In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator Montresor, has been insulted by Fortunato and his ego fuels him to pursue revenge. He brilliantly uses Fortunato’s pride in wine connoisseurship as bait to guide him to his grave, while promising the taste of an absent cask of Amontillado. Montresor tricks Fortunato and later kills him by burying him in a reserved crypt. Because the characters are submissive to their ego, Poe enlightens a consequence of pride that leads to a man’s end. The potential of pride is prominently seen in the narrator, Montresor. His pride for his family name is so strong that he states, “When he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge” (108). In preventing a perception of weakness, Montresor plots his revenge carefully and abides by his family motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit,” meaning “No one provokes me with impunity” (110). His family believed they were exemplary and their pride was the reason for any offense to be matched. The assumption of Fortunato’s insult upon Montresor’s family name is confirmed as the reason why Montresor seeks vengeance and therefore, “crushes a serpent” (110) that violates the respect of his family name. Furthermore, the pride of his family name guides him to his moral destruction as he carries out the murder of Fortunato. Fortunato’s pride draws him into a trap that Montresor cleverly conspires for him.
Montresor uses Fortunato’s “weak point…He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine” (108). Montresor perceives Fortunato’s pride as “kryptonite,” but perceives his own pride as a strength. He preys upon Fortunato’s determination to taste an imaginary cask of amontillado, by teasing his plans to have another man Luchresi, taste the wine; Montresor says, “If anyone has a critical turn, it is he” (109). Fortunato’s pride is incapable of accepting that anyone is better at wine-tasting than himself and says, “You have been imposed upon; and as for Luchresi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado” (109), insulting both Montresor and Luchresi. Fortunato is so profoundly blinded by his pride that he fails to see the consequence of his insult to Montresor. Fortunato questions Montresor’s claim of masonry after throwing a bottle up into the air. Even though Montresor did not understand Fortunato’s gesture, Montresor assures him, “Yes, yes,” (111) that he is indeed a mason. Because Fortunato responds, “You? Impossible! A mason?” (111) in such disbelief, he insults Montresor by questioning his masonry, in which also insults Montresor’s family. Unfortunately unaware that his pride led him down a path to his death, he gets caught in Montresor’s
trap. Montresor persistently preys upon Fortunato’s pride as he leads him to his grave. He offers Fortunato many chances to turn around because of his cough and the dampness of the catacombs, but Fortunato demands, “It is nothing, let us go on” (111). Fortunato disregards his physical weakness for his determination to taste the Amontillado. Because Fortunato will not turn around due to his pride, Montresor successfully guides him into the crypt where he planned to bury him alive, telling him to, “Proceed, herein is the Amontillado. As for Luchresi---” (112). Pride consumes both men, so deeply that it inspires Montresor to commit murder without questioning his morality, and blinds Fortunato of his consequence for his insult, making Montresor’s intention of murder successful. Through the roles of Montresor and Fortunato, pride plays their love-interest, betraying one to ensure the other’s end. Both men are so consumed with pride that Fortunato is manipulated from it and Montresor has a profound lack of remorse. He tells the story and concludes it by revealing that no one has disturbed the deceased for 50 years. He remains content that Fortunato offended him, yet mysteriously says, “In pace requiescat” (113), meaning “May he rest in peace.” Poe conveys how seductive and dangerous pride can make a man susceptible to deception, when used against them carefully.
This man, Montresor is cunning and manipulative, as he'll get what he wants through trickery or deception. Montresor is sly because he notes that Fortunato is proud for being such a renowned wine connoisseur; therefore he utilizes this exploit to lure him into his trap. And so, Montresor appealed to his confidence of wine expertise by saying, “'As you're engaged I am on the way to Luchesi.' ”(133) This stirs up Fortunato's pride and makes him offer to check Montresor's amontillado instead of Luchesi, his supposed rival in wine expertise. Additionally, he plans the date of his murder on the carnival so Fortunato would be drunk as well as being inconspicuous to wear a mask and a costume so nobody would be able to identify the person that went off with Fortunato. When Fortunato arrives at the vault he makes a scene where he seems genuinely caring and toasts him, “'And I to your long life.' ”(135) The irony is that Fortunato won't have to wait long before his demise and that Montresor only said it to advert suspicion from Fortunato. He managed to trick Fortunato until the very end which proves how clever he is.
