For the past 200 years, feminism and women's suffrage have been a huge issue in the world that we live in today. Many women have fought against the patriarchal society so common to our world. From Mary Wollstonecraft to Susan B. Anthony, countless women have fought the oppression that men have put onto them. Women have many different outlets to choose from when fighting against this oppression, One of the most common is via writing. A creative author can script a story in which women are oppressed, but then rise up against that oppression and empower themselves. A perfect example of this is in the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, where Elizabeth, one of the main characters, fights the constraining rules put around women in the society in which Pride and Prejudice takes place. Elizabeth is the main heroine who fights oppression put onto her by the patriarchal society that she lives in. Through her vocal opinions, independent nature, and disregard for social norms Elizabeth is able to live a happy and equal life. She proves that being submissive constraints one's goals. It almost hurt Jane’s life. Thankfully Elizabeth saved her. Elizabeth throughout the novel always pursued her goals. Her goals changed throughout the novel, but at least she always stuck to them. Multiple people told Elizabeth’s choices were wrong, such as her mother saying she was stupid for denying two marriage proposals, however elizabeth made her own decisions and had a successful life in the end. This all means that any individual can escape oppression and make decisions just like Elizabeth. Whether one is male or female, black or white, big or small anyone can stand up against their oppressors and conquer life.
