Defenseless and Harmed Suffering Alone Imagine a small run world, infested with small animals. Just remember that thought, and take away the cats who like to eat the miniature creatures. Or dogs that like to scare away intruders such as a bird or squirrels. These warm mammals that we care for and cherish them, would all die and leave this world forever. Just because most people who have signed their tags as harmful or not capable of being adopted, leads to killings due to not enough captivity. So killing, abusing, violating more than just dogs and cats will do this to society and the world. Apollo, the mixed German Shepard, had soon faced life threatening consequences of being the runt of the pack. living his life till the age of one was …show more content…
easy, sleeping whenever and wherever in a satisfyingly cozy home. Yet it was time to set the puppies out for adoption. After only a few hours there was a welcoming family keeping their eye out for him, except no one knew what really happened at home. Apollo had spent the next three years living outside, barely ever getting enough food and water each long awaking day, and being abused constantly for being smaller than other known German shepherds. Tormented and devastated, he was attached by a long bulky chain, tied up to a tree, and there he spent winter nights to hot and humid days. Days he grew weaker, skinnier, and less willing to survive, a broad truck pulled towards the edge of where he was chained. Taking cautious steps, searching to find any lurkers, the calm, graceful lady opened the locked gate and made her way over. Shocked, Apollo wasn’t terrified of humans, yet he winced and stayed put while she untied the rusty chain from around his neck. Gently wrapping an immensely thick cloth around his boney, shaking body. Then taking him inside the truck on the navy blue, heated seat, with another blanket laid across the back seats. Lightly, yet just enough to lock them, she shut the doors. Before taking off was the last time he will ever see sight in the home or family again. Taken to a cut of section of the shelter was another room, tall and wide, standing there was a remarkable lady standing there in a white lab coat, having a long and continuous smile while waving, the other lady set him downward. Weeks later Apollo looked and acted like a brand new pup, just like the picture of him to the side, wagging his tail constantly and became extremely energetic, because if it wasn’t for ASPCA, animal shelter, he would've been left for the dead chained up the aging tree. This foundation saved his life by scooping him away from his owners and to brought him back to life. Giving Them Help Henry Bergy, a 54-year-old philanthropist, had come across a remarkable charity to save the lives of abused animals.
On April 10, 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(ASPCA) was founded in New York City. While being appointed by President Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, Bergh had witnessed the horrific sights of what peasant drivers had done to their work horses at the Russian Court of Czar Alexander ll. Once seeing these conditions, he visited the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in London(ASPCA). This had awakened his determination, making sure to exercise the powerful tool to arrest and/or prosecute violators of this law. Then on April 19, 1866, the first effective law in the United States was passed, allowing the ASPCA to investigate complaints of animal cruelty and to make …show more content…
arrests. Starting at the turn of the 20th century, small domestic animals, like cats and dogs, became the focus for members of ASPCA. They had written its first annual report in 1867 after a man was sentenced to 2 years in prison for beating a cat to death(American). While collecting donations, the ASPCA is not related to any local/known SPCAs, despite similar names funding’s received given to the ASPCA will not necessarily go to a donor’s local shelter; or known as a small shelter. Over a century and a half, the organization's “mindset” has stayed the same, protecting harmed animals and doing what's needed for the animals to survive. On top of defending the animals, they gather and collect from donors from watching depressing and emotional commercials with statics. As well the ASPCA collaborates with animal welfare organizations across the United States to provide immediate, measurable and sustainable change for at-risk animals in targeted communities. During a three-month challenge, called the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, shelters across the country competed in contests to break their own records from a five-year period–pulling out all the stops to save more animals' lives than the previous year. Providing even more than putting sad thoughts and images into your head, they design several jobs/volunteer opportunities for people willing to pitch in and help. Such as finding news homes for the upcoming animals, a program that professionals train approximately 1,000 spay/neuter every year. In case of emergency they have an additional 24-hour diagnostic and treatment hotline, APCC offers extensive toxicology resources, educational programs and consulting services(ASPCA). (Add Section Title) Over the years of raising money to support the abused animals, as referring to the German Shepherd, Apollo, he would have died shortly after if it was for all the support of generous people donating funds to the cause. While most of the funds go towards the food and medical supplies etc., it’s the staff and volunteers that are the ones who do the majority of the work. As showing to the circle chart, the recorded data states which animals are commonly abused. Down to the left over 78 million pet dogs are in the United States alone. Although most of them are pit bulls and mutts due to people labeling them as harmful and dangerous are lost/abandoned. Over 60% in just the breed of pit bulls are killed in shelters, and the rest is other breeds. Years of torment Years thousands of animals suffer from cruelty and neglect.
