Recommended: Fossil fuels and alternative sources of energy
Renewable energies are energy sources that are alternatives to fossil fuels and can be replenished. Everyday industrialized countries pollute the Earth’s atmosphere with fossil fuel byproducts, like CO2, creating adverse effects such as climate change and global warming. From big businesses on an industrial scale to single individuals we all play a part in pollution, with things ranging from factories to automobiles. This is a big concern, considering many people would like to preserve the earth for generations to come. Due to this fact scientists have started to find new ways to provide cleaner and alternative energies to power the Earth. The history of using energies dates way back into the neolithic era when early humans started to
It accounts for over 16 percent of the world 's net electricity production. The most common method of hydropower energy involves the building of dams on rivers and releasing water from a reservoir to drive turbines.(POWERTECH). The second most used and fastest growing renewable energy is wind power. Wind power uses wind to spin a turbine creating electricity. If used in areas with high concentrations of wind it the amount of potential energy to be harnessed is great. The third most used is solar energy. Solar energy uses solar panels or like devices to harness the Sun 's heat and light energy and turn that into usable electrical
One disadvantage with renewable energy is that it is difficult to generate as much electricity that fossil fuel generates. This means that we need to reduce the amount of energy we use or simply build more renewable energy facilities. Another disadvantage of renewable energy sources is reliability. Renewable energy relies on the weather for its source of power. Hydro generators need flowing water, wind turbines need wind to turn the blades, and solar panels need clear skies and sunlight to collect heat and make electricity.(SOLARSCHOOLS). When these are unavailable we can 't attain energy from them. The current cost of renewable energy technology is also more expensive than fossil fuel technology. This is because it is a newer technology and as such has extremely large capital
Why don’t we use more renewable energy sources? What role do they currently play? According to Energy Kids, in 2008 renewable resources only produced seven percent of the energy that we used. One reason we don’t use a lot of renewable energy
Its most known process of generating electricity would be movement of air through wind turbines. Wind power has two parts, mechanical and electrical systems. Mechanical systems are low speed and are used for mechanical tasks such as pumping water or grinding grain. Electrical systems are high speed and are used to generate electricity to power homes or schools. Many people feel that wind farms full of turbines, are aesthetically unpleasing, but wind power is a clean energy source and does not generate greenhouse gas emissions. It is a very abundant resource throughout the United States. Wind power is simple, relatively cheap, and low maintenance (Sambu). Wind power is again, free and very abundant so no matter how much we use now, we will still obtain enough in the
...lobal warming and innumerable animal fatalities worldwide. Workers in the fossil fuel industries undergo irrational risks of an inevitable explosion every day. Thousands of human lives have been taken in offshore oil rig explosions, coal mines and natural gas pipelines. In addition, fossil fuels are directly linked to rising global warming temperatures and drast changes in the environment. Likewise millions of avian fatalities were linked to fossil fuels plants, emitting greenhouse gases are responsible for acidic oceans that harm marine species, and thousands of animals are harmed by oil spills in the sea. Based on this research, fossil fuels are harming the Earth excessively. Renewable energy sources offer efficient and cleaner energy that will benefit the globe. Renewable energy is the definite solution to end human’s heavy dependence upon ancient fossil fuels.
Alternative energy sources are renewable, and is most commonly referred to as free energy sources. There are many alternative energy sources such as hydro power, solar power, wind, biomass, and geothermal. Using alternative sources is more expensive in the long run, but it is the much safer option for our environment compared to fossil fuels. Although everything used is completely free, such as water and wind, the equipment used to generate these things are expensive. There are several pros and cons that come with the utilization of alternative energy sources.
In chapter thirteen of our book, Environment by Raven and Berg, it shows us just how important renewable energy sources are. Currently the United States of America thrives on the use of fossil fuels and nuclear power. The main problems with these types of fuel are that they are both limited and can be extremely harmful to our environment. They cause global warming, air pollution, acid rain, and oil spills (Environment), and not only that, but in the grand scheme of things, these sources really aren’t even that cheap of a fuel source. There are many alternatives to these all but outdated fuel sources.
