This Ted Talk was by far one of the most eye-opening and truthful talks I have ever heard. It was not due to the content of the material being presented, but it was how Tim Urban was able to use visible images to connect with variety of audiences. Not only this, but the relevance of procrastination in our daily lives. Tim Urban was able to explain his hypothesis using these two examples while also citing how procrastination has personally affected his life. Now, procrastination is something that many people have a hard time grasping. During his Ted Talk, Tim Urban explains what goes on in the mind of a master procrastinator. He says, “in the mind of a master procrastinator, there is a rational decision maker, but this rational decision maker
is sometimes affected by the gratification money”. He believes that in a procrastinators brain, there is something (like a monkey) that keeps them from doing the required work. They rather do what is easy and fun, rather than do something that is hard for the bigger picture. However, he does mention that when push comes to shove, the procrastinators are able to go above human abilities in order to get the job done. Now, it may essentially be classified as bad work, but at least they got the job done, right? Urban sees this and tells the audience that everyone is a procrastinator. He believes that there are two forms of procrastination and they generally involve deadlines. These two types of procrastination are short term procrastination (with deadlines) and long term procrastination (without deadlines). While saying this, Urban hypothesizes that we are all procrastinating about something in life, we just have to figure out what it is. He then goes on to talk about some of the emails he has received about people having the same problem as him, but never gives a clear cut answer to a solution. His main goal was to provide the audience with the proper information about why procrastinators are the way that they are. When examining this talk, I fell in love with it because it even applies to my everyday life. I am a personal victim of procrastination. However, what really stood out to me in this presentation was Urbans use of visual aid. Now, we tend to think of Ted Talks being presented by some of the most prestigious minds in the entire world. While Urban may be smart, his graphics were those of a 5 year old, but they were used in such a way that everyone with a functioning brain could understand. Everything from the stick figure drawings, to the panic monster, and the gratification monkey, everything was used to help explain procrastination from kids all the way to adults. His unique style of presentation allowed him to connect with people of various ages. Secondly, another thing I noted was how he made the crowd laugh. His use of jokes made the crowd laugh and kept their attention. Overall, I have no complaints about Urbans performance because it was one of the best talks I have ever watched. It was not over sophisticated, or specific to one group of people. It applies to everyone and he did a great job of showing how procrastinators think and act.
I choose the ted talk of journalist Jon Ronson: Strange answers to the psychopath test. His speech had various strong points and personal experiences. He uses various strategies to hook his audience and get his point out. He engages with the audience and gets them to listen he keeps them engaged by having humor and telling stories. He uses statistics to infom the audience and even tries to calculate how many psychopaths there is in the audience. He has verbal and nonverbal cues that connect is main points.
The TED Talk “Why 30 is not the new 20” by Meg Jay, was a powerful and successful speech. Jay delivers an inspirational message to twenty-year-olds to not waste away important years of their life in an unmeaningful relationship or career. Instead she stresses the importance of searching for a life-long partner sooner rather than later in life. She also talked about taking career risks while still young, because these opportunities will likely be indefeasible later in life. Jay 's main points were very effective in persuading one to consider living by this set of social standards. It is clear that Meg Jay is an experienced public speaker, because of how well the overall presentation was. She does all of the basics perfectly, such as standing
The root of procrastination can be found in the lack of planning. However, this weakness in my leadership role is more about the hesitation to prioritize and make effective leadership decisions. I tend to delay some important decisions and focus in some less essential ones to gain more time for what Roberts and Rowley called “lots of relationship behavior and support, but little direction” (2008, p. 62). This failing can cause a lot of delay to resolve some business challenges on a timely manner.
Procrastination is used mentally to comfort us and give us refuge from our deep inner fears. While it is often perceived as a character defect the fact is that it is really used to defend our self-worth and independence. As the author states “Generally we re taught that procrastination is the problem, rather than a symptom of other problems. This diagnosis, instead of directing your efforts toward ending the cycle of pressure, fear, and procrastination, unfortunately makes matter worse by blaming you for choosing such an awful habit.” The first step to overcoming procrastination is to stop criticizing yourself and to accept that you are in fact imperfect and human. Procrastination is actually rewarding as it helps us relieve some of our everyday stresses, the problem is we can become addicted to these rewards by learning to use it in three ways: as an indirect way of resisting pressure from authorities, as a way of lessening fear of failure by providing an excuse for a disappointing, less-than-perfect performance, ...
