Have you ever felt like someone in your life greatly impacted how you live and think? Do you think minor characters in a story can shape the story of a protagonist? Katniss Everdeen is a great example of answering this question. Katniss has many people to prove that a minor character can shape and change a protagonist's perspective on life. Cinna, Primrose, and Rue are minor characters in the Hunger Games who greatly impact Kaniss's life and journey in the games. How you might ask? Primrose Everdeen is Katniss's younger sister and the former tribute of District 12. until her older sister volunteers to take her place in the Hunger Games, Katniss's choice to take her place shows how much Prim means to her and her dedication to protecting her little sister. Katniss's desire to keep Prim safe influences many of her actions and decisions and also serves as a stark …show more content…
Primrose impacts the way Katniss thinks she needs to win and how her only desire is to survive so she can give her family a better life. How does a minor little character like Cinna impact Katniss's character and life? Cinna was Katniss's stylist during the campaigns in the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, He later played a major role in Katniss's rise to prominence in the rebel movement and helped her create her "Girl on Fire" looks which helped win over the the audience during her interview with Ceaser Flickerman. Cinna protected Katniss by helping her appear as unthreatening as possible. It's all a big show. It's all about how you're perceived, so by making her more likable he was able to help her with sponsors which helped her in the games. When Katniss started her rebellion, Cinna understood the importance of it and of how its symbols provide meaning and inspire movements, so he helped her, which led to his death by the Capitol for supporting her and rebelling along with
There are characters in every story to help build a meaning to what is being told. Just because the story is build upon a major character, that doesn’t mean that minor characters aren’t as important. Three reasons that minor characters are important is that they help develop the plot in the story, they can influence how the major character might act, and having minor characters intrigues the audience.
Katniss shows an amazing lead character. She showed independence and strength. “I volunteer” I gasped, “I volunteer as tribute.” (Ross) She showed strength by taking her sister's place in the games. Which means the possibility of death. Influencing her watchers that is it okay to be a woman and taking in responsibilities. The Hunger Games and Anthem bring us two different people but almost the same why by showing us weaknesses and strengths.
There are a few minor characters in the story. There’s Clarisse and there are the firemen. The firemen are only mentioned to give you a better perspective of their world. They are very obedient and don’t seem to have minds of their own. Their personalities are not shown and they don’t really play a significant role in the novel. Clarisse, however, is a big player. She is the reason that Montag decides to quit and print books instead. She is used to get things going and ignite the rebellion, but she is soon killed off. So, she doesn’t have a big enough role to be considered a major character. Most of the minor character4s are there to show contrast with some major characters. This way, you have a better insight as to who they really are.
Many books around throughout time have had two characters that are very similar and can be compared and contrasted. One book, The Hunger Games, introduces the characters of Katniss and Peeta in way so that they may be analyzed quite easily. Katniss and Peeta are both willing to get through the test of the Hunger Games and they both want to keep living for the sake of another person. But, at the same time they are also very different. Katniss has a more masculine personality because she enjoys hunting and scavenging, while Peeta is more reserved because he is just a dough boy and works in a bakery. While The Hunger Games has two great characters to compare and contrast, so does the classic frame narrative, Frankenstein. In Frankenstein, Mary
This part of the journey begins when Rue dies. Katniss tried to save her and failed. She shares her struggle when she shares, "Rue's death has forced me to confront my own fury against the cruelty, the injustice they inflict upon us. But here, even more strongly than at home, I feel my impotence. “There's no way to take revenge on the Capitol. Is there?” (Collins 1364). This part of the journey continues when she finds Peeta inured. Katniss constantly risks her life to get resources to help bring Peeta back to health. Katniss is willing to go through all of this trouble because Peeta is her friend and she knows that his survival is crucial to her winning the games, and returning to her district. Protecting
Minor characters are known for just being a backup player but do they really help shape the theme of a story such as it had in Copper Sun? Like after Amari had her village wiped out and stolen, Amari had first accepted the idea that she no longer had any reason to live for and wanted to die or murder herself by throwing herself off board or cutting herself to bleed to death. But after meeting Afi Amari was able to envision her life differently, Amari stood up for herself and was able to radiate positive vibes to others to survive from the torture she lived every day during the boat ride of living in unsanitary and cluttered. Not only that but Amari was also then packed and marked as a slave forever when she was first branded at shore symbolizing in a way that she will never be free from slavery. How this event really relates to actual life events is that it ...
