Prompt 6: Problems and Solutions Regarding United States Immigration Policy The current immigration policy in the United States has allowed for various issues to develop over the past several years. One major barrier to reform is the differing viewpoints of the pro- and anti-immigration politicians. While both sides agree that the immigration policy needs to be reformed, they cannot agree on how to deal with the issues (Immigration Policy Handout, April 4). Problems such as overstayed visas, border security, the number of illegal immigrants in the country, refugees, and Dreamers need to be solved. Due to the large number of immigrants, it is difficult to find and deport the majority of them. A solution from anti-immigration politicians has been to deputize local police officers as ICE agents and give them the power to ask for an immigrant’s visa to determine whether they are here legally or not. However, pro-immigration politicians have proposed a solution of incentivizing immigrants to self-deport (Immigration Policy Handout, April 4). Under this plan, immigrants who leave the country of their own volition will receive an easier path to citizenship as a reward. Immigrants that are often overlooked when discussing the issues with immigration policy are refugees. Refugees are immigrants who were vetted carefully and entered the country in order to escape from dangerous conditions in their home country (Class Discussion, April 4). This topic was recently revisited by the current U.S. president, Donald Trump. Trump has proposed revisiting the cases of refugees who were admitted decades ago to determine whether the situation in their home country has been resolved.
