowledge in practice allowing them to clarify, reflected upon, justified and their work with a client. Professional knowledge allows social workers to make professional judgements for which actions and decisions are based on. An example of this is when a child protection worker required to prioritise the presenting issues, tasks and risks to establish the appropriate outcome of action regarding an at-risk child.
