Primary Sources Of Reconstruction Essay

The primary sources I selected to write about have do with the horrible years of the Reconstruction Period, how freedom for former slaves was a huge issue and debate across the whole nation, especially the south because of the views slave holders had. From these primary sources we see what former slave holders had to say about their views on the freedom of slaves, and the views of former slaves as well on freedom and the sacrifices and pain they had to go through to be where they are at today. The first primary source I chose was a report on the conditions of the south. In 1865, Carl Schurz was sent to investigate the conditions of the south after the Civil War had ended. He spoke to many people to find out what their thoughts on emancipation was and what he found was that many white people were furious at the thought of former slaves being able to have freedom and the same equal rights as them. What I found to be quite interesting about this primary source were the thoughts and comments white men had towards the slaves, they were completely against the federal government and their decisions towards slavery. Schurz mentions how white men said slaves were only useful in the sense of “hard working labor” and nothing more, therefore were meant to be in the fields working not having rights and being seen as equal. A large majority of people that Schurz came into contact with belonged to the more higher intelligent class, in which this case were against the thought of slaves becoming free. The thought of free labor was unbearable for slave holders, it bought outrage and many problems in the South. According to the white race African Americans were useful for plantations and with free labor coming into the picture they would be able t... ... middle of paper ... ...om they were still put through events and had to experience many difficulties to get to where they are today. Freedom and rights was not given to them as easily as it was for rights, it took a lot of fighting and hard work to receive what they deserved. The Southern whites put up a fight to keep slavery going and even once they lost that they continued to fight to take the rights away from African Americans. Soon the Ku Klux Klan came to be and that even made it harder for African Americans to stay alive and live a normal happy life. Through it all though they never gave up on fighting to one day be equal and to live a life where they would not have to live every hour in fear. Eventually they received just that and are now seen as equal among every race in the United States, so every fight, death, and pain they had to endure all ended up being worth it in the end.
