How Can We Help People Who Struggle With Procrastination? Be able to know that you are a procrastinator in order to be helped. Have a commitment to yourself to get things done and making a to do list can help. Also, creating reminders through the day to help with what’s needed to get done. Write some of your goals so you can accomplish them. Having someone you can tell your goals, and how you plan to accomplish them is also good help. They can push you into making your goals. In order for you not to be distracted from social media you can use tools such as Rescue Time, Self-Control, and Focus to block those web sites while you do your work. Setting a timer can also help because you get to work on it for a minute, then come back at it after 60 seconds. Breaking down tasks into smaller amounts will help you with having to overwhelm yourself with so much. Sometimes you can even help yourself by simply giving treats after a task or being able to know that you can use social media after getting done with the work/task. Also, telling yourself that no one is perfect can actually help with failure because you will think less of trying to be perfect. Then you will actually try to do your task because you won’t be afraid of failure. Since procrastinators tend to say that the tasks are boring you can have a twist, and try to play a game to see how many of the task you can get done in such amount of time. It’s a good method for those who say the task are boring and they lack motive. Stop thinking about other things and focus on what needs to be done. Most of the time that people procrastinate is spent on social media. Therefore, having to stay away from it as possible because it will help you in the long run. If you stay on social media, there’s a tendency of forgetting about the big picture which is getting your task done. One detail that procrastinators tend to tell themselves is that your career depends on getting the task done that which contributes to more pressure on yourself. You don’t want to over stress yourself as you have already done. Sometimes all it takes is to change the way you view things in order to get much done. Stop yourself from looking away because you don’t want to do something. Just simply try to do it because it doesn’t help you but harm you. Another form of knowing how to manage your time will be writing down how you use your time on a daily basis. With that being said, you will find that you don’t actually need to be using your time by just simply being on the internet for so long. Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.
The best way to procrastinate is to interact with other people. That way you can lay part of the blame on someone else: "Well, Mom was talking to me about something important. I couldn't just walk away." I prefer to talk on the phone to friends who go to schools far away. We usually don't talk too often, so when we do, we have to make it count. For those that who don't want to spend a mountain of money on phone bills, any kind of messaging system on the Internet is a great way to communicate.
I am a procrastinator and I have been ever since I was a child, which I am sure many others have been as well. As a child, I would put off my work mainly because I did not want to do and wanted to occupy myself with something else, rather than to sit there and actually do the work. 11:09 p.m. -It isn't any night out of the ordinary. It's basically the same as every other Sunday night. The parties are all over, all the students are back and I know, most, like myself are wishing they hadn't gone out that night when homework was calling their name or wished they had come in earlier last night when their eyes were heavy, but their friends had convinced them otherwise. Procrastination has become a problem in our society in which individuals choose to complete mandatory tasks either late or right before the deadline. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, procrastination is “to be slow or late about doing something that should be done: to delay doing something until a later time because you do not want to do it, because you are lazy, etc.” Individuals choose to procrastinate for a multitude of reasons; consequently, those who procrastinate may find solving their dawdling behavior particularly difficult. Each individual is different; therefore, different solutions will be prevalent. Commonly, to recover from a procrastination issue, therapy acts as an option to help re-program your brain. Also, planning your day carefully or taking a step-by-step program to solve procrastination issues may be relevant.
With procrastination, I find out that I still need major improvement. I always seem to buy gifts at the last minute. With this type of behavior, this may be critical if I’m married or have children in the future. Doing things on time will kill the procrastination. I often say to myself, “I have enough time to do it later.” That’s one big killer that would cause me to delay my goals that I have set for me. According to Burka, “When people observe their behavior and clarify what’s behind their resistance, they may realize that they are automatically reacting with old patterns and fears from the past, rather than responding to circumstances in the present situation (Burka 153).” With this research this allows me to focus more on improvement and that means to not look back on my past, but be positive and do it now then delay what to do.
Things that need to be done just have to be done. The popular motto “Just Do It” is commonly used when instead of acting, we start planning and thinking. Of course, using our reasoning and logic to develop a mindset is important. When it comes to strategies, I believe that having statistical data is the best. We forget a lot of small details that could actually make a huge difference. The “Daily Task Form” mentioned in the book is actually a very good way of finding out how we are “losing time” in our daily tasks. When we notice a pattern of how many lost hours there are in a week in activities that were rather unproductive, then we can fix it. This is a good way to fight procrastination. Setting up deadlines and completing your assignments a few days before the due date will eliminate the procrastination stage. Creating a list with the most important priorities first, will help sort out your assignments and eliminate stress and feeling overwhelmed.
I did not expect to find that procrastination was my main problem. I knew that it was a slight issue for me, at least, but I thought that distractions were my top study detractor. That was until I realized that I am not as easily distracted as I thought, but that I use my distractions as a form of procrastination. For example, on Monday afternoon, I had no problem committing myself to a two hour study session for Spanish. For many people, this would have been too long of a period to concentrate on one thing, but I was able to complete all of the necessary reading and online assignments in one sitting, without pulling out my phone or other distractions. Unfortunately, following this significant study session, I allowed myself a “break” for checking email and social media that turned into an hour-long procrastination period. I let myself become distracted because I knew that I would need to start my English paper that night — an assignment I was dreading.
