Print Media: Choosing Sensationalism Over Accuracy?
There are so many universal subjects in this world, but there is one that everybody can relate to: the prospect of finding love with someone. With the media being a great influence on what society believes to be true, many of the popular gender-based media are choosing sensationalism over accuracy to get the attention of potential readers. Almost all of these magazines have articles about dating and marriage, spouting out inaccurate information and non-professional advice to impressionable readers. This not only creates various problems for those who are seeking a mate, but in the long run the damage can prevent people from finding true and loving relationships. However, if people are successful enough to find a mate, this doesn’t always mean the couple will be strong enough to work through their problems. And if the couple has children in the future, and this child sees it’s parents arguing about simple matters, will the child have a negative idea about marriage? As a magazine major, I have a tendency to sit around and read a lot of magazines in my spare time. While some of my favorite magazines are for the female audience, such as COSMOPOLITAN and GLAMOUR, I also like to read articles from such men's magazines as MAXIM and PLAYBOY. I have this habit of always comparing the types of articles being published in certain types of magazines, especially if the articles are about relationships. I'm always curious to find out just what kind of advice is being given this month on the art of dating. As I compare both types of magazines, there are three major questions I have to ask: why are these articles so popular among the targeted audience, are these articles used just to sell t...

..., then where is that code of ethics that journalists are supposed to know? I became a journalist in the first place to open up people’s minds about new ideas and things that are going on in the world. I understand that everyone wants a fun article to read once in a while, but when the article is downright useless, then there is a problem. I notice that most of the magazines with these articles are gender-based and popular among the 18-34 year-old age market. These articles can also be perceived as somewhat condescending to the reader because if these are what sell, then this tells me that most Americans only want to be entertained and not informed. There is also one final thought that I have on this topic: should the media be held responsible if a reader takes the contents of an article so seriously that negative results will be produced as a result of the article?

Meursault is a fairly average individual who is distinctive more in his apathy and passive pessimism than in anything else. He rarely talks because he generally has nothing to say, and he does what is requested of him because he feels that resisting commands is more of a bother than it is worth. Meursault never did anything notable or distinctive in his life: a fact which makes the events of the book all the more intriguing.
He believes that human nature is a very good things but at the same time it has been sorted by society. Rousseau felt that if we would behave more authentically we wouldn 't be living in such a corrupt world but he believes that culture and civilization has been the cause to the destruction of humanity, and that is why we are born fake. Rousseau 's thoughts about a man is solitary but not harmful to others. This being said, men are like animals, searching for ways or survive and satisfy themsevles. This is the reason why a man is not an enemy of a man, because there is a collaboration of surviving together; they depend on each other to struggle and overcome the natural conditions. For Rousseau, he points out that it is to be understood how much less different a man to man has to be in the State of nature and how much inequality must rise in humans through the inequality of social institutions(CITE 32). This part in Rousseau 's writing, Discourse on the Origin of Inequality, shows his point of view on the rising inequality in the society between humans and social
The discrepancies in media coverage in coverage of female and children athletics have large gaps, but are gaining momentum in sharing equality. Major athletic leagues such as the NBA and FIFA World Cup have wide gaps in marketing and ratings for their male and female athletes. Children are future athletes and superstars, but as funding and coverage in athletics catering to the males, women are breaking the barriers to be in the spotlight of sport. Both gender contribute equally to athletics, and challenge the each other to accept new ideas and change. The sports world that has a single gender dominating the media is unjust. Society does not want to bored, we need change in sports entertainment to cater to all. Not all parents and teachers are available to educate our children about the concepts of sharing and teamwork, our children are growing up learning key concepts through media. I will discuss these concepts and how they intertwine.
Meursault in the book tries to overcome his emotional indifference within himself. One example shows Meursault emotional indifference against Marie. In this quote, “A minute later she asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn’t mean anything but that I didn’t think so.” The quote explains how Meursault doesn’t really think about the consequences of other people’s emotions. When he said in the quote it didn’t mean anything to him, it shows he believes human life and emotions are meaningless. He also says I didn’t think so, showing he struggles to comprehend and make his own interpretations on human emotions from Marie and other people. Another example shown is Meursault against his mother’s funeral. In this quote ‘Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know. I got a telegram from the home: “Mother deceased. Funeral tomorrow. Faithfully yours.” That doesn’t mean anything. Maybe it was yesterday.’ This quote also shows Meursault idea of human life is meaningless. This shows that Meursault believes it doesn’t really matter if his mother died, he’s probably implying that his mother was dying soon...