Just over half are taken to shelters, left with mental scars of being abused made forever homes seem hopeless. While others are left, abandoned on without homes, and starved. Without the ASPCA not a single animal would have a chance, searching near and far, high and low, light and dark, the ASPCA is committed. You would never think to search inside a laboratory, yet they have rescued over 100 million animals from mice to birds, escaping scientific experiments that severely injured or could kill them with chemical, drug, food, and even cosmetic testings, instead they save lives (Humane Society of Grande Valley). Dark corner alleys or underground basements hold just worse sights, harsh dog owners betting hundreds of dollars on animal fightings. While training these innocent dogs, make them into vicious, blood thirsty creatures. The ASPCA can help with this as well, sending out “undercover” volunteers to turn in the people committing illegal crimes and saving the harmed dogs. Helping these animals is their one mission, most people believe this never happens. Yet we need them as much as they need
us.
Four journalists named Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser, and Fred Myers thought it would be a good idea to create a nonprofit organization to help animals that have are treated cruelly by either abuse or when they are left alone. The Humane Society has been helping animals since November 24, 1954(2). Their mission since the beginning has been celebrating animals and confronting cruelty. There are a great number of things that the Humane Society has been doing for the animals, like saving them from people who want to harm them. The list of animals that the Humane Society helps is very long, because they don’t just help the household pets that you might have thought. The conditions of the Humane Society change due to the types of animals
Founded in 1866, by: Henry Bergh, the ASPCA is the first humane society in America, and one of the largest in the world. Henry's philosophy is that all animals deserve respect by all humans, and must be protected by law (Henry Bergh). In the early years dogs were used to pull carts and work treadmills simply because men couldn't afford horses, but thanks to Henry's diligent efforts, he helped get a law passed prohibiting dogs to work in such environments. The first animal hospital opened in 1912, starting the course for others to follow. Since the ASPCA is privately funded, and a not for profit organization, their supporters reach well over 2 million people. That is very impressive! There are three key factors that keep the ASPCA thriving. They are: the protection for pet parents and pets,
The RSPCA's American counterpart, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), was founded in New York City in 1866 by Henry Bergh, who was concerned about cruelty to horses, stray cats, and dogs. The ASPCA notes that in 1952, it initiated "voluntary inspection of laboratories in New York that use animals for research," an important function that is performed today by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care
Ascione’s (1993) definition of animal cruelty is defined as “socially unacceptable behavior that intentionally causes unnecessary pain, suffering, or distress to and/or death of an animal” exclusive of socially condoned behavior, such as legal hunting and certain agricultural and veterinary practices. Not all violent individuals have been previously cruel to animals but studies have shown that a great number of them have exhibited this behavior. A great majority of the literature calls for a better understandin...
The evidence that pets are not considered very important in the United States is easy to find – as Bernard E. Rollin and Michael D.H. Rollin state: “we acquire these animals while knowing nothing of their needs and natures, then get rid of them because they cannot help those needs and natures…we adopt them on a whim, and get rid of them when it passes…” (Rollin & Rollin “Ethics and Companion Animals” 546). Overpopulation of companion animals like dogs and cats presents perhaps the most clearly visible dilemma – “although no completely reliable statistics exist, it is estimated that between 6 and 10 million dogs and between 7 and 10 million cats were humanely killed in pet shelters in the United States in 1990” (Palmer “Killing ...
Countless lives locked away in cages and forgotten about have overwhelmed our society, it has left blood stains on our history as a species and if history has taught us anything, it’s that we have a choice to change our ways of adjusting to situations. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. The 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered, while 78 percent of dogs and 88 percent of cats are not spayed or neutered, in 2009 Statistics from animal shelters in 55 counties in WV (West Virginia) shows that nearly 54% of all animals entering shelters are euthanized, The euthanasia rates ranged from the lowest at 5% to the highe...
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
The dangerous dog's act is very controversial. The RSPCA have argued that this act is not fit for purpose and have been asked for the act to be revised. ITV (2016) explains ‘In the past two years the RSPCA said it had been "forced" to put down 366 dogs under section one of the Act, which covers breed-specific offences’. The act states that if the dog is ‘dangerously out of control’ (GOV), no matter what the location, or if the dog is it injure someone or an assistance dog, the owner or whoever is in charge of the dog at the time will be committing an offence (this applies to England and Wales). The act prohibits certain dogs off their breeds and physical characteristics.