Brian Little, an award-winning psychology professor explains the science behind personalities in his Ted talk, “ Brian Little: Who are you really? The puzzle of personality.” He is a professor at Cambridge University and his students often describe him as, “A cross between Robin Williams and Einstein.” Brian wrote the book Me, Myself, and Us: The Science of Personality and the Art of Well-Being. Brian uses his degree in psychology and the acronym OCEAN to explain the different characteristics of personalities in his TED talk, “Brian Little: Who are you really? Procrastination & nbsp; & nbsp; It is Monday morning and I have slept in, thanks to Thanksgiving. In fact, it's twelve o'clock and I am free for the afternoon. As usual, I sit in. front of the television after I clean myself up, staring endlessly at the screen with my finger clicking on the remote.
11:09 p.m. -It isn't any night out of the ordinary. It's basically the same as every other Sunday night. The parties are all over, all the students are back and I know, most, like myself are wishing they hadn't gone out that night when homework was calling their name or wished they had come in earlier last night when their eyes were heavy, but their friends had convinced them otherwise. This is a lesson in procrastination. Mere hours are left before our first class begins, yet the televisions are still glowing, the stereos are still blasting an incessant flow of music at obnoxious levels and people are still streaming by my open door. Girls giggle as they talk of Johnny or Alex or Jimmy or what's his name and every couple minutes I catch the tail end of a meaningless conversation that distracts me from whatever it is I'm trying to accomplish.

Napoleon Hill said procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday. A lot of people today will actually experience procrastination in their everyday life, and is not looked at as a problem until it interferes with peoples’ ability to work and if it creates psychological and physical discomfort. Students often procrastinate and most research is observing the college students likeliness to procrastinate. To look at only college students would be bias however since it affects everyone, almost every day. To find out why people procrastinate, looking at personality and motivation can be where the answer lies. One of the leading researchers in procrastination is Joseph Ferrari. He looks at the definition of procrastination, many reasons procrastinations occurs, and the personality types it occurs in.
A. H. C. Chu and J. N. Choi, psychologists, distinguished two types of protracting, they discovered that active procrastination has attainable characteristics that lead to positive personal outcomes (Choi and Moran). These positive personal outcomes are a result of waiting at its finest. People with these adequate dilatory skills have probably learned from their deficient habits in the past that may help everyone know that the view of holding off can change. Writing this essay has changed my view on procrastination slightly, as I can see how it can be good for you. With my siblings, my free time is limited.

The definition of procrastination is: the action of delaying or postponing something. Tim Urban, who conducts a speech called Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator for TED in 2016, explains that every human is a procrastinator- some more than others. I agree with everything he says in his speech because I can connect with every piece of evidence he claims, mostly including that there is a “Panic Monster” that pops up in your brain when you are close to a deadline and haven’t gotten anything done, especially when it comes from why I’m always so stressed out about school. There are two different kinds of procrastination: deadline and non-deadline. (Urban, 2016) Everyone that I have ever met is a procrastinator
People all procrastinate at one time or another. Procrastination is the practice of delaying work on important tasks in favor of less challenging ones. Chronic procrastinating hinders productivity and affects our state of mind by creating anxiety and stress (Reichelt). As deadlines approach, one often feels frustration and guilt for not starting on a task earlier. We often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which often results in a mad scramble to finish the project in the twenty-four hours before the projects deadline. One of the biggest factors contributing to procrastination is the misconception that we need to be inspired or in the mood to work on the task at hand (Reichelt). However, the reality is that if you wait for the “right time” you will most likely wait for an indefinite amount of time and the task will never get completed.
Procrastination can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life because procrastination is the thief of time. When you keep putting off things, they keep piling up and getting in your way of achieving other things. Then you have missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, feel stressed, guilt and resentment; you find you are being overwhelmed easily because there is just so much to do.
Most humans have habits, habits in which they do simply because if they do not do them they feel uncomfortable. Procrastination is one of those habits that not all, but most people suffer from. Procrastination means to put off key things to do less important things that could possibly wait. It has been proving that all most everyone procrastinates, but procrastination does not determine what type of person one is. Procrastination is like a virus or a bad cold that does not want to go away. If one does not stop the problem it will get bigger; therefore, if people do not control their procrastinating they will start to do it more. However, the worst time to procrastinate is in college. College students often forget hoe important time is. Being a procrastinator can lead to several different outcomes. Procrastination can led to either good or bad outcomes. It all depends on the person doing the procrastinating. Procrastination is not always meant to happen; sometimes it simply happens because a person is too busy. Procrastination has both good and bad causes and effects, can cause failure, and bad decisions.
