CBS News went undercover to investigate price discrimination due to gender. Not only are women paying more for retail ideas such as jeans, shoes, and personal care but also for services such as dry cleaning. Do not get me wrong, women’s clothing can be more expensive than a male’s, however routine services should be a flat rate to both genders. As of now there are no laws preventing this discrimination in retail therefore women’s products are getting taxed 1.5% more than men’s. I believe that companies think women are stupid and will not recognize that we are spending more money than we should be. I find it ironic that women are getting targeted to pay more for certain items and services when they get paid less at their work place.

The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. The article, written by Tim Worstall, explains that the New York Times was very wrong, but at the same time, in his opinion, very correct. In fact, the title of the article is, “The Pink Tax is Nothing To Do With Public Policy, Women Can Solve It For Themselves” (Worstall). The title itself insinuates that women are to blame for the increased price in products, and not the target marketing drugstores are trying to pull off. Worstall also states that the tax will not go away unless women stop buying their products and switching to the male equivalent. He backs up this statement by bringing up the fact that drugstores simply change the price because they can and they will. “…Why are the stores offering this different pricing? The obvious first answer is because they can” (Worstall). He, like the New York Times, is missing the point of the movement did, and that is changing the way drugstores tax and without exploiting women to more annual spending. Women should not have to spend an extra amount of money for something as menial as a color or design. I do agree with Worstall when he says that legislation does not need to be involved, but for a reason different than him. Women have faced gender wage discrimination for decades. The gender pay gap is the difference between what a male and a female earns. It happens when a man and a woman standing next to each other doing the same job for the same number of hours get paid different salaries. On average, full-time working- women earn just “77 cents for every dollar a man earn.” When you compare a woman and a man doing the same job, “the pay gap narrows to 81 percent (81%)” (Rosin). Fifty-one years ago, in order to stop the gender gap discrimination, Congress enacted the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The act states that all women should receive “equal pay for equal work”. Unfortunately, even in 2014 the gender pay gap persists and even at the highest echelons of the corporate; therefore, the equal pay act is a failure.

Not only are they paid less than men, the prices for women’s products is significantly higher than the price of male products. Everyday products, such as shampoo, deodorant, fragrances, and other products are costlier for women. For example, the perfume Prada for women costs $81.00. Prada for men costs only $54.99. Even sunscreen, which is exactly the same for both males and females, costs about 5 dollars more for the “gender neutral” version, than the one aimed for men (Narins). The average women’s paycheck is twenty percent less than their male counterparts. Men with only high school education’s make more than some women who have graduated college. Most women are still working the traditional “female” jobs: secretaries, teachers, and nurses for example. Women are very capable of doing these jobs, but most times when applying for a “man’s job” are not taken seriously.
