Process analysis Drug use is a very serious issue in the college world. Many kids fall victim to drugs in high school or in the early college years due to family problems, peer pressure, and stress. Even a short term use of drugs may lead to legal issues in which the college has the right to academically suspend the student. The road back requires countless hours of rehab, reputation redemption, and a great loss of self-value. The best way to prevent drugs is attending clubs and keeping yourself busy with activities Drugs aren’t a one-time deal once you let in they will consume the world living around you. Drugs are parasites that will always live in the college world, and no one is immune; once you start a drug, you start a very long painful process back to health. “The major causes of drug abuse are drug dependence, followed by peer group influence and stress.” (Taiwan, ”Analysis of drug abuse data reported by medical institutions in Taiwan from 2002 to 2011”) Most college students feel the need for drugs to reconcile for all of the built up stress, overwhelming amount of homework, and parental expectations. Others are forced upon drugs through negative peer pressure or a poor relationship with their family during childhood. College can bring many influences to try a drug like; parent independence, following a trend, or drugs at a party. You must discipline yourself to just say “No” as that is your greatest power. As a student you need to find alternative ways to channel your anger and stress into a positive way drugs are never the answer. I’m not saying to live in your closet I’m just saying say no at a party when you are offered ecstasy. Whatever the cause is for starting a drug there will always be consequences that you wil... ... middle of paper ... ...process. Drug prevention is best practiced at local club meetings or during meetings of support groups. I interviewed a former Angelo State University student, Skylar Richter, and he provided me with some great information. Skylar’s roommate fell victim to drugs his freshman year of college. Although the roommate had to drop out to attend rehab and support groups Skylar kept in touch. The guy returned to college Skylar’s sophomore year, I asked Skylar, for some info on his road to recovery and Skylar said, “He told me that the first twenty days were the hardest after that recovery wasn’t so bad.” (Richter, ASU) Addiction is so strong it’s best to attend some of the support groups around your area to prevent even the possibility of drug use. Drugs are always going to be a problem but as long as you know where to go to get help you can reduce the effects to a minimum.
Chasing Heroin is a two-hour documentary that investigates America’s heroin crisis. The documentary details the opioid epidemic and how police offers, social workers, and public defenders are working to save the lives of addicts. The documentary explores the origins and continuing causes behind the heroin epidemic such as; massive increases in opioid painkillers starting at the turn of the century, Mexican drug cartels who are now rooted in upper-middle-class neighborhoods, and the cheap price of heroin when compared to prescription pain killers. A program in Seattle called LEAD is explored. This program channels addicts into a system that points them toward help (rehab, temporary housing, counseling, methadone treatment) instead of prison
A Harm Reduction approach to therapy begins with the intent to lessen any high-risk behavior that can be linked back to substance abuse. A treatment plan that focuses on the clients positive behaviors is developed. Hazardous behaviors are addressed through means of educating, and motivating the client. Once a client is properly educated in the positive ways to prevent or lessen harm through substance abuse, they are often motivated to begin to use their treatment as something that focuses on working towards complete recovery from their addiction. Moderation Management and Controlled Use is an approach that is intended to reduce consumption and therefore reduce harm to an individual. The individual is encouraged and taught productive ways to reduce drug intake and gain more control over situations that involve use such as limiting use, attending support groups, forming positive support system within their group of friend or wi...
Substance addiction is becoming an epidemic. While some people can quit using a substance without any help, most people need help to their recovery. Narcotics anonymous is an important support group for our society. There are many different narcotic anonymous programs to join that have meetings throughout the week. The members of the support group all share one thing in common, they suffer from different types of chemical dependency. Members help each other because they have the same problems and worries that everyone in the room has. Though they may be struggling with different stages in their life, for the most part, they all relate to what each is going through. Just as AA, NA focuses on the 12-step program. The members of
Relapse prevention can be defined as the set of designed coping skills or tools that can be utilized to reduce the chances that the user will resort back to unhealthy behavior or get worse through continued substance use. Knowledge or skills for relapse prevention include; identification of early signs of relapse, identifying and singling out high risk factors for a possible relapse, how to make wise daily choices that won’t lead the client back to drug abuse, and implementing early coping strategies to avoid relapse (Sofuoglu, 2010).
There are many contributing factors and political issues that address substance abuse. Throughout the years, many researchers have designed many interventions and social policies designed to treat people who have used, abused, and became addicted to substances. Today, there are many new studies that address substance abuse at the individual, group, family, and community or policy levels. Today, there are many services that are effective for decreasing recidivism in youth who have completed a substance abuse program. A substance abuse treatment program or center is the best way to treat individuals who have abused substances.