Minor characters also add plot and volume to the story and keep it alive. For example Leper’s going to the war. When Leper goes to the war, it is brought as a surprise. This is because Leper is not expected to be a war going type of guy. Leper is a quiet, non athletic guy, making him not a very ideal war person. Brinker would have been expected to be the first to enlist in the war because he is so big and athletic. This is one part of the minor characters adding plot to the story.
Katniss ideals and integrity stay true and strong that is what make her different from everyone else. She values everyone's life and she does not believe that innocent people have to die to make a point of a situation. For example, The Hunger Games she completely disagree about being socially acceptable to kill children and being broadcast as entertainment for people to have a tea party while children die. Which her actions leads to do things out of the ordinary, like try to die with Peeta instead betraying him to go back and win the games. Peeta tells her that it should be you to go home I have no one. She says, “No I need you”. Katniss tells Peeta hit her because she does not believe in killing when it is unfair and person is unarmed. In “The Hunger Games” the secondary characters are very one dimensional and usually have one purpose in the story. For example the character Gale is just there to be another love interest in the protagonist’s life. Finally, in literary short stories the antagonist is not always just a bad person. At the beginning, we don’t like the grandmother very much, but towards the end we realise that she has had many hardships in her life and she just wants things to be orderly and live the life she used to have. In conclusion literary short stories are better than popular fiction stories because literary stories are character driven, which means that the characters are more complex and interesting than popular fiction stories. This character has helped me in many situations, which as mentioned earlier, proves difficult to narrow down to one instance. When I was younger, this character told me to join Boy Scouts in first grade. At the time it just seemed like a fun thing to do, but the lessons I learned throughout the now ten or so years are invaluable to me. Scouts in fact shaped my character to be polite and kind, helpful and friendly, and self-sufficient. My character grew then to contain another pillar, leadership. This leadership made me an Eagle Scout in 2013 and led to make a decision that ultimately challenged my character and run for class president for my tenth and eleventh grade year. My character told to fight for one cause, for one source of my happiness and motivation and that was my classmates. Character allowed me to make that decision that I do not and will not ever regret, not for one
Although Eleanor Roosevelt served as first lady from 1932 to 1945, her influence lasted much longer than expected. Eleanor became her husband’s ears and eyes during her husband’s presidency and aided human rights during her entire life. She did what no other First Lady, or woman had dared to do before; she challenged society’s wrong doings. Many respected her; President Truman had called her “the First Lady of the World (Freedman, 168).” Eleanor Roosevelt was an amazing first lady who helped her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, run the country.
Katniss is a good person at heart. Katniss may have hunter’s instinct; kill anything or anyone who tries to harm the people she cares about. Katniss would risk her life for them. Even in the games, Katniss would not kill the one person who stood in her way of winning. Katniss shows what matters compassion and her humanity. Katniss shows she is more than apiece in their games (232). Katniss remembers what Peeta said on the Roof. Peeta said,” I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not” (141). Katniss does not want to lose herself, which she never does. Katniss shows she is a good person by forming alliances and taking care of other tributes. Katniss does not think she is good but she really is even if she cannot see it.
Any novel or story needs strong major characters to create a logical plot line and to keep the reader engaged in the characters’ conflicts. With that said, minor characters can have just as big of an impact on a story as major characters do; as they sometimes act as an important symbol, or add minute but essential meaning to a story line. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the minor characters, George Wilson, Meyer Wolfsheim, and Pammy Buchanan to provide insight into the life of Jay Gatsby himself.
Although typically overlooked by the inattentive reader, the minor character can serve a myriad of literary roles from adding to the overall story elements to distinguishing the character’s impact on the plot. In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, minor characters play a paramount role in advancing the plot, reinforcing Austen's tone, and uniquely contributing to the work as a whole. Surprisingly, the impact of a certain minor character upon the work is illuminated as well as expatiated when analyzed. Lady Catherine de Bourgh has a much greater impact on the plot, characters, and theme of Pride and Prejudice that her minor role would suggest. In this way, she advances the plot, emphasizes the theme of social expectations, and provides a satirical image of the aristocracy.
Rebellion is seen when the little girl from District 11 dies. Those in that district start to fight the men in uniform and start destroying things around. Also, when Katniss and Peeta attempt suicide at the end of the game they make the authorities change their mind. By this action Katniss and Peeta manage to affect the decision of the gamemakers which is the first time it has happened. Katniss can be seen as the intellectual leader who stood for what she believed in as she didn’t kill her male counterpart. The president of the Capitol hates the fact that Katniss is making changes to the game although she does this indirectly.