Have you ever wondered, how it feels to be in a place where is overcrowded, and you are next in line to be euthanize? This is the life of the shelter animal when no one adopts them for a certain period of time. According to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or known as ASPCA, each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized, which are 1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats. I am sure; most of you have some point in your life, owned a dog or a cat. Whether you are an animal lover or not, you don’t want to see innocent animals losing their lives. I personally have adopted a dog from a local shelter. There is no doubt that pet adoption from a shelter is a satisfying decision that will save innocent
Anyone, who visits an animal shelter, as I do, sees an extraordinary number of beautiful, affectionate, and desperate dogs and cats. The majority of animals in any particular shelter are dogs, usually adults, for whom there aren't enough adoptive homes waiting. A few may have come from responsible breeders, whose owners do not realize that the breeder will take them back, many are those who are lost, and/or from owners who simply got tired of them. Some are pet shop puppies from a puppy mill that did not meet the owner's expectations due to health, temperament, or other reasons. A large number usually turn out to be the result of deliberate and irresponsible home breeding. These people are known as "back-yard breeders." And that is not a compliment.
Humane societies are groups that aim to stop human or animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons. Animal control agencies are services provided by the government. The officers may work with police or sheriff offices, parks and recreational departments, and health departments by confining animals or investigating animal bites to humans. Animals held may be returned to their owners, released to the wild, or be adopted; and also be put down after so often. Humane societies, or also known as ASPCA ( American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was first founded in the USA in New York, 1866 by Henry Bergh. Here, animals are taken in and are able to be adopted by the public and are well cared for in these facilities. Often times they are well-known for their "No kill" policy, unless the animal is unable to be adopted due to untreatable healthcare
Doesn’t it kill you to see a movie and see an animal get killed or just hurt in it? Good thing that’s all special effects. Back in the day, around 1966, movies didn’t always use special effects. Khartoum, a movie based on a holy war in the Sudan desert, directed by Basil Dearden and Eliot Elisofon, used horses a great deal, but did not use the special effects in order to not hurt the animals. Many horses died in the making of this movie, as well as others, even including a major hit, Ben-Hur. Today, there are many activist groups that fight for and about the unfair treatment and protection for animals in everyday life. The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one of these groups. PETA was founded in 1980, and since then has been working on getting the point across to the public that animals “are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.” (PETA: Official Page). PETA also focuses on educating policymakers and the public about the abuse of animals and making it known that animals deserve the right to be treated with respect.
Animal welfare is a fairly recent, yet troubling argument in society. This subject is a strong argument on a variety of opinions. Animal welfare has become a major issue and has grown internationally. The human concern and the safety and rights of animals is the meaning of the concept of animal welfare. Through decades of animal welfare, people fight to prevent the action of animal cruelty and bring help towards animal rights.
Every year, the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) takes in close to 50,000 reports of animal mistreatment in Australia and about 150,000 in England and in Wales (RSPCA, 2013). However, these figures do not include the cases when mistreatment is not reported which, according to the RSPCA, happens almost as often as the ones recorded (RSPCA, 2013). Maltreatment occurs when an animal is tormented or harmed, imprisoned or transported from one place to another in a manner that risks their well-being and health. Killing them in a non-humane way, not providing them with the correct food, not taking care of them or the illness and injuries they may have, and not providing them with proper shelter or adequate living circumstances are also forms of cruelty. In 2013 the RSPCA investigated 4,000 more cases in Australia than in the previous year; statistics also show that in the United Kingdom, on average, every thirty seconds someone dials the Organization’s 24-hour cruelty line seeking for help (RSPCA, 2013). This indicates that animal mistreatment is a growing issue that has effects not only on the victims, but also on the perpetrator, the people involved in rescuing and saving the animals’ life, and every other individual that gets touched by their stories. Thus, considering that abusing animals is against our moral and ethical obligation of protecting our planet and the forms of life in it, including animal life, it is an issue that is happening considerably often. However, thankfully for the animals, there are also organizations and laws opposing and fighting against animal cruelty to save the victims and to put an end to it. Global organizations such as the RSPCA, ALDF, PETA, WSPA, among other...
Many people who abuse animals do not realize that they are actually hurting animals, this is known as unintentional. When some people try to discipline their pets they use tactics that they think is acceptable, when in reality is probably not the best way. People also abuse animals due to lack of attention, such as forgetting to feed and water the animals for a number of days. A family may take the animals with them when they leave the house, and forget to leave a window down with the animal inside. One of the biggest unintentional ways of animal cruelty is a way that many people think is helpful but is actually has a negative impact on all of the animals involved, this idea is trying to take in more animals than one can handle, they have good intentions but this is harmful to animals because it forces them to live in unhealthy conditions. There are many new cases of animal hoarding every year, with over 250,000 animals falling victim. Puppy mills are large dog breeding’s that care more about making money than the wellbeing and health of the animals. Many dogs become ill with diseases such as kidney or heart disease as a result of the conditions in which they live.