Is there really a perfect crime? This is the main point in Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado.” The story is a dark tale of a presumably insane man who suffers from, according to him, “the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could” (Poe 75). One of the major factors in telling this story is the setting. The story is set primarily in the Montresor family catacombs, which provides the dark setting, filled with human remains, and this reflects where Montresor commits his crime, where no one will expect. Furthermore, the narration also helps in telling the story. It is first person point of view, so the story is heard entirely from him. Readers will go into Montresor’s thoughts and be curious about why he wants to kill Fortunato so badly. Furthermore, the symbolism of the story is very important and many symbols in symbolizing Montresor killing Fortunato. Finally, the insane Montresor tried to pull the perfect crime but fails; he does not pull the perfect crime, he fails his goal when he realizes he is doing a bad thing.

The Cask of Amontillado, written by Edgar Allan Poe, is a chilling story about two men named Fortunato and Montresor. The story begins with a narrator voicing his anger and resentment towards a man named Fortunato for “a thousand injuries” and insults. Our narrator sees Fortunato and lures him down into his vaults, or “catacombs,” on the premise of verifying that some wine is a certain type. Fortunato was already drunk, and had a cold. Eventually, the men reach a crypt, and the narrator chains Fortunato to the wall. Not stopping there, the narrator begins to trap him in the hole by filling it with bricks. Fortunato is quiet, until the hole is nearly filled, when he screams and then tells the narrator that it was a good joke. The narrator’s name is revealed to be Montresor. Montresor calmly takes the last brick and prepares to slide it into place, but stops and listens. All he hears are the jingling of bells. Then Montresor puts in the last brick, hence sealing Fotunato’s fate. There is chilling irony woven all throughout The Cask of Amontillado. It isn’t until the end of the story that we discover the tale took place fifty years before. Montresor’s vile deed’s motivation can be largely attributed to social class, fulfilling what he considered to be “just retribution” for the unnamed insult that was given him by Fortunato.
While at the carnival, Montresor bought some of the finest Amontillado wine to use in his vengeful plan to murder Fortunato. He then meets his "friend," Fortunato. Fortunato is wearing "a tight fitting parti-striped dress and head is surmounted by the conical cap and bells" (Poe 528). By him wearing this outfit, makes it great for the narrator because he is going to make a fool out of Fortunato. Montresor is a manipulative person. He challenges Fortunato's connoisseurship on wine tasting and leads him to his family estate.
Poe's, The Cask of Amontillado is a story about fear and revenge. The story begins with Montressor's vow of revenge, foreshadowing future actions. "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult vowed revenge..." Montressor had to be sure not to raise suspicion of what he was going to do Fortunato. Montressor knew that Fortunato had a weakness that he could use towards his advantage.

Also, he did not let Fortunato to know that he intended any grudge against him “..neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will... He did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation (8-10).” One night while Fortunato was drunk, Montresor told him that he bought a barrel of wine called Amontillado “But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts (25).” He understood that Fortunato “prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine (12).” He attracted him to going to his house to check the drink by saying that he might invite Luchresi to do it, a seeming rival of Fortunato 's, instead “As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchresi. If any one has a critical turn it is he. He will tell me (37-38).” When they left, Montresor put on a mask and quickly took the way to his property. He was sure nobody could see them together on Fortunato 's last night. Moreover, Montresor completely knew Fortunato and used the knowledge versus him. He planned his deed carefully and carried it out slowly. It seems that Montresor anticipated his revenge with joy. While they traveled down the cavern, Montresor gives Fortunato many opportunities to leave. Fortunato looks weak against the niter, which is growing on the walls, and repeatedly coughs. A surface reading of that story reveals only a simple description by Montresor (the narrator) of how he kills another man who was called, ironically, Fortunato. Montresor exploits Fortunato's vanity concerning the connoiseurship of wine; specifically, Montresor pretends to want a wine cask of Amontillado verified as genuine. Montresor chooses a time when Fortunato is drunk to dupe him into going down the spiral stairs into the catacombs, which serve as a sort of family burial grounds for the race of Montresors. But rather than a mere cask of wine, Fortunato finds his death; for Montresor bricks him into a niche of the catacombs which has remained undisturbed for the fifty years since the murder was performed. In order to determine the severity of the apparent injustices, Fortunato himself must be understood. Montressor describes him as being “rich, respected, admired, [and] beloved,” as well as “a man to be … feared” (Poe 274-276). Fortunato was a flawed individual, however. His greatest imperfection was his love for wine. Fortunato’s “connoisseurship” (274) of wine resulted in his intoxicated state throughout the short story. His physical and mental capacities were impaired by his drunkenness, and as a result, he was unable to resist Montressor’s lure into the catacombs.