Years ago, the common image of an adolescent drug abuser was a teen trying to escape from reality on illegal substances like cocaine, heroin, or marijuana. Today, there is a great discrepancy between that perception and the reality of who is likely to abuse drugs. A teenage drug abuser might not have to look any further than his or her parent’s medicine chest to ‘score.’ Prescription drug abuse by teens is on the rise. Also, teens are looking to prescription drugs to fulfill different needs other than to feel good or escape the pressures of adulthood. Teens may be just as likely to resort to drugs with ‘speedy’ side effects, like Ritalin to help them study longer, as they are to use prescription painkillers to check out of reality. Pressures on teens are growing, to succeed in sports or to get high grades to get into a good college (Pressures on today’s teens, 2008, theantidrug). Furthermore, because prescriptions drugs are prescribed by doctors they are less likely to be seen as deleterious to teens’ health. A lack of awareness of the problem on the part of teens, parents and society in general, the over-medication of America, and the greater stresses and pressures put upon teens in the modern world have all conspired to create the growing problem of prescription drug abuse by teens.
Drugs cause an overall disturbance in a subjects’ physiological, psychological and emotional health. “At the individual level, drug abuse creates health hazards for the user, affecting the educational and general development of youths in particular” (“Fresh Challenge”). In youth specifically, drug abuse can be triggered by factors such as: a parent’s abusive behavior, poor social skills, family history of alcoholism or substance abuse, the divorce of parents or guardians, poverty, the death of a loved one, or even because they are being bullied at school (“Drugs, brains, and behavior”) .
Most people know at least one person, either a friend or family member, or even a friend of a friend who has, or is suffering from drug addiction. The word “addiction” actually comes from a Latin term that means “enslaved by” or “bound to.” (“Understanding Addiction”, 2014) If you’ve ever tried to help someone to overcome a drug addiction, then you’ll understand why this is so.
Before I start to discuss the various ways to get control of substance abuse I
The four years of college (or more depending on the major) are considered the pinnacle of any young adult’s life; from 18-years-old until college graduation, students go through changes day in and day out, learning about themselves in the process. While some of these changes can be looked at as a good thing (maturing the student into an adult) it may also be conceived as a negative change. In college, where parties are the norm, drinking is encouraged and drugs float around there is no doubt that students at one point or another in their college career will experiment with drugs and alcohol. Experimentation is fine; it’s very normal for any person at any age. However, these experiments could turn into a full blown addiction, if the students
It has been discovered that most people who struggle with drug addiction began experimenting with drugs in their teens. Teenage drug abuse is one of the largest problems in society today and the problem grows and larger every year. Drugs are a pervasive force in our culture today. To expect kids not to be influenced by the culture of their time is as unrealistic as believing in the tooth fairy (Bauman 140). Teens may feel pressured by their friends to try drugs, they may have easy access to drugs, they may use drugs to rebel against their family or society, or they may take an illegal drug because they are curious about it or the pleasure that it gives them.
Before being capable of fighting the use of drugs and alchol, one must come to an understanding of why some people use drugs. The decision to ultimately use drugs is influenced mainly in childhood. Whether in a poor ?ghetto? neighborhood, or in a middle-class suburb, all children are vulnerable to the abuse of drugs. Most high-risk children are effected by personal and family circumstances (Falco 51). If a child?s parents are substance abusers, then it is a fairly safe prediction that the child will abuse drugs later in life. Also, early-life experiments with drugs greatly increases the chance of abuse later in life. Academic problems, and rebellious, anti-social behavior in elementary school are also linked to drug problems, in addition to truancy, delinquency, and ear...
Substance abuse is a challenging battle that cannot be won over night it takes a lot of hard work and dedication from every one. Local government agencies, national, and global evolvement needs to be present to overcome substance abuse. It is important to try and overcome substance abuse due to the negative impact that it is having on society, financially and
The use of drugs is a controversial topic in society today. In general, addicts show a direct link between taking drugs and suffering from their effects. People abuse drugs for a wide variety of reasons. In most cases, the use of drugs will serve a type of purpose or will give some kind of reward. These reasons for use will differ with different kinds of drugs. Various reasons for using the substance can be pain relief, depression, anxiety and weariness, acceptance into a peer group, religion, and much more. Although reasons for using may vary for each individual, it is known by all that consequences of the abuse do exist. It is only further down the line when the effects of using can be seen.
Drug addiction is a very big problem in today’s society. Many people have had their lives ruined due to drug addiction. The people that use the drugs don’t even realize that they have an addiction. They continue to use the drug not even realizing that their whole world is crashing down around them. Drug addicts normally lose their family and friends due to drug addiction.
