Seven Steps for Writing an Academic Essay
Abstract: Many students do not understand that there is a process to writing. This lesson provides students with seven steps for writing an academic essay at the first-year university level. It can be easily modified for grade 11-12 students.
1. pick a topic
* often a teacher will assign you a topic, but if you have a choice, pick something that you are personally interested in.
2. brainstorm (or research)
* benefits of brainstorming: it will indicate if you have enough information to write a full paper & it will generate new ideas for you
* ask yourself, "what are the connections between these ideas?"

o discuss the effects of global warming
o should animals be used for cosmetic testing

a. web brainstorming
b. compare/contrast brainstorming
c. Burke's brainstorming target

d. clustering - jot down only words or very short phrases. Use different colored pens as ideas seem to suggest themselves in groups. Use printing or longhand script to suggest that ideas are main thoughts or supportive ideas. Don't bother to organize too neatly, though, because that can impede the flow of ideas. Don't cross anything out because you can't tell where an idea will lead you. When you get a few ideas written down, you can start to group them, using colored circles or whatever. Draw linking lines as connections suggest themselves
3. develop a thesis statement/sentence
* a university level academic essay usually requires you to take a position in an arguement and then support your position. Arguement doesn't mean you are fighting. It means that you are trying to convince your readers of an idea or persuade them to act.
* you will want to pick something that reasonable people will disagree over and that you are interested in.
When I first encountered the word argument in this chapter I thought that I would be informed on what an argument is and how to construct an argument in an essay. After reading the chapter I think arguments much more than creating diversity over a topic. Also, it is much more than making a claim. There are many different styles and ways to present an argument.
During my first semester at the University of Alabama I wrote several essay including a response essay, a rhetorical essay, and annotated bibliography and a research essay. Although these assignments each had different objectives, they were all written to work towards reaching the Student Learning Objectives for English 103 that were provided at the beginning of the semester. Based upon the reading, I think a major aim of “academic argument” genre is to present an idea, an issue, or a debatable point of view. After that, with logos, ethos and pathos, the author will either try to convince the readers to accept his or her argument, or challenge them to think and consider it.
It is difficult to get my mind to focus on one idea, which makes it difficult to start a paper. Outlines are a great method for organizing thoughts, but outlines take time, and I have found that outlines do not necessarily help with all types of writing. Between American Studies and Honors Writing, I have written two research papers, for which I was required to compose outlines. The outlines undoubtedly helped the writing process operate smoothly, but I struggle to believe that an outline would have helped me write any other type of paper. In “Literacy, Identity, Imagination, and Flight,” Gilyard shares his approach to education and learning by stating, “A lot of my initial observations are the old ‘go for what you know’ variety that are important back in the ‘hood” (Gilyard 42). I interpreted this a few different ways. The interpretation that resonated with me most was that I can adopt other methods of organization, but sometimes what I am used to is best. This is especially true when I do not have a great deal of time to write a paper. On the other hand, while I agree with going for what I know, I need to begin stepping out of my comfort zone. My chosen topic is minimum wages increasing in the United States. This topic came from the idea from the news. It was brought up in the discussion. This topic was interesting because I work at a retail store in New Jersey. The wages in New Jersey are seven dollars and twenty five cents. In 2014 it will be a dollar up so it is going to be tough because prices will rise. This topic affects me because now I worked as a minimum wage worker so I get pay by an hour. If the wages rise then something will decrease and increase.

Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
As you might have guessed from these passages, the essay may take many forms. Most of the essays you will write during your college career, however, will be what are known as persuasive (or argumentative) essays.
My ISP topic is agriculture because I like science and I find farming and ranching interesting. I also wanted to find the many interesting uses of our food such as corn wheat and sometimes its not even food. Cotton and other foods can be used for clothes and some everyday needs I wanted to find out more. I don’t really know that much stuff i just know names of food and crops.
