When Montressor and Fortunato reach the end of the catacombs, Montressor continues with his plan and walls Fortunato into the catacombs returning the previous skeleton to its rightful place. At the end of the story, Montressor feels guilty as he tells the story of what happened fifty years prior and tells Fortunato to rest in peace.

Irony is like a twist or words or the opposite of what is intended. For example: Laughing at someone that just slipped and fell, then later you find yourself slipping and falling is a form of irony. Irony is found in real life situations as well as writings. Symbolism is a technique that gives authors a better story and shows objects as more than what they are. They use techniques like this to catch the reader’s attention.

In one of Edgar Allen Poe's best-known tales of horror, "The Cask of Amontillado," he suggests that pride can be a very dangerous thing, when one is overwhelmed with it. “The Cask of Amontillado” is the story of a deranged man, Montresor, who recounts the heinous act he committed half a century ago in the catacombs of his home to an unknown listener. The reader is not sure who he tells his story to however it is to be noted Montresor confesses to his crime without a hint of remorse, he seems to be proud to have successfully gotten away with murder. Montresor’s desire for revenge is clear throughout the story however the same cannot be said for the motive. His victim, Fortunato, and the reader are unaware of Montresor’s true motive, all that is said is that Fortunato has insulted Montresor. Edgar Allen Poe’s story can be psychoanalyzed by using Sigmund Freud’s ideas and diving in to Montresor’s family and status.

Unfortunately, it seems that Montresor is denied this pure and encompassing revenge when his victim, Fortunato, during his last few minutes with Montresor, believes that his actions are a huge charade, and not the actions of a man scorned and seeking revenge. Although in burying Fortunato alive, Montresor is able to physically accomplish what he ultimately desired, he is left with an air of insatisfaction judging by his own definition of true and justified revenge. Poe shows the resentment Montresor feels towards Fortunato from the very first sentence of the story with, "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge."