This has become a huge source of concern. Male students take active part in sports activities. Girls on the other hand shun such activities.
...ce in society. And the effects of the ideals behind these magazines are all the more powerful because of their subtlety." Women walk away from these magazines with an empty feeling and feelings of many inadequacies and they really don't know exactly why. The subtle undermining of women's intelligence and cause strips away their sense of worth ever so slowly and leaves them feeling depressed and in search of something that really can't exist together. Growing old while staying young takes many years of complete and internal happiness not many years of collagen injections and the added stress of having to stay unattainably perfect. While some consider these journalists for women's magazines talented writers, I consider them horrendous displays of talent in which they sell out the naturally beautiful women of the world for a quick buck and a popular magazine.
Firminger examines the ways these magazines represent young males and females. She reveals that these magazines talks about the physical appearance of young girls but also their sexuality, emotions, and love life. The author informs how the advice given by the magazines is negative. The author also argues that these magazines focus more on their social life than how their academic performance
The psalmist, in Psalms 42, begins with a thirst for the presence of God. The Psalmist is clear about wanting to return home. Home is where the temple or the ‘House of God’ was. The psalmist seems to believe that the only way to get in the presence of God was to return to the temple. The psalmist expresses feels of depression as the psalmist wrestled with feels of abandonment by God. The psalmist confronts God with two questions. “Why was he forgotten?” “Why does God allow the enemies to oppress him?” The psalmist is jaxaposited between despair and hope. Once again, the psalmist proclaims that continued hope will be in God and praises will be given.
In his Discourse on Inequality, Rousseau hypothesizes the natural state of man to understand where inequality commenced. To analyze the nature of man, Rousseau “strip[ped] that being, thus constituted, of all the supernatural gifts he could have received, and of all the artificial faculties he could have acquired only through a lengthy process,” so that all that was left was man without any knowledge or understanding of society or the precursors that led to it (Rousseau 47). In doing so, Rousseau saw that man was not cunning and devious as he is in society today, but rather an “animal less strong than some, less agile than others, but all in all, the most advantageously organized of all” (47). Rousseau finds that man leads a simple life in the sense that “the only goods he knows in the un...
... This is inferred because the articles are about current celebrities and their lives. These would interest those women more than it would a fifty year old man. One can also say that the reader will not see an article about fishing in People magazine because that is not relevant to the target audience. Magazines also have advertisements that would appeal to that target audience. People has advertisements for items such as makeup and face wash which would appeal to young adult women and not an older woman who is in her sixties or seventies. Just like with the articles, one can say that the reader will not find an advertisement for Viagra or for Copenhagen chewing tobacco. It is not relevant to the target audience. This is how a magazine becomes successful and sells a lot of issues. It would not sell as much if it did not stay focused on a particular target audience.
Today’s culture is one where people like to do as little work as possible. Even when it comes to reading our own scripture, The Holy Words of God, a lot of people like to look up one verse and reference it to something without knowing what the rest of the passage says. Psalms 109 is no exception, it is one the more widely misused passages as of late. A popular verse from Psalms 109 is verse 8 which reads “Let his days be few; and let another take his office”, this is seen in reference to our current president, but what people fail to realize is what else David is actually praying. This paper is going to go through Psalms 109 and unpack it verse by verse to show the true meaning of what David was praying and to give us a new look at how to pray.
Psalm 130 is an unnamed psalm in the Hebrew psalter composed by a penitential Israelite. The church has made great use of the psalms. It was written by and anonymous author but is suggested that it could be Hezekiah. It was written during the time of Moses (approximately, 1440 B.C.) and the Babylonian captivity (586 B.C.). The authors of the Psalms are accredited to David who wrote 73 psalms; Asaph who wrote 12, the sons of Korah who wrote 9; Solomon who wrote 2, Heman (with the sons of Korah), Ethan, and Moses each wrote one; and 51 psalms are anonymous. The New Testament ascribes two of the anonymous Psalms (2and 95) to David. The purpose of Psalms 130 is to provide poetry for the expression of praise, worship, and confession to God. The
Malcolm X once said “The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” In 1990, fifty-nine year old Delbert Ward was accused of killing his brother Bill Ward. Delbert was one of four brothers who lived on the family’s land operating a small farm producing milk from cows. During and after Delbert’s trial, loads of media preyed upon the ill-educated man and the village like vultures. Given his impoverished surroundings and his appearance, the media depicted Delbert as a salvage who killed his brother on the same bed that they shared for years. The documentary “Brother’s Keeper” investigated the truth behind the death of Bill Ward. It presents the argument that media manipulates public opinion. Media does manipulate public opinion using many techniques to influence the minds of the mass. The media’s effectiveness, level of bias present, and types of the media source used to portray information to determine how media influence public opinion, as well as address the opposing view to the argument.
“Power is the ability to define reality and to have other people respond to your definition as if it were their own (Nobles).” People fail to see responsible journalism as a crisis because it is so convenient to have news media make up your mind for you. The foundation of our personal philosophies stems from irresponsible journalism through the major news sources we consume, the exposure to less responsible entertainment, and the biased reporting enforcing negative stereotypes.
