Professional athletes do have an obligation to make a difference in the community just as the president has a responsibility to this country. Athletes and celebrities who are looked up to by others have a duty to lead people in the right direction. People who watch sports, most likely have a favorite athlete, which causes them to ‘want to be just like them’. Athletes help by motivating younger people to be healthy, active and to stay in school, which are some major problems that are being faced in the community. Just like celebrities, athletes are not forced to help, but sometimes it could be up to their contract to help out, which isn't always a bad thing. They are not supposed to sacrifice their lives to help out, but a minute of their days
This research paper will determine whether professional athletes deserve a second chance to play in professional sports after inappropriate behaviors. Professional athletes are considered idols and are often held to higher standards. Society has become concerned with so many of today’s athletes making the evening news for their unsuitable behaviors.
They entertain millions all while dealing with laborious training. Some athletes also have terribly short careers because of injuries. One famous basketball player, Maurice Stokes only played for three years before having a seizure and going into a coma. Even though they push through all of this, they’re still being paid an abundance of money. There are still other people risking their lives and falling victim to the same injuries as athletes. Players do not deserve the money they receive. There are people who do much more than the players do. Why do teachers not get paid millions of dollars to teach kids? Some of those kids end up going on to become professional athletes. Police officers and firemen risk their lives to keep people safe and most of them do not even make any more than 95 thousand dollars a year (Megerian). These athletes get fined more money than that and hand it over like someone just asked them for one dollar. Players have all of this money and do not even do anything worth earning it. Why do they get this money? It is because fans value athletes more than the important things in life like education and family.
1. It has become much harder to identify the true and amateur-taught values around sport in our culture. The passion for competition, the aspect of a team, and the actions of sportsmanship are deep values that sports act to instill. It becomes one of the most important ways to teach those values to our young and unfortunately is becoming easy to forget. Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have been affected by sports in their bank accounts. Tax increases for funding a new stadium, golf course and even school programs have hurt the middle class Americans. Sports have taken control of small communities and soon will take control of society
The money given to the athletes could be used for more probable causes. Recently Alex Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers signed a contract for 252 million dollars over a span of 10 years. This is enough money to feed the nation's poor for a year or to provide a lot more housing and shelters for the homeless. Others could benefit from the millions being wasted on these athletes. Not because the players don’t earn the money but because it could just be better spent on more important issues in our communities.
While he makes much money, he gives back to society. He helps others in need with millions of dollars. Doing this could save many lives. While this may be true, athletes aren’t careful on how they spend the rest of their earnings. For example, Derek Jeter has bought a penthouse and expensive items for other people to adore him (TWC). He could be using this money on situations found all over the world and easily handle his money otherwise, to live an easier life. Greater things can refer to helping homeless families, education, and eradicating disease. Other athletes have done worse, by going bankrupt or using drugs. Most athletes are careless with their own money, and shouldn’t be dealt to handle that much money. In the article, “Are Athletes Overpaid?”, Elizabeth Vollmer stated, “78% of pro football players go broke after retirement and 60% of basketball players lose all their funds within 5 years of retirement.” How can these types of people be trusted with money, if they never learned finance management? These sports play their athletes the most, and they are still wasting it on luxurious items, alcohol, or cars. With this, they not only hurt themselves but the economy. This brings more poor people into the world’s hands to solve. While athletes are given lots of money for a few years, they do not realize to not spend all of it, if they dropped out of school. A lot of Athletes are model citizens that you should really look up to, but there are. also some bad apples in the bunch that ruin it for everyone. Athletes can inspire young people to work hard so that their efforts can pay off, but no one. is pure and flawless. If you were to compare what most athletes spend their money on to somebody like Bill Gates, you would see a significant difference. Bill Gates is considered to be very generous as he makes a very large amount of money per year but also gives a large portion to charitable foundations. Athletes now, and even back to when professional sports started, take for granted the amount of money that they make and what they could spend it on. I'm not opposed to them making a good salary, but after all, they are getting paid to do what they love. Now granted that they do have to devote a large portion of their lives to the sport that they play, there should be a good amount of pay in return but I think it has gone too far with trying to get the best players all on certain teams and paying them millions of