Electricity is the most famous and common use of nuclear power. In most countries nuclear powers more than 10% of their electricity. The U.S. with 100 atomic reactors create 19% of our power, and 30% of the electricity around the
The United States currently relies heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for its energy. While the price of natural gas per barrel continues to plummet, the United States is constantly seeking new sources of renewable energy. Renewable energy consists of any type of natural resource (solar power, ocean power, wind power, rain, snow, etc.). that naturally and automatically replenishes itself. Renewable energy is important because it is infinite and everlasting, meaning our children and our children’s children will be able to utilize these resources long after we are gone.
Energy is the basic necessity of daily life. Nowadays, dependence on fossil fuels for energy needs becoming lower in numerous countries due to the potential of renewable energy to supply sustainable energy to the huge populations in many developing countries who are short of clean and continues energy. Generally, renewable energy can be defined as energy that is derived from natural resources which are constantly replenished and theoretically inexhaustible. Fossil fuels on the other hand can be described as energy that cannot be renewed and will eventually diminish. Thus, in many developing countries renewable energy is the alternative energy to replace non-renewable energy or commonly known as fossil fuels. In addition, according to Sorensen (2004), there is a greater demand for renewable energy sources nowadays due to the uncertainty of fuel price rise in living expenses. Commonly, there are many types of renewable energy available in our world such as wind power, biomass energy, solar energy, hydroelectric power and geothermal energy. However, the main three example of renewable energy are hydroelectric power, solar and biomass energy (Refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).
One of the most compelling arguments for the use of renewable energy is how many forms exist of it. Nuclear power, solar power, wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric power, pumped storage, wave power, geothermal power, biomass, and biogas are the most widely known renewable energy sources (Darvill, 2013). This large selection of fuels supports the idea of renewable fuels one day powering the entire planet. All the sources of energy have different niches and benefits. Solar energy is extremely effective when providing energy for small establishments such as a house or small store, but hydrothermal power would be a more plausible solution for factories or large establishments....
To start, let’s go into exactly how this idea of sustainability comes into play with renewable resources. Sustainability is an approach to “economic growth while preserving the quality of the environment for future generations” (Cheever 1). “More than half of all planned energy projects in the Northeast Power Coordinating Council region…are renewable energy projects” a sign that the world is taking a step to become more sustainable (Bhanoo 1). Today a majority of the world’s population relies heavily on coal and other fossil fuels to provide all energy sources. If the global population continues to do so, future generations will not have access to these materials and will not have any other choice but to turn to other energy suppliers. As Craig Pirrong, professor of finance and energy markets director at the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, put it “All renewables are cursed...
One efficient way to acquire energy is Hydropower. Hydropower is power derived from the energy of falling water or fast running water. This energy converter is harmless to the environment. Other ways will affect the atmosphere and the environment in a negative way. The most common device for hydropower is a dam. It relies on the water cycle. This is one of the oldest sources of energy.
Why do we need to rely on renewable sources? Most of the energy that we use today comes from fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, and oil. All of these resources are non-renewable, so you can finish one day. In order to have a better world and a healthy environment for the future, people are trying to obtain energy from natural resources instead of non-renewable sources. In the lecture “Renewable energy resources” (2014), Mistry focuses on some advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy.
...t the demand for electricity than non-renewable. Also it could be more environmentally friendly. Wind energy, as it can be seen that wind energy might lowest danger and more reliability.
The examples of using renewable energy are The Solar Panel which is an assembly of solar cells. The solar cells convert solar energy into electrical energy. The solar panels are very expensive even though they cost nothing to run. They are installed in places which must have sunlight. The efficiency is 10-20% the environmental impact is it needs very large areas, 40km² is needed to produce to produce the equivalent power of one modern power station. Does not cause pollution but there are environmental concerns about the production of storing devices.
